Yeah, sorry, Disneys "small list" has alot better choices.
:lol

Well good news is that Blu-ray isn't limited in only one big movie studio's exclusives :p It has three of them -MGM not counted- which combiles a much much more impressive movie list.

It's the A2 which is 1080i

The AX2 is the 1080p one.

The XA2 does not support 1080p/24, so it's technically not true 1080p like the discs themselves. It outputs in 1080p/60.

Samsung BDP1200, PS3, Pioneer, Sony BDPS1 all output in 1080p/24. Better technology = more money. I do wish Blu-ray had a 1080i/720p player to combat the HDA2.

I can't imagine anyone saying that right now Bluray's catalog is more impressive.

For whatever reason, the BR studios seem to be focused on mostly newer and/or blockbuster releases. I mean, the fact that Universal is putting out a movie like Sneakers or 12 Monkeys speaks to their strategy. I want movies of that tier to come from Warner, Sony, and Disney.

At least we should get Blade Runner, even if it turns out to be a little bit after the HD-DVD release.

Toshiba XA2 can output 1080p/24 through a firmware update, and It seems that the Europeans will get that update soon.

I didn't know that. In that case, I'll be ditching my A2 and getting the XA2, which IMO is the best overall High Def player (next to the PS3).

Yeah, XA2 is great, but Unfortunately I can't buy it until I get a new Sammy 1080p HDTV.

I would argue WB has put out just as many quality catelog releases as Universal. Grand Prix, Casablanca, Bullit arent exactly brand new blockbusters. In fact, of my HD movies, all but 1 are Universal/WB releases. I own a single Weinstein movie (The Matador = the awesome) (and DVE).

I guess I'll have Grindhouse pretty soon. Hopefully as a single movie. So that'll make two Weinsteins. I also kinda want to get Derailed.

Completely agreed. I only own 2 Universal movies: Fast and Furious and Serenity. All of my HD DVD titles are Warner and Mission Impossible 3. HD DVD is still fighting Blu-ray not because of Universal but Warner titles not on Blu-ray.

thats kinda the odd thing, by coincidence most of the WB movies I do own are not on BRD at this point. There are some exceptions (Departed, Bullit), but most of them are HDDVD only at the moment.

Also, still waiting on my Brotherhood of the Wolf HDDVD to come in from France. It shipped like 2 weeks ago. Free shipping + ocean = long wait :lol

Sony released Volver, which is still my #1 high definition release. They need to ramp up the Sony Pictures Classics support on Blu Ray, and I'll be in hog heaven (more Almodovar, 2046, etc.).

Disney on HD-DVD ?!!
Disney's Name To Appear Over Unrated Film
Only days after renaming its home video division to Disney Home Entertainment, the Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it intends to release Badder Santa: The Unrated Version on November 20 in HD DVD and Blu-ray. In the past, Disney has gone to great lengths to make sure that the Disney name did not appear above any releases that did not reflect the wholesome, family-oriented viewpoint of the company's founder. However, the 2003 Billy Bob Thornton movie inarguably contains the raunchiest language ever delivered in a Christmas movie, and the "unrated" version includes deleted scenes that magnifies the scatological nature of the film. The film, released in high-definition formats at Christmas time may also confuse parents who see the names "Disney" and "Santa" on the cover of the packaging, along with the name of the film's co-star, the late John Ritter.

HD-DVD is doing it out of necessity, IMO. For most studios, it doesn't make much sense to release your premium library until there is a certain installed base to take advantage of it. This is exactly what they did with DVD. For new releases, they can ride the wave and marketing of the DVD releases and release a premium edition later if they want.

Oh and. Not my cup of tea but...

Includes 7.1 PCM. Completely unnecessary for a film like this but whatever.

Given Universal's absolute dirth of recent blockbusters/big releases, the fact that they have to release catalog titles isn't really surprising.

I would take Children of Men over any of the BR exclusives, with the possible exception of Casino Royale.

my tosh A2 arrived today from amazon, i upgraded to firmware 1.6, and pretty much all my movies crash, whats the problem?

do i have a bad player, i mean movies will play for 10 minutes, and crash, or they will crash during promos, its pretty annoying, anyone with any experience with this?

movies that have had problems playing that ive tested so far are batman begins, aeon flux, matrix, matrix reloaded, MI3, King Kong

only movies that played well were riddick, mummy, and every dvd i tried

If that's the latest firmware, you might have gotten bum hardware. The movies that crashed all use IME, so that may be the issue. I'd contact Toshiba or get a replacement from Amazon.

Fixed.

It hurts me being BD-only. It hurts real bad, but I'm trying to hold out.

That's fine. Maybe by the time his next film hits video, Blu-Ray players will be in a reasonable price range.

I'm sure BR players will be much cheaper by then. Volver looks absolutely breathtaking. I eagerly await more Sony Pictures Classics releases on Blu-Ray.

Well format war over, Harry Knowles picked HD-DVD

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32838

The kicker is... that it can play the 9000 or so DVDs I already have, as well as the HD DVDs. That Backwards compatibility feels right. Also - from the demonstrations I've seen, HD DVD looks better than the BLUE RAY discs. I also love that the player has an upconversion that raises the quality of my existing DVD library to 720p and sometimes 1080i. I've already tested it out and DVDs that I watched last time I watched them - look better than they had before.

Wow, you'd think Mr. I watch movies all the time and know the industry, would be a little more knowledgable about the two formats...

Yeah Harry's reasonings are hilarious, but hey, this is Harry we are talking about here. I'm not surprised.

Anyway, I noticed there are 5 one minute HD clips from The Matrix on the Live Marketplace right now. Have to say I'm amazed at the HD transfer for this movie, looks great. I still don't want the second and third movies though, so hopefully when it hits BRD I can buy just the first movie. But I doubt it. :/
