HTC Vive Launch Thread -- Computer, activate holodeck

Random Elite Dangerous question I was hoping someone can help me with. ED is a pleasure to play in VR. However, the galaxy and system map controls are a complete mess. Does anyone know if you can force the mouse to show in the map screens while in VR?

I've definitely used a mouse in the starport menus, but I haven't tried it in the galaxy map.

Well either you're super sensitive or the 10 other people aren't sensitive.

Are you sure it was running at 90fps? I feel like with how you move inches at a time by default this is an overreaction.

The feeling of being dragged makes me sick. It's the same reason I felt sick playing HL2 with a DK1.
A feeling similar to the "spins" when you're drunk.

I'd definitely prefer a teleport for the game, but the game itself is just bad.

Cool - I played around with it yesterday, could not get the controller to work in VR and got totally confused by the motion controls.

I was suuuuper tired though. Going back to it tonight.

It looks like the guys might have missed their goal of pushing a big update today. They're all travelling to our (apparently) celebratory meet up.

Which is probably going to be very sour affair because no press will look at the game with E3 around the corner, so we have had four reviews out of a possible two hundred, and a bunch of Vive gangs messed up our Steam rating :(

If there's no update when you try again, I recommend playing it seated with a joypad. It'll be WAY more playable roomscale after the update but that might not be ready yet.

Wow, it does seem to be running way better since early access.

Have everything set to low, but can set the resolution to 150% which seems to be the sweet spot for a good looking and fast running experience on GTX 970.

Yeah the guys have been pushing really hard on it. Glad you see an improvement - should be an update soon to improve even further.

You can use the mouse in the galaxy and system maps. When I play in VR, the game always starts in a window on my desktop. So I go into options and set it to borderless full screen. That way, the mouse never tracks out of the window.

This would really, REALLY suck for those people who do have larger play spaces though.

If I went through the trouble to clear out a large room, and games started doing this kind of thing, I'd be very annoyed.

Eh, not everything needs to support the largest play spaces. Especially when competition comes into play. Plenty of sports have arbitrary restrictions to keep the rules and challenges the same for everybody. Besides, I already outlined an alternative scheme that allows larger play spaces to be used, but not counted in the same bracket as a smaller one. Can use the two ideas in tandem to allow people with larger spaces to compete with the (more popular) smaller spaces.

Competitive games where the available play space directly impacts the challenge, and yet the leaderboards treat everything as being equal are fundamentally flawed.

Its a know bug.

Will be fixed.
Within a timeframe not disclosure to us :(

gonna set mine up tomorrow, the size of the box was a surprise compared the dk1/dk2 boxes, not even opened it up yet. do the lighthouse boxes need to be drilled into place? i was thinking of velcroing them on top of some high furniture, that's usually pretty secure with a few big strips

If you're velcroing on top of something (high up), you should be fine. If you're velcroing to the side of something, you'll potentially run into issues. Keep in mind that they have a 120 degree cast to the IR laser light. If they're not pitched somewhat downward (30-45 degrees), they'll not reach directly below themselves. Likewise any ledge that juts out below them will further cut into the downward cast. If your play space is far enough away from them, this isn't much of an issue, but if it's close to where they will be, you'll want them at the very edge of what they're stuck to with some downward tilt.

Thanks, downloading.
I was gonna warn you that the game, at this stage, is extremely light on content.

More content will be unlocked supposedly soon, but as of right now you can go through what's available in less than 15 minutes.

On the bright side, I really like the game's aesthetic and UI. Basic game mechanics are fun, but desperately need expanding upon.

Edit:
That is like some sort of tower defense game right?
pretty much yes

That is like some sort of tower defense game right?

It's a little more RTS/FPS hybrid. You build structures at base points that help you mine nearby resources (which are used to build more stuff) and defend those structures from waves of enemies. You yourself can defend as well with these sort of energy frisbees and a turret that you can build. The current map has about 5 points that you can teleport to and hold.

I should be clear that it's early access though. They only have an endless mode right now and it's a bit easy at the moment. Future plans are to add more modes such as one to actually capture points against an AI "boss" doing the same, and to add more things to build, enemies, and maps. They're saying to expect updates every 1-2 weeks. That said, it's one of the more polished and charming VR experiences out there right now (at least until you have a crap ton of little bots swarming around along with enemies and the framerate starts to chug a bit).

Yeah I was looking at it but was afraid it was a little bare bone. Will wait on it for now.

There seem to be a lot of shooting gallery/arena vive games already. What makes Raw Data stand out to create so much hype?

The guys on the DLC podcast shouted it out, with Christian Spicer calling it the best VR game he played, but they didn't go into details about it.

I haven't played it so I'm only guessing here:

  • Has a lot of weapon variety between various guns, a bow and arrow, and a katana that can deflects bullets
  • Feedback for killing robots looks pretty satisfying
  • It's one of the better looking VR games graphically
  • Seems to be a really polished experience
  • It has co-op

Watch all of their videos from these guys.

I have played it. They quite literally make me think I played a different game and not in a good way.

Because it is more. No lie and thats good because its one of the complaints about VR titles. But it is basically MORE.

Man the church scene in destinations workshop is unbelievable. Really loved the photogrammetry from the lab but this felt a lot more real, probably because things are more upclose. Still some issues that could be fixed in post, but man I want to stay in there and take in the atmosphere.

Ok game but so far from being worth its asking price its almost laughable. Luckily we seem to be getting closer to the point where we will see some of that feedback dropping prices(already have according to the devs I spoke to). But man. some of these are just insane price wise.

Some studios are completely dependent on the income from their VR game and the player base isn't very large yet so it's understandable.

In no way shape or form does that alter the price comparison for value across software. Nor should it ever. Luckily even the indie devs we deal with the the channel are already agreeing on that and moving away from it.

I guess. It's up to each individual to decide what's worth it though. Idk I feel like if those smaller games were all $5 then there would be a lot of struggle.

I hope you're right tho.

I just tried Call of the Starseed for the first time. I love how immersive it is. I tried to read a piece of paper with a candle and I set the paper on fire! lol

The H3VR modular weapon system is getting quite a bit more advanced. Much more variation in what and how you attach things to the guns, and a more realistic scope view. Also another new teleportation idea test - this time gaze based to facilitate movement independent of having multiple weapons (or a two handed weapon) equipped. Haven't tried it in game yet, so I can't comment one way or another on how effective it is.

Hi everyone, dev working on The Solus Project here

We have now pushed a very large update with a completely new Vive control scheme.

Patch notes here. Beforehand the design was broken with a touchpad making you walk forward, and all sorts of weird inconsistencies. The controls have now been completely reworked.

Please feedback here (or make a thread, if anyone would be so kind) and we'll take note.

Is there a reason you need a crouch button when you can just physically crouch in VR with the Vive?
