Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

I had an opportunity to pre-order one. I was on the website with ~20 still available for pre-order one. And oh god yes, I want one. I know I want one. But my backlog was too huge for me to click the pre-order button.

As I've said before I love Battlefield, current gen consoles do not do that game any justice. At least with a ps4/x1 you get really close to the pc version. Same goes for COD, it may run at 60fps but it looks like utter shit. Battlefield alone is enough reason for me to jump.

I had one preordered just in case a family member or friend who was not fortunate enough to get one at launch could get one. I think I will cancel that pre order though seeing as the parties involved see the ps4 as under powered and are looking forward to the steam box.

Heh, I was such a Nintendo fanboy back then, I hated those PS commercials........but now I'm excited for PS4........

I just rebuilt a 3770K/GTX 680 rig. I have a giiiiiiiiiiigantic Steam backlog. I'm not really interested in any next-gen exclusives (Watch Dogs is on PC, aw yiss)

...I still have a PS4 preordered.

It's at Amazon, so I have until a few days before to dump it, but I'm holding onto it just in case someone I know ends up wanting one, or I end up becoming weak and hopping on the bandwagon.

But I know Watch Dogs will end up dirt cheap in a Steam Summer Sale and I'll end up playing it then.

I bought a Gamecube at launch for Rogue Leader, it was awesome

I'm an Assassins Creed fan, Watch Dogs looks cool and Battlefield should deliver lots of online fun so this launch lineup is pretty appealing for me.,............and the 226 dollars in gift cards I have........and getting those 3 games for 40 bucks each :)

I could have gotten a PS4 and Xbox One from work (with my tasty 20% discount too) but i'm going to leave it for a while, let them iron out the kinks and wait for more games to come out. I also have games i want to play on the PS3 and 360 first too, i really am in no rush for a new console at the moment.

I rushed into getting the PS3 and 360 and ended up only playing a handful of games for the first year.

I have a pre-order but I'm undecided on whether to keep it. The launch selection isn't great, but then again the price isn't likely to drop any time soon so I don't exactly gain much by waiting. I think it's going to depend on what other games I'm playing at the time.

If you're on the fence and you have a preorder, hold onto it until after Gamescom/TGS to see what other games are in the pipeline. That may reignite your excitement. If not, cancel and get one later. Nothing wrong with waiting.

I was a fence sitter for awhile but now I'm doubling down. In fact, I've got my console and some games paid off already. I've never been much of a first party Sony fan at all but I'm okay with Sony's first year plan. I think they would be fools to end this console gen in 5 years but I get the sense they plan on moving to another console by then.

If I get an Xbox one, it will be after a price drop. Since I got to get one or the other sometime, I figure that I may as well get one now.

I have never actually bought a console at launch, so I was considering jumping in on the PS4 day 1, just because it's kinda something I always wanted to do. But thinking about it there's no consoles out there other than maybe the Gamecube that I really wanted at launch, and PS4's launch lineup is...well, stuff I wouldn't even touch if I got it for free.

I am a *little* interested in the changes to the formula that have gone into the new Killzone game, it sounds Crysis-like. And while it's not gonna be there at launch, I think it'd be fun to play Planetside 2 again to terrorize new players with my Magrider. But playing that with a controller would be irritating even just sitting in a vehicle all the time.

Don't get me wrong it's highly likely that I'll get the system eventually, but I simply can't think of anything early in the system's life that I want which isn't on PC. MGS5 will likely be the breaking point if a PC version does not happen, but as soon as Capcom starts with the next-gen fighting games I'll have to be there.

Whilst I tend to agree, I find it really odd that ND (dev of the generation IMHO) don't have a launch title - even if it's the SP DLC for LoU.

Also MM - they showed something that could be nearer ready than folk think.

Sony have done a great job this release. The reveal (8GB GDDR5 reveal), then E3 (£350/$400 reveal), then you have Gamescon and finally TGS...why not have big reveals at each?

Their first title is always a year after launch, look forward to next holiday season

I already have a gaming PC but still have a PS4 on order.

I did toy around with the idea of cancelling it but I think I'm going to stick.

I've always been a fan of PlayStation products and regardless of what other consoles or systems I've owned, the PS1, PS2, PS3 - and to a lesser extent the PSP and Vita at the various times I've owned them - have always provided me with experiences that I want to play. The vast majority of the third party stuff from this and future years I will be playing on PC, but as an investment into the next 8 years of Sony first party (and those rogue third party) exclusives, I think £349 is a really nice price to jump in with Day One.

i hope nba2k14 and fifa 14 reflects the fact they're next gen..if they are, those are getting picked up for sure.

still debating whether or not i'm gonna get bf4 for ps4 or pc

I love getting consoles day one. I'll be picking up my Xbox One with Battlefield 4, Watch_Dogs and Ryse. Yup, I'm getting it!!!

I'm getting an extended warranty from Microsoft to cover my ass.

As a rule of thumb, I go by: Never buy launch anything. You're going to get a better machine later, at a better price, that will have better supply, and a larger software library.

Really? My launch 60GB PS3 is still kicking ass and playing PS2 and PS1 games like a champ.

I'll be getting a PS4 on launch mainly for Watchdogs, I don't really enjoy PC gaming outside of an MMO and the PS4 edition will be far superior to the PS3 edition and will have bonus content compared to the Xbox/Wii versions, I don't really need a PS4 until probably Infamous: Second Son, but the price of the PS4 will be the same, Infamous and probably other Q1 2014 and Q2 2014 games will be out before the first price drop.

I don't really see the point in buying a next gen console after launch and before the first price drop, which will probably Gamescom/TGS 2014

Never had a problem with the consoles i buy at launch being faulty either, still got a PS1/2/3 Launch editions chugging along nicely

All these next gen systems have convinced me to do is buy a capable PC.

There's a problem when 95% of titles that come out on consoles will also be on PC.

Not as simple as it sounds
It's very simple. There are far more great games available now than I could hope to complete in the next year and a half. And that's disregarding the full slate of new games still coming for current gen consoles. Besides, the launch titles for the new consoles will be few in number and play it safe in terms of design and tech.

It also makes waiting much easier when you have a new gaming PC. ;)

. The better games always come out in the following holiday season. Everyone should know this by now.
Exactly. Only a few inside dev studios were able to get started early on next gen titles. Everyone else just got underway over the last six months. We won't start to see the fruit of their labor until holiday 2014 or early 2015. That's when the truly exceptional stuff starts to hit. And by then, the consoles' quirks have emerged, prices come down, and deals start happening.

Absolutely no reason to buy a console at launch other than to stand in line overnight to tell your friends "I got one."

although i never preordered it was a sure fire thing earlier this year. but now with games pouring in on the PC from all over the place i just can't see $400 + $50 a year in value for it. that is a lot of money i could actually be spending on games and i'm having a hard enough time as it is justifying spending what i already am. i just can't see myself picking up another console until it proves to be a greater value over my PC.

The thing is we say this but the hype gets to you. A big reason for me not getting one is cause I'm going Uni. If I wasn't and had the cash, I would be there day one.

People expect a price drop from 399 in a year?
"Pricing" is no longer about just the hardware purchase anymore. There are subscriptions, services, online features, etc. that all cost money on top of the hardware. So, yeah, things could look very different in terms of total cost by late 2014.

No way that's happening.

Agree.

Okay, I just don't expect a price that's already perceived as reasonable, or PS+ to drop anything that quickly.

Sure, the hype gets to me. I'm excited. But I also have at least some self control. I've been at this for a long time (console gaming since the '70s). Things will look very different to you when you reach my age, junior. ;)

It happens to us all...

I felt the exact same way, which is why I cancelled my pre-order. I had it fully paid off, but then realized there isn't a single game I want for it. Wii U, 3DS, PS3, and Vita will keep me entertained for at least the remainder of the year.

I don't think I'll need a PS4 till at least MGS V.

Define "very different", because that's wishful thinking at best.

If we are talking about $450 as the total from console and a year of PS+, I think we can all agree that the best you'll be looking at a year later is a giftcard with purchase. I'm not saying that isn't worth it for some people, but that's far from very different.

Over many years of gaming and many console launches, I've learned one simple rule:

Always wait a year.
Without extrapolation your rule contains no merit.

Edit: I'm dumb. Scrolled too fast and missed your other posts. I still disagree. People can buy it whenever they feel it will provide value for them. You don't need to have been gaming since the 70s to figure that everyone is different and places value differently ;)

I have a gaming PC. It will run pretty much every multiplatform game better.

I see no point in buying a PS4 until the big games drop. Metal Gear Solid V, Destiny, Final Fantasy XV and maybe The Order 1886. None of that is out in the first 6 months, and possibly not even the first year, so as the flowchart suggests, I shouldn't buy one. In terms of launch lineup: Killzone looks duller the more I see of it, Knack looks terrible at every showing, and DriveClub is 30fps and just not interesting coming after MotorStorm. I also couldn't care less about the Infamous series.

A lot of my most wanted PS4/next-gen games aren't even exclusive either, and the funny thing is that right now the Xbox One actually has the way better looking exclusives in its first year to make that a sweeter overall proposition. It's likely that Forza 5 > DriveClub, Halo 5 > Killzone, and Sunset Overdrive, Killer Instinct and Dead Rising 3 are a potent exclusive combo to counter much of what PS4 has. Plus there's D4 (Swery yesyesyes) and Quantum Break could be okay. Titanfall can be bought on PC.

But then you are right back to the issues of Xbox One being an overpriced behemoth with inferior tech and Microsoft at the wheel, a company with demonstrable pure evil intent who only back-peddle when there is dissent in the fanbase.

I can sense that this gen will be no different from every other. Typical teething pains in the first two years, then it gets okay, then it gets insane, then another gen hits and we rinse and repeat.

PS4 is a steal at $399, so I don't think it'll get a price cut until 2015 holiday at the earliest. If you plan to pick one up at some point you might as well do it this holiday, I can see why the launch line up isn't inspiring you though, it's bland. Hopefully they have some tricks up their sleeve come gamescom.

I've pre order Xbox One which I'm pretty sure IS going to get a price cut in 12 months, but the games out in the first year are too enticing, so kinda the opposite problem to the PS4.
