Horror-GAF |OT|

Anyone else kind of glad we've been moving away from zombies? I feel like the number of zombie movies have really dropped off. I just wished we moved onto something good though, instead it looks like supernatural found footage movies are gonna be with us for awhile :/

Found footage has been a big thing for a while now, the return on investment is so huge on these even if they are shit, they probably turn a little easy profit.

Zombie films still seem to come out almost weekly on shitty DTV releases.

I'm questioning whether to take it off my list for another foreign film. I can watch it any other time. I don't want friends and family watching with me to hate me haha.
I think the list needs more Japanese films. Put Audition on instead!

Blah. I had to scrap the logo I was doing for the 31 Days of Horror thread. It wasn't coming out as good as I had hoped. Gonna try and whip something up fast so I can get the thread up since everyone is already talking about it.

And I liked the Host as well. Great director and cast. Keep in mind it's more of a family drama centered around a monster attack than a straight up monster wrecking shit movie.

I decided to keep it and judge for myself. Plus, I think it's on Netflix so it's not too much trouble to find.

I kind of wish this thread was a bit more active. The horror genre is probably my favorite right next to action. Anyways, what's a notable horror movie you guys have yet to see? I have not seen Suspiria yet. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a lot of the classics from the 20s, 30s, and 40s. I should probably get to them soon.

I feel like Suspiria is a film I'll appreciate more on a second viewing. I remember enjoying myself with it but felt that while there was plenty of style, it was light on substance. There is supposed to be a bluray of it dropping in the next year, I'll probably do a rewatch then. If there is a horror film that deserves to be seen in high definition it's probably that one.

In terms of notable horrors I've yet to see, in the past couple years I've started working my way through Italian horror. I've only seen a couple Argento and Bava flicks. I plan to have a good Italian presence on next month's horrorthon.

So...Trick R Treat 2?

Has there been any movement on this? It's been a couple years now since it was announced.

Take your time! I'm sorry that I'm posting a lot about 31 Days of Horror. I can't contain my excitement :D

I'll watch Host with that in mind. I'm just worried that the people viewing with me won't enjoy it.

I haven't really watched much pre-80s horror aside from a handful (Halloween, The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead). I feel like I missed out on a lot of important films that defined the genre. I'll most likely watch Suspiria twice, though, I anticipate the bluray to cost a pretty penny.

The 70's were amazing for horror, if you haven't seen these you should change that pronto.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead, The Omen, Black Christmas, Deep Red, Phantasm, and Carrie. These are some of the most well known so I bet you've seen at least a few.

I'm also a big fan of the classic Universal Monster series. If you're interested in those than I can give you a few recommendations.

Edit: Damn, banned.

My girlfriend and I watched Repulsion for the first time the other night. More of an art film than a Horror film, but I like art films, so that's fine. Really awesome camera work in this one. We then watched Scream for the first time last night. I don't usually like Slasher flicks, but the way this messed with those who are familiar with Horror was really amusing.

Edit: And if I can ask, could you recommend me some great, old horror movie? '50s, '60s, something from that era that aged well or is just fun to watch. Most of those I tried were unfortunately pretty boring :(

Some movies I watched last year (when I realized I wouldn't be able to reach 31 movies, I switched to a personal challenge: watch at least one movie from each decade since the 1890s):

Carnival of Souls (1962)

OGa0bgP.jpg

What a great movie! Psychological horror at its finest, one of my favorites.
It's no surprise that David Lynch and George A. Romero have cited it as an influence on their work.
This movie is in the public domain

A Bucket of Blood (1959)

Horror comedy. The plot is very similar to The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), but with less fantasy and a different brand of humor (satire). It has aged very well IMO. I enjoyed it a lot.
This movie is in the public domain.

House on Haunted Hill (1959)

All in all, it was entertaining, and while I'm not too satisfied with the ending, Vincent Price's performance and the general atmosphere made it well worth watching.
This movie is in the public domain.

And here's one from the early '70s:

Horror Express (1972)

Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Telly Savalas are awesome (and so is "Father Pujardov", played by Alberto de Mendoza).
The plot goes places you wouldn't expect, and is at times so silly that it falls into "so bad it's good" territory.

You should join in with the 31 days of horror this year its fun plus great way to discover more movies

That's my plan! The only problem is that when I finally find horror which is worth watching, I do it immediately, I just can't wait. So yeah, I do have problems with self-control, but I'm sure that by the end of September I will have a list of few movies I still haven't seen. And I hope to find lots of hidden gems on your lists :)

Ah, October feels so close. I'm already trying to line up some movies for 31 days of horror.

My favorite time of the year.
Although Japan doesn't celebrate Halloween as much as home, it's getting me in the Halloween spirit early, because they have small displays and Halloween related things in stores already (even last week).

The weather in Cleveland went from "hotter than hell" the last few weeks to "cool, brisk fall" yesterday.

And since I've been itching to start the Halloween season I started watching horror movies yesterday. Last night I ordered a pizza and watched the original "Nightmare on Elm Street" for the first time.

Being a lover of horror movies for pretty much my entire life, I've never really been into this series. I've seen all of the other 70s-80s classics except for this series. And I must say, It's not my favorite, but its also not the worst. It took me half the movie to realize that was actually Johnny Depp and not just some dude that looked like him, lol.

Tonight I'm watching Part 2. And I'll continue watching the series so that when I'm finished I can watch the 4 hour long documentary about the series.

Unless I get attacked by a yeti, the 31 Days of Horror 5 thread will be going up tomorrow.

But really, what are the chances of 2 yeti attacks in one week?

Yes! and Yes! Also confirmed today with my buddy that we'll be heading to Cinema Wasteland Horror Convention this yeah since he's been super sick for the last few months and is finally getting better. We went a few years ago and it was real fun.

Aw yes, and it's brisk and windy here in NY as well. Totally in the spirit right now. Also, Krampus looks godly and in the same vein as Trick R Treat. I wish it came out this October :/

Edit: looks like December 4th is the official release date.

Very nice, but isn't that thread supposed for the whole of October? Nevertheless, I should be able to find at least a few horror movies to watch for free (legally) and share my thoughts about.

I'm hyped. I've got a huge laundry list of horror movies I need to get around to watching, so we'll see how many of those I can get through. I think this year I might get those "super fucked up offensive" movies out of the way just so I can say I've seen them - you know, A Serbian Film, August Underground, that shit. I have no actual interest in them but as someone who enjoys fucked up movies when they're done right, I at least want to be able to tell people from experience that those movies suck.

I'm super pissed that The Witch won't be out in time though, or even this damn year. So unfair.

Yeah, I'm fully expecting all of those to be garbage. I can stomach all that brutal stuff, but it's the stupidity and inanity I can't stand. I'll probably just do a few of them and fill the rest of the month with stuff I might actually like.

Unfortunately the more horror movies you watch the fewer good horror movies there are that you haven't watched. :(

I find that a mix of good and bad works well for the 31 days

I am going to say it: Serbian Film is a good movie. It is fucked up, but it is good.

I also think Human Centipede 2 is excellent, so whatever.

I suppose I don't like films that revel in the violence unless it's done in an absurd or comical way, and even then the comedy or absurdity has to tickle my fancy in particular. If it's presented in the proper way though, it can make for a great movie. I think Salò is a legitimately great film, for instance. Hard to watch, yes, and it's basically nothing but violence, but I never felt that it "reveled" in it.

Yup, it's for the whole of October. It always goes up a bit early to allow people time to collect what they want to watch and to ask for suggestions.

That's the only way to do it, as far as I'm concerned :)

The Mist is incredibly frustrating because it has all the makings of a classic, but that cheap CGI absolutely ruins the film. I still feel like black and white is the definitive way to watch the film though.

I still need to show Serbian Film to my girlfriend at some point.

Human Centipede 2 was more to my liking than the first, in which the execution wasn't on par with the idea.

Human centipede 2 was amazing. Not only was it one of the darkest and grimmest movies I have ever seen, it retroactively changed the tone of the first movie to seem to be almost a light, colorful cheerful fantasy in retrospect.

I am in total awe of the second centipede movie, and what it did. I love it. I might not ever watch it again, but I absolutely love it.

Well that sells me on Serbian Film. Loved Human Centipede 2.

If you end up buying it off amazon, the only one that's uncut is the DVD version that has a runtime of 104 minutes. You will miss out on some pretty important scenes if you don't see the uncut one.

I guess I need to watch HC2. I've heard it's jacked up but at the same I heard it's terrible, and you all are praising it.

Just copped Prince of Darkness today on bluray.

I enjoyed it more than the first, but I wouldn't personally call it an amazing movie. I just prefer a more psychological/paranormal horror in general. I definitely want to watch the upcoming last part of the trilogy though.

I ended up going to see The Visit. It was an okay movie. You'll probably guess the Shyamalan twist about a third of the way through it, but I felt like it was less about the outright horror and more about the suspense because you clearly know that something's wrong and have probably guessed what by then but you're cringing at every little moment waiting for shit to hit the fan.

I read the plot synopsis to the third. It sounded like shock value cranked up to 11.
