Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

Define "very different", because that's wishful thinking at best.

If we are talking about $450 as the total from console and a year of PS+, I think we can all agree that the best you'll be looking at a year later is a giftcard with purchase. I'm not saying that isn't worth it for some people, but that's far from very different.
That's just it, though. Considering all the features and services that got added to the consoles this generation, there's absolutely no way to predict what will get added (and what pricing models will follow). All the more reason to wait.

Lol, you have to be incredibly naive to think the pricing will change "very much" in a year. Your example as to why doesn't make sense either. Microsoft is the one doing the 180'ing, not Sony, who seem to have a much clearer strategy going forward.

I highly doubt the price changes at all in a year beyond a game or PS+ being bundled in for a year. In other words, if it's the price you're waiting to drop, you'll be waiting longer than a year lol.

I'm leaning towards canceling my preorder. There are no games coming out within a year of launch that actually interest me. My 3 year old PC still runs games very well, so the multiplats games for PS4 are not appealing at all. Compared to last gen launch where there seemed to be few PC ports and more console exclusives, this launch seems a bit lackluster.

Waiting is the best plan if the launch window games don't interest you. Next year's black friday sale will probably include an amazing deal as MS and Sony compete for customers.

There won't be a price drop within a year, but I'm sure Black Friday 2014 will include some amazing bundle prices. Waiting a year for a great bundle deal sounds like a good idea.

I'll most likely cancel my pre-order now that the E3 hype has settled.

Fully intend on that being my main next-gen system, but there is nothing really at launch I'm interested in, other than maybe some of the PSN/Indie titles that look interesting. Not really worth it. Will probably do some minor upgrades to my PC and wait for big titles like FFXV or KHIII before taking the plunge. There is also the fact that PS3 is rocking with fall titles and there are a ton of cheap games for it I've passed on.

We only know 5 out of 20 WWS projects that will be hitting in the first year, and it's very unlikely any of them will be on PC. It's probably not a good idea to make a judgement already, your probably best off keeping your pre order up until after TGS then making your decision.

Yep, I'm still keeping my preorder for now, but I'm leaning towards canceling. I'll cancel at the last moment if nothing of interest gets announced. There's no reason to cancel my preorder right now when it costs me nothing until it actually ships.

I'm kinda divided personally, for one it's reasonably priced and it seems like an appealing console, on the other, I could save some money by waiting and I'm sick and tired of having crappy consoles that are not properly tested and that die of premature death.

I had three PS2s, the first two ended up getting disk read errors, my PS3 just died (had bought the MGS4 bundle in 2008)... So i'm actually kinda scared to buy yet another Sony product. Oh and my Sony Phone is half broken too...

I cant wait. Day one is always awesome, the games have always sucked in retrospect, but they've also always wowed me in the moment.

and it forms the baseline for my next computer. Invest in PS4 now, PC 2 years, not the other way. Get both exclusive worlds.

I´m thinking about cancelling my PS4 preorder too. So far the launch lineup isn`t for me (hell i`m most excited for AC 4, that should tell you everything) and i`m not satisfied with the graphical jump shown so far - i expected more from both consoles.

On top of that i just want to wait and see if the PS4 in fact gets the best multiplat versions, or not (very important for me). That was a no brainer for me till the news that Sony has big plans for the OS too and is reserving some significant system power for that.

I think i will play it safe and wait to monitor the first next gen ps4 and xbox releases to make the right decision for me.

My girlfriend is buying me one on my bday which is around launch (nov) so I'm good. The only question is whether I keep or cancel my X1 preorder... Only want Ryse...

while i totally get people wanting to move past our elongated gen:

Thinking about cancelling my pre-order since the launch lineup seems pretty lame so far and all the multi-platform titles can be played on PC as well; I would get one when a heavy hitter alá MGSV releases

this & OP kinda ring true for me, ive still got my preorder but im debating...might need the $ for other things, and im gonna give it till about gamescon or whatever to see if there's something at launch i really wanna have. i like new hardware but the drought is always harsh, and for PS3 that first year was one of the worst ive been through.

if I do cancel (doubt it'd be worth it to scalp) i know i'll get one likely not too long into 2014, likely at the same price too.

If you are really going to "get one anyway" why wait? For a slight price drop to happen 1 to 2 years down the line? Its more interesting to see the console go through its birth pangs anyway. Seeing the PS3 from dust till dawn has been an interesting ride. Doing the same for the PS4 will be great as well. Day one

Waiting might bite you in the ass. You will be missing free ps plus games every month. I wonder if you have a ps3 maybe you can reserve the ps4 games online so that might be a workaround.

I personally can't wait for a very fast OS, download and play, all the awesome features, better controller and next gen games. The only bad thing is no ultra sf 4 and some ps3 games but its time to move on anyways. Japan still hasn't really announced their games yet. I'm sure there will be a lot early 2014. Can't wait

I can't wait to get the PS4. There's something really cool about having the latest thing hooked up to the TV over the Christmas holidays and having the whole family getting involved whether they play the games or not.

It doesn't happen but once every few years, so it seems really special. So no way I miss out on that this year in hopes that there'll be a $50 price cut or whatever in a year.

Though I'll probably be playing more PS3 games after the PS4 releases this is just something I gotta have on launch day.

I know I'll end up owning a PS4, but I don't think I will own one until a game I'm dying to play comes out... so probably 2016-2017.
I don't know how anyone can wait that long for a next gen console, especially after this extremely long generation. More power to those who don't need the latest and greatest. I was ready for the PS4 two years ago.

I am on the fence.

I certainly can buy it - however I am afraid that it will just be gathering dust.
None of the launch exclusives interest me.
Multiplatform games I usually buy on Steam.
No JRPGs.

Honestly, the only two games that interest me are Strider and Transistor (shut up) and both will be available on Steam.

I can't create new thread so I'll put this here.

PlayStation 4 seems to be kinda sold out in Micromania for the day one. With 444 shops on the territory, you can call them the french GameStop (it is litteraly owned by GameStop).

So what they say is, from August 5th, they cannot promise anymore to deliver a PS4 day one. They still promise to deliver it before Christmas this year, though. But anyone who reserve a PS4 from August 5th is now on a waiting list. There is no such alert for the Xbox One.

This is why Gamescon and TGS is so important to some gamers. They can plan ahead and either sell off their backlogs or actually play them. While I'm content (not elated but content) and paying off preordered games with funds acquired by ebaying some of my collection (which was inevitable regardless of a console launch) , others aren't satisfied. I said during E3 that both sides had a very narrow focus and months later some of the buzz is wearing off because of that.

It is undeniable as far as the PS4 is concerned and I am sure Sony has to know that. Microsoft is going to be strong on the software front and their errors may not keep their formers fans way for very long. No doubt it has done some damage but I don't think it will sting as deeply as we sometimes think. I've been on gaming message boards for close to 15 years now and things don't always go as message board gamers predict.

Honestly I think people are overvaluing PS Plus on PS4 during the first year. The first year will definitely suck. There's not enough of a library to give away good games. You might get some indie games and a discount on higher profile games, but I don't see them doing much with it until the system has been out a year and there are more games.

Nope, I'm actually having third thoughts about getting a launch PS4. Gamescon and TGS should be pretty entertaining this year.

The people who still have a launch day console in this day and age are rare. Waiting at least gives you an idea of the failure rates of launch consoles even if the price doesn't go down.

Why would you need to care about that? We have one year warranties for a reason. I get that Microsoft screwed the pooch with RRoD, but I can't see that being repeated.

Warranties exist for a reason. It's consumer protection so we don't have to worry about such issues.

I'd doubt the account would be tied to the system like that. It's not like this is a Wii U or anything. At least you can stock up on free PS+ games now and get them all for free when you decide to buy.

I have a launch console, then an elite, then an Xbox S.

The first two were fine (traded them in) but after 2 years the suppose superior slim conked out on me.

I'll just take my chances when it comes to defects.

I'll likely cancel mine as well. It looks like a great console, but I want to be excited about buying it, and the games on offer aren't getting me too pumped right now. I'll probably just pick it up sometime next year.

i had enough with this gen, right now i feel that i'm burned out with ps3 and 360.day one on ps4, xbox one is not being launched in my country during 2013 so i don't even have an option to buy it.

thanks for the info, i guess, but this has nothing to do with the OP or with this thread.

Im definitely getting one eventually, but right now there is just nothing interesting announced for launch, so im waiting untill something interesting grabs my attention. Chances are higher for me getting an Xbone after the U-turn as they IMO have better exclusives, but will probably wait for Halo on that as well. Wii U and current gen it is for me this year!

i don't think failure rates are going to be as common as last-gen

the tech in these consoles is a lot more proven, fairly conservative design for the PS4, power consumption isn't all that high, and blu-ray disc drives have better life (and if you go all digital, that's even less to worry about)

i'm not concerned at all

Nothing short of Yoshida coming to my house, pissing on the couch and them setting it on fire would make me cancel my pre-order.

Come to think of it, I really don't like that couch anyway, so maybe not even that.

I don't expect it to be a great deal cheaper by Xmas 2014 (although there will almost certainly be bundles of some kind) but I do expect there to be exclusive games that I want to play, which certainly isn't the case with the launch line-up. I literally lose nothing by waiting a few months so that's what I will be doing.

Launch exclusives don't interest me at all. I will be picking up a PS4 when they have an exclusive game that I like, ie The Last Of Us 2.

Personally speaking the first PS4 game I really want to play is Infamous Second Son.
We all know that the next gen party truly begins next year while this year at launch, as OP rightly pointed out, we'll get mostly PC ports of games not truly conceived for the new hardware (Assassin's Creed, the new Call of Duty, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs).
And I also agree that with games like GTAV, Beyond, GT6 and Castlevania Lord of Shadows 2 coming out in the upcoming months on PS3, I could easily decide to delay the purchase of the PS4 until Infamous is released in February/March next year.
While I'm sure that there will be exciting announcement at Gamescom and TGS I think that none of them will be about other launch titles (with the possible exceptions of a few japanese titles like a new Hot Shot Golf, a new Dinasty Warriors and things like that, if the PS4 is launching in Japan this year).
So yeah, being rational I could really well wait until next year.
But even if I skip the launch, I know it will be really hard to resist not to get it as a Christmas gift and also this console won't get a price drop for at least a full year, so it's not like delaying the purchase will give me any benefit if I can afford one later this year.
At this point it's better to enjoy the system from the beginning LOL :D

the only thing that would make me second guess ps4 launch is if xbone gets a price drop. hope gamescon paints a better picture of what we are going to expect with ps4. still lot of blanks to fill in to completely sell me on the purchase.

Thank god Amazon preorders are still open. Had to place a preorder for PS4 today after cancelling my old one through Gamestop. (Had a bad experience there today)

Really hope I still get one before Christmas. The launch lineup isn't that exciting, but for the first time in ages I want to buy a piece of gaming hardware just for the tech it has more than anything.

I had a Sony TV during last gen, it sucked.

Yea first year will defiantly not be amazing although drive club at launch does help. The good thing is the service still includes ps3 and vita so you're basically getting a set of new games for the same price. It's great for those keeping their ps3s but even though the system has a lot of value, I don't like having two gaming consoles in my home.

I'll probably try out gaikai to play last of us.

Given that DriveClub, Outlast, Secret Ponchos and Don't Starve are already on the roster, pretty sure you're wrong about that. That's more than the value of the subscription right there straight away, and that's just to start things off. Who knows what the other months will bring, but there are literally hundreds of indie games being made for the PS4 right now, so there'll be plenty to add to the PS+ catalogue. I'd imagine many devs will actively want to get there games on as part of the PS+ roster so they're at least guaranteed some funding from the downloads instead of getting lost in the sea of releases.

I don't know why people are so quick to underestimate PS+ when all evidence points to the contrary. Sony won't want to lose the good will it's garnered with PS+ among it's consumer base. It's one of the best deals in gaming right now, and a massive draw to the Sony platform. Sony would be stupid to let all that good will and consumer value proposition incentive slip away.
