Hitman (2016) PC performance thread

FYI to those with G-Sync monitors, I had to go into the Nvidia control panel and specify G-Sync as the monitor setting, and set V-Sync to off manually for the application to get it to take hold in the game. When I first booted it up and turned off V-Sync in game, I still got bad frame stutter and tearing.

The game is super smooth now that I was able to force those settings in the control panel, though.

Thanks, the game is actually playable now after doing this. I was getting what felt like microstutter on my 980 Ti before.

Wanted to chime in with my experiences....

4790k stock
16GB DDR3 1866
GTX 970

1080p, Ultra detail, High Shadow Maps, Medium Shadow Resolution

I installed the game for the first time yesterday (3/19), but performance is much improved over the beta during fullscreen on DX11. 50 FPS during the ship tutorial and 60 during the cuba training mission. Benchmark averages 54 and only drops below 60 during the dark crowd scene and when they show the helicopter(?).

DX12 takes a nosedive and is around 46 fps, but stutters like crazy.

Smoothness and FPS are way better than the beta!

Searched for this thread just to see if anyone else is experiencing stutter like I am even with a decent frame rate.

Guess so :(

I wish you could turn off auto-save b/c that's the only "stutter" I've seen so far with a 980 Ti / i7 3770. I found that DX12 locks my game up while loading the level. DZ11 doesn't, but stutters more.

any recommendation for locked 60fps at 1440p on an I7 + Gtx 980 Ti? Too many drops at the crowded areas of the shipyard and benchmark keeps crashing

This game is very buggy for me on 980ti SLI, on both DX11 and DX12. I can't get past the second tutorial mission without locking up

Going to see if the April update fixes anything.

Today patch 1.03 has added a couple of options and DX12 fixes to the PC version:
Options
- Added an option to the game launcher that allows players to override the ‘default memory safeguards’ and allow them to use any available resolution and graphic quality settings.
- Increased resolution cap for players with 3gb graphics cards from 1920x1200 to 2560x1600.

DX12
- DX12 shader and pipeline cache now included in all Steam builds.
- Fixed a graphical issue with transparent windows on DX12.
- Improved vertex colours on DX12.

What's your GPU temp when running this? Because I got 80c, all maxed out, vsync on with option 1, but I can't get 60 FPS, I'm between 45-54 fps. It's the only game I have this temp, in example with Witcher 3 maxed out but capped on 30 FPS I get 65c, so is the game very unoptimized?

Bumping this since we got a chance to talk to IO Interactive's Lead Programmer (Jonas Meyer) specifically about the PC version of the game.

He mentioned that they did a straight port on DirectX12 and that generally to leverage DX12's true potential (such as certain hardware features) we'll have to wait for games to ditch DX11 entirely. Might be thread worthy, but I can't create new threads.

You can find the full interview here http://wccftech.com/hitman-lead-dev-dx12-gains-time-ditching-dx11/if you're interested.

Very nice interview, thanks for the update :D

No problem! Hopefully, with the incredibly high Windows 10 adoption, developers will be ditching DX11 fairly soon. We won't have significant performance boosts until then.

How will we measure performance boosts to DX11 if DX11 will be ditched? -)

I don't think that we'll see much performance increases. This has always been my stance here: these APIs are nice because they give more power to the devs who want to have it and allow them to hand tune stuff which were a black box for them previously but otherwise we're GPU limited in both DX11/OGL in most games these days and thus neither DX12 nor VK will bring much performance increase. The best figures we're seeing at the moment (some +10%) is the best we should expect really.

For the beginning, but not in the upcoming years.
With ExecuteIndirect, Multiengine, Resource Binding Tier 2-3 and the explicit nature of many things like resource transitions, a really well craftet DX12 engine should do a lot better than DX11.

Also coming soon is Shader-Model 6, cross-lane operations and so on.

Like always many years will pass till we be there but the future looks very bright.

You are talking about h/w advances as well as s/w though and the biggest performance gains there will be from new h/w, not from DX12.

Of course it depends on what you see as hw advancement and what as software.
If locking out DX12 FL11.0/1 hardware is an hw advancement, than yes, we have to get rid of those to get more out of DX12.

That's right, everything above FL11_1 is new h/w basically, not just DX12 by itself. It's also worth noting that all this h/w (with the exception of async compute although that's debatable) is available in DX11.3 as well as DX12. So technically you can still use DX11 and get the same performance improvements from new h/w features as you could in DX12.

Did anyone try the new patch? I think my DX12 performance is just getting worse - I also think they broke VSync, but maybe I'm wrong. For all the wonders of cutting down loading times, I'm not really sure what's going on with performance on my end.

I only tried DX11 but performance seems way worse, feels like I lost about 15 fps.

It's been discovered that the patch is causing the game to override your graphical settings with its own recommended ones even when you attempt to change them back. This is causing some people to gain performance because it's using settings lower than they were before the patch, and some to lose performance because it's applying more demanding ones.

Also means the gamma settings are reverted to default for those who had adjusted them. Game's way too bright for me now.

I actually thought the beta was more stable. Finally bought this yesterday and now 'exclusive fullscreen' is completely broken for me - game runs with tears and is choppy as hell. Normal fullscreen seems fine though, albeit it works my graphics card like no other (75c after 15 minutes of the tutorial)

Also I can't even see an option to choose between DX11 and 12 in-game.

Same problem, here. This is the only game I reach 80c on with my 970, not even Witcher 3 or MGSV reach that temperature (around 65c on Witcher 3, 60c for MGSV). I solved by creating a profile with Firestorm setting the temp limit to 65c, but fan speed is always at 70% when gaming. I hope they manage to optimize the game, because it's really a mess from this point of view.
You can choose DX 12 from the launcher, but if you use a Nvidia card, just select DX11, Nvidia still didn't update their drivers to support DX12.
Also I read DX12 uses all cores of your CPU, when I noticed DX11 version barely use the CPU, focusing on GPU only.

Interesting. I will have a play with the launcher, but the benchmarks I've seen suggest my card is one of the few that benefits from DX12 (980ti)

I also think there is some kind of bug with vsync and menus as my temperatures ramp up immediately, almost as if the game is rendering insane frame rates when in the menus, rather than capping at 60. Very odd.

Eh, until Nvidia will provide official DX12 support, any GPU will really "support" DX12. Not like they do with 11, at least.

Async compute is merely one part of DX12, it does not mean Nvidia cards don't support DX12.
AMD cards don't support CR for example.

Your previous statement was absurd. No cards "fully" support DX12 at the moment.

Ok, I'm not really into tech things, so you are probably right XD

I still can't explain why DX12 are so poor on Nvidia cards compared to AMD ones.

Nvidia have better DX11 drivers and their hardware is not optimized for because it's not the common denominator.
Catching up with years of driver optimization is also not easy at all.

Because it's not. You're judging NV's DX12 performance based on just a couple of AMD sponsored DX12 games.

Sorry for double post, but does anyone else have problem with wrong Hz in this game?

When i set it 1080p which is my native resolution and exclusive fullscreen i get wrong Hz. I guess it's 30 instead of 60. And there is no option to change Hz in the game.

It looks as it should in fullscreen, but in exclusive fullscreen i get wrong Hz on my TV and everything is yellow and laggy.

Performance is massively improved for me on DX11. Not tried 12 yet but can't see the point as I'm not dropping any frames now. Happy so far.

Yeah my monitor has a 50Hz and a 60Hz mode and for some reason Hitman defaults to 50Hz and won't change lol.

We are not the only ones sadly. A lot of ppl on Steam have this issue. And it wasn't fixed.
I guess it's too hard to add option to change Hz in graphics settings... :/

When did you last try the game? Got it at release and was disappointed.

I played it before and after the latest patch today. Before I was dropping frames in Paris and my 980ti was reaching 79c - after the patch, no frames dropped and my 980ti is only hitting 70c so they've fixed it well enough for me. DX11, full screen all settings maxed out.

This is great news. I haven't touched the game yet. Been waiting for all the patches to make this playable at 4k.

970
On DX12 with High LoD and Textures, and both shadows medium it uses up VRAM, and eventually goes above that certain 3,5Gb...
Also in the little church that table with the candle is murdering my performance, in standstill it nonstop moves between 45 and 70fps.
