Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

I past on the x360 and ps3 launch.

But getting a PS4 day one. Really just amazing line up with just BF4 for me. that crazy it a launch game... I built a PC just to play BF2.

Reasons to get ps4 at launch: the ps4 is great value for the money, reception is great, it's exciting getting new tech.

but if it wasn't for killzone I prob would hold off. this game has the potential to be my go to shooter for years and i want to be there day one.

I won't get be getting one until next summer. By then, the situation about upcoming games will be much clear along with any hardware/software issue.

Day one, whether I buy it at launch or a year from now, doesn't matter much as I can't see the price dropping that soon.

I'am so sick of this gen i want to move on to next gen as fast as possible so, il be grabbing the PS4 day one and the Xbox One some time later.

Got a beast gaming PC and still have two PS4s reserved.

No fucks given. Tired of looking at these 8 year old consoles in my living room.

I have a solid PC and I keep looking over at the PS3 and WII U I never touch and think I should cancel my pre order....but damn I really do want a PS4 for no real reason I can make sense of.

IMO the value proposition is highest on launch day if you plan on buying a console before the first price drop (typically 2 years unless shit goes wrong).

You can spend $399 in November '13 and use it sparingly... but still use it. Or you can spend $399 in Septermber '14 and still have paid the same price but not owned it for almost a year. If you have the money I don't get the logic in waiting.

I think it might be best to wait until next E3. That way, you can observe the quality of the launch exclusives and cross-gen ports, then wait for E3 to see what's really in store for these consoles for Fall 2014 and beyond. That's obviously when the real big exclusives start coming out, something that occurred with Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.

I'm with you OP, my enthusiasm went down hard this last couple of weeks. The down time between e3 and launch has given me some time to reconsider my purchase, and I've come to a conclusion to pass up on any consoles this fall. It's probably just going to collect dust for me personally as I really don't have any interest in the launch games. I'm most likely just going to get it around spring when Infamous drops. Any announcements from Gamescom or TGS (most likely) won't affect the launch lineup in any significant way.

Pretty much this. Either wait two years till the price drop or just get it at launch, get all those awesome indie games, PS4 exclusives, better versions of multiplatform games etc.

For me Killzone is a must, and DriveClub could be great. But Watchdogs, Infamous, Witcher 3, Destiny etc are games I'm set on. And they're all most likely coming in the first half of 2014. Indie games wise, Witness, Hookum, Galak-Z, Transistor and Outlast look killer.

I agree that the price drop is not likely happening until 2 years down the line. Waiting a year and buying one will mean you can pick up the launch games for much cheaper, no?

Correct, but no one is saying you need to buy all of the games now. Personally I'm thrilled with the PS4 launch, but if there are only a handful of titles that you really must play *now* like say Killzone and some of the indies... get it now and play those now. The next tier of games you want but not at full price... wait on. Not to mention that there will be free games with PS+.

I'm not getting one. I'm not against the idea of getting one, but the games announced dont yet appeal to me just yet. Some may laugh, but for now I'm content with my Wii u and backlog.

I may be tempted down the line by output from platinum, q games, treasure and a new wipeout but time will tell. Also waiting to see how online functions fare in Australia with our lackluster infrastructure at this time.

Given that DriveClub, Outlast, Secret Ponchos and Don't Starve are already on the roster, pretty sure you're wrong about that. That's more than the value of the subscription right there straight away, and that's just to start things off. Who knows what the other months will bring, but there are literally hundreds of indie games being made for the PS4 right now, so there'll be plenty to add to the PS+ catalogue. I'd imagine many devs will actively want to get there games on as part of the PS+ roster so they're at least guaranteed some time ofunding from the downloads instead of getting lost in the sea of releases.

I don't know why people are so quick to underestimate PS+ when all evidence points to the contrary. Sony won't want to lose the good will it's garnered with PS+ among it's consumer base. It's one of the best deals in gaming right now, and a massive draw to the Sony platform. Sony would be stupid to let all that good will and consumer value proposition incentive slip away.

I think Sony needs to move away from handing out the big selling titles on playstation plus and move toward critically acclaimed games that sold poorly like they did with Vanquish. Granted it may essentially become welfare for talented devs who can't sell their games but that may be needed this upcoming gen. The market will be brutal.

That's pretty much where I'm at. Play Killzone and the freebies and work on my PS3 and 3DS backlogs while waiting on price drops on others and things like Infamous to launch.

For those concerned about their PlayStation 4 being defected, you could always buy an extra one or two year warranty along with it. I'm probably going to preorder one on Amazon.

Wait until TGS until you second guess yourself. It will still not be out by then plus you get to see what Europe and Japan have to offer. (I say Europe because Gamescom is this month anyways. Tokyo Game Show being in September.)

I haven't even preordered the PS4 yet.

For me it depends on what Sony announces at Gamescom and TGS.

I'm not keen on what is currently announced though. The only exclusive game I'm remotely interested in is Killzone, but that's not enough to make me go out and spend $550AUD on unfortunately.

Hi Gaffers,

My first post on Gaf, but I've been loitering around since early this year and I'm glad to be able to finally write something!

So yeah, on topic. I'm still unwavering on my choice with getting a PS4 day one. For a few different reasons. Although having read quite a few of the other comments in this thread, I can understand why these points won't apply.

1. I don't own a good gaming PC.
2. Reliability is not a concern for me just based on my personal experience with Sony hardware. My launch day PS3 lasted me almost 5 years before YLOD.
3. For me, the launch line up is very solid albeit most of the games I want are third-party: Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, AC4, Driveclub, and Killzone. This is not including the digital specific content. Already that is quite a few games.
4. I'm up-to-date with my backlog. Although there are quite a few big game releases coming up such as GTAV and Dark Souls 2 but these will fill the void to release and I plan on keeping my PS3 for the mean time.
5. A part of me still expects one of the announcements at Gamescom will be certain current gen games being released on next gen consoles. Maybe it is more wishful thinking.
6. It's new hardware and this generation as been long. I enjoy the excitement.
7. I won't experience a lack of games, since summer has always had a lack of new releases but I normally use that as catch up time.
8. And lastly, the price/demand. It's good value for money. I feel that demand will be high and that they may be a little hard to get hold of so I'd rather have mine as soon as possible for that reason as well. For instance, for early next year when InFamous is out.

The only thing I have doubts over is the full XB1 story and whether it is better in the long run to just start saving for a good rig. I've always leaned more towards the PS ecosystem, but I'm still always open to the idea of being won over but nothing as of yet has fully convinced me to change my ways.
