"Hello Again" Apple holding mac-centric media event October 27th 10am PST

Have any Adode CC professional video editors made the switch from Mac to Windows and can tell me of their experience? I haven't used a PC in fifteen years but I can't take this anymore.

You won't have ProRes and would have to use the equivalent AVID codecs that are actually just as good, but if you need to give a ProRes file to someone there are few options to convert it, I have a plugin for After Effects that does it and is free, but don't know about paid options.

I'm baffled here.

The problem is that Apple makes too much money off of lightning.

If i "upgraded" to the base 15" model, I'd have half the hard drive space I do now, same amount of RAM, USB ports I can't use without adaptors, no SD card slot, and it would be more expensive than what I paid for my current MBP.

If this thing was ::much:: cheaper, like a factor of several hundred dollars, I'd be on board and deal with the minor inconveniences and probably love this machine. But holy shit it's impossible to justify me buying this.

Yeah this is what's getting me. I've got an MBP that's falling apart right now, but I don't want to lose ram, hard drive space, and all my fucking ports and pay more than what I paid a half decade ago...

There is no 'OK' or 'not OK'. If you don't mind the lack of that particular port then go ahead and buy it. If you do mind it then don't.

What I don't understand about this: they go all in with USB C in their Laptops but stick to Lightning with their phones.

Why is this a good idea? Does Lightning do anything better than USB C in regards to a phone?

Haven't checked the specs or anything but about damn time they released a new MBP, bought one 2nd hand after living with my first MBP for 7 good years, gonna give this one to family and get this one :p

Holy fucking shit.

After today's conference, I can easily say that I am very, very glad I decided to ditch the prospect of buying any future Apple PCs and go with a straight up beefy Windows desktop, with an iPad and iPhone for mobile. Fucking hell, Apple. Overpriced nonsense that doesn't even work with your own hardware? Wow.

It's only been 4 years since they changed the iPhone port, after ten years of use of the previous port. It prompted a big outcry over people having to dump their old stuff into landfill. They don't want to do it again so soon.

I don't think they will ever switch to USB-C. They will go to fully wireless charging sooner or later and dump ports altogether.

The problem that Apple has now is that everyone has caught up. Apple haven't really innovated anything in quite some time, but now these prices, for what else is out there, are insane.

I was interested in the non-Touch Bar version (no one will use it), but at £1449.00 you can bugger off. No chance. The Surface Book blows this out of the water Apple, get with the times.

The Touch Bar should have been a new line of Mac: MacBook Touch or something. Now a MacBook Pro isn't a MacBook Pro.

They've coasted on good design and our lifestyle aspirations but you're right other companies have caught up.

If your Apple though why innovate? you have a fanbase who'll upgrade and stay in your ecosystem.

I don't know about the specifics...but the new surface can switch between color spaces (adobe rgb, etc) with a button press on the notification center

No. Only the Surface Studio can do this. And it can only change between sRGB and DCI-P3 and a couple of custom "vivid colour" profiles.

Mess. I bet if you ask them about this, they'll tell you to do just everything wirelessly.
I'll embrace wireless iPhone syncing when it fucking works reliably. No. Fuck that. I want it to be all cloud based and sync as I go throughout my day and not require me to be home at my computer with iTunes opened. Without having to pay for a service of course.

Is there a macOS equivalent of iPhoto on windows? That's usually the main reason why I still want to get an MacBook but the price is too outrageous.

It works, but you need a different cable that doesn't come in the box.

Not the MacBook Pro's fault but the iPhone's fault that it has lightning.

But actually that tweet doesn't make much sense anyway because even if Apple had switched the iPhone to USB-C already it would logically still be shipping it with a USB-A to USB-C cable that would be incompatible with the new MacBook Pro. Chicken and egg situation. Transition pains that can't be avoided if we're to move on from USB-A to USB-C.

I feel torn.

Retina MPB first gen (2012?). The battery doesn't last even an hour any more. It's heavy and huge so I can't transport it easily.

If I put down 2700¥ (including tax), I get the same memory (16gb), double hard drive space, and a better CPU... But that's about it. I also have to sacrifice the SD card slot, USB ports, magsafe, and large screen (although screen size isn't so much of an issue, but I'm just saying).

I really need to upgrade but I know the price of this isn't going anywhere, and it'll probably be another year or two before the refresh.

I can't switch to Windows. It needs to be macOS.

How can I justify this to myself?!

I currently have a Mac Mini from 2012 with, according to Wikipedia, a Quad-core Intel Core i7 (i7-3615QM).

How does that compare to these Macbook Pro's i5 and i7 processors? I have no idea how fast these machines are compared to my current Mac.

Whoa, hold the goddamned phones. If I can do this with the 1tb/16gb ram option I'm fucking IN.

Wait, actually, how is the touchpad on the surface book?

Most people I've talked with said it matched the MBP but the keyboard wasn't as good.

I prefer the keyboard on the Book and the touchpad on the MBP.

But tbh, they're both pretty fucking great at what they do.

If you use your Mac for normal work even a 4 year old i7 quad is fast enough for everything.

If you use it for video rendering and the like you'll have to wait less :D

About the same. That version was a solid solid machine. The only thing lacking in it is the GPU.

Looks like the same old apple to be.

Nah, Apple really pushed the market in previous years (like 6 and 7 years ago at this point). But ever since then it's been minor revisions and port removals instead of actual innovation.

The touch strip is cool, but when you package it in a machine that forces it's users to carry around a bevvy of dongles to actually use it why bother? If anything it should have gone in the 12" Macbook over the MBPs

I'm not saying Windows 10 is a bad system, even if I don't like the way it looks and feels. Thats just personal taste.

But do the Trackpads feel like the one on my Macbook now? Did they fix HDPI scaling? Do fonts still look like shit?

I use my Windows 10 PC for gaming, my MBP for work. I used a Windows 8 Touchscreen Samsung Notebook for a while and it was a pain. I even switched back to an ancient Macbook Pro until I got the Retina because I could not deal with it anymore.

The Surface Book trackpad is the best PC trackpad I've used.

It's CLOSE to MacBook perfection. It's really the only thing I miss on my 15" rMBP.

I've tried almost all laptop trackpads (XPS, SP4, SB and a handful of other machines) and the Surface Book has the best out of the bunch by far.

This is promising.

How is windows for workflow stuff? I haven't used it in a while, but I use hot corners a lot and the different desktop spaces on my MBP.

I'm out on Apple stuff for a while until they get this sorted out. I bought an iPhone 7 and mostly like it (coming from a 5), but I certainly won't be buying a new Macbook Pro in the future nor a phone if they keep being this "courageous".

Apple has gone from one of the most user friendly device ecosystems to one of the least in less than a year. Hard to believe this is even the same company.

Yea agreed. It's really really good, but still not quite as good as the MBP.
I'd say they're both so good that I wouldn't let either alter my decision too much.

The speakers are rubbish on the Book compared to the MBP though, if that has any relevance to anyone.

Thanks. It's still very fast and I love it. I really need a laptop though and I don't want to go backwards.

I'm a webdev so I don't care much for the GPU.

Ok, I'll have to try one some time.

But honestly, being the best of something thats absolut garbage otherwise isn't hard. All the trackpads I tried always felt like they are fighting against ancient monsters deep deep inside Windows, who wanted to make it feel like a mouse in Windows 3.1.

So I know USB-C and Thunderbolt share the same physical size connector, does that mean I can use any USB-C peripherals in these thunderbolt ports?

apple post jobs in the 90s was shit and apple post jobs now is shit. feels like the man was the vision behind the whole company
He was. Say what you will about the man, but he was Apple. He knew what he was doing. Even when he left, he knew what he was doing at NeXT. His hubris did him in. Is that the right word? He thought he was too good for real doctors and believed way too much in his wholistic medicine techniques that he didn't know what he'd done until it was too late.

And fuck Cancer.

We'll never know what we'd have now if he were still here. We have to live with that. I like Tim Cook and all but I dunno, a lot of the time it feels like "I don't believe Steve Jobs would have done this."
