HTC Vive Launch Thread -- Computer, activate holodeck

So what's the deal with the HTC VIve warranty sheet that came with my delivery?

Inside the transport box (not the Vive's), there is this warranty paper that states:
said:
"THIS LIMITED WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY to malfunctions caused by unplugging the micro-usb / power cable from the "headset, "handheld controllers" or "base stations" while updating the firmware;

So basically, a firmware update malfunction can brick your hardware and void its warranty?

Got my HTC Vive earlier this week, loving it so far. It's funny how experiences that would be relatively dull in a 2D world suddenly become amazing in 3D VR.

Falling below minimum spec, I've been a bit worried my GTX 780 couldn't handle VR, my system check brought me up in the middle of the orange area and I'm not aware if VR takes advantage of SLI yet.

Either way its been an amazing experience, so thought I would share my initial impressions in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOXFvCjR6LA

Sounds right to me. Don't unplug anything during a firmware update if you don't want to brick your devices. I don't see the problem here...

We got Vive to our offices today and I played some of the lab for a while. Pretty impressive, even after trying stuff like Rift and Gear VR. Very immersive, the controllers are really nice and it felt nice to teleport all over the place.

Setup was kinda pain in the ass though, took like 6 hours even with a guy who set up his own a day or two ago.

Speaking of the Gear VR, now that I think about it, nothing is stopping HTC from making a similar product, but one that has lighthouse sensors built into the housing. It'd be a small extra cost, but give true positional tracking (within lighthouse bounds). Sell the lighthouses and controllers on the side, and make an a la carte version of the Vive headset available and you could have a VR ecosystem where you could start with cheap VR (relatively speaking) and climb the ladder without much in the lines of wasted money.

How is the shipping situation lately? I haven't kept up. I'm considering cancelling my Rift order at this point and just hoping my May Vive order comes earlier than later. I've come accustomed to waiting and DS 3 has finally broke me of obsessively tracking the VR shipping situation.

Cant you just put the sensors on shelves or something nearby though? Thats what penny arcade said they did.

I cant comprehend it being 6 hours that sounds crazy

Setting it up was more of a hassle than I thought it would be too. Didn't help that my graphics card drivers crapped out during install, the firmware of the controllers had to be updated and the HTC Vive setup you download apparently has a virus.

Anyway, Tiltbrush is great, Job Simulator is cute but doesn't really have anything beyond novelty for me, and some of the VR labs things are fantastic.

In terms of presence, I at one point wanted to put my controller down on the table of during Job Simulator but corrected myself at the last moment, hehe. Though it was disappointing that in real life I have a debilitating fear of heights, but VR ravines do nothing for me.

Maybe if you play long enough in VR you're going to acknowledge the heights less in real life too.

Thanks all, put them all on my wishlist to download when I get home.

Maybe consider A-10 VR: http://store.steampowered.com/app/436220/ - silly title, I did not check it out, because I was sure it has something to do with simulating A-10 plane :) I actually realized it's not a simulator while watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOXFvCjR6LA

Again, not from personal experience, but reviews are good, for example:

I did it yesterday. Didn't get a chance to play it but I'll add it to my backlog. I kinda just want to keep playing audioshield and spare pirate trainer. Had to download some songs since soundcloud wasn't showing all of my favorite rappers songs. Punching the orbs to gunshots was a highlight from yesterday.

The deep, dark scenario in theBlu is legitimately creepy as fuck. Amazing - I'm so glad I bought it - I wasn't going to bother because I already demoed the whale encounter at an event, so I didn't think it'd be worth it. I only actually got it to show off for others, but I definitely got my money's worth.

Other than that, I've been playing a LOT of Audioshield, still, and put about an hour into Final Approach last night, which is a lot more fun than I thought it'd be too.

I'm basically waiting patiently until everything settles down with Elite Dangerous now, as I'd rather not spoil the experience with the current bugs I've heard about.

Hopefully Chronos is playable on Vive soon. I might give Luckey's Tale a go tonight before it gets patched out of working too.

I agree about the deep dark scenario. Of all the games I played that one feels the most real. The little particles of shit floating around and the flashlight are incredible. Its so creepy.

That's the idea of VR therapy yes. But for me, I just don't acknowledge the virtual heights to be in any way dangerous. Hmm, maybe I just haven't found the right game yet.

And it's crazy how good it looks.

It WAS the first thing I played after I realized I'd been wearing the headset wrong, so maybe that's cheating a little bit

I mean that it had software issues (calibration wise, requiring reinstalls until it was detected...), hardware issues (HDMI cable was borked out of the box?!). After it started working, at one point different user logged into Windows and the software just didn't recognise the headset anymore until the software was reinstalled (again).

Sorry if that sounds vague, but I was doing other work and just listened to my co-workers go about on it (mind you that the company specialises in tech learning so it's not like they were technically unsavvy). The offices is a giant cube with glass walls so that might have something do with the calibration thingies.

in the end, Julia had to kick some butts and she gave me the code personally.

I've had Julia kick butt for me too, only took all day, but I have my code! And a Vive! HTC gave the wrong address to DHL too, unbelievable!!! I mean seriously this is the hardest product launch I've ever dealt with EVER!!

I've been having a blast with my Vive since I got it last week.

I've had no ill affects with the Vive until yesterday, when I tried Lucky's Tale, and immediately started feeling woozy as soon as the camera started panning by itself. It seems like seated VR is just not for me.

So after some research, I think it may actually be my power supply that is bad rather than my video card. I bought a new PSU at lunch and will install it once I get home.

Question for those that have their lighthouses set up using some of the mounting stuff suggested in the OP. I know I can get the floor to ceiling poles at the hardware store. Is there any place that would see the mounting stuff, though?

Photography store? Or a general clamp at the hardware store and then thread a 1/4" bolt through it somehow

Revive is far from being perfect, you will get latency and tracking issues

I don't think that's it. The game seemed perfectly smooth and tracking appeared flawless. The dizzy feeling only came when the camera would move by itself.

Just took delivery!

Quick question. I have a 12x9 rectangular room.

Should I mount the lighthouses on opposing walls or opposing corners?

Basically, is it better to mount on the lines in this picture or the squares?

The basestations cover a 120 degree field. Corners are usually used because you can guarantee full room coverage.

You could do walls, but you would risk lighthouse not being able to reach the corners of your room.

Can anyone measure the Vive box itself for me? I know the size of the shipping box, but I need to know the size of the Vive box itself minus that extra packaging. Thanks in advance.

The box it ships in, or the Vive box? I've got scales, a tape measure and a Vive right here

outer box: 69cm x 53cm x 33cm @ 8.7kg

actual Vive box: 58cm x 42cm x 22cm @ 7.4kg (hm, maybe my scales are messed up - that's pretty big difference - edit: nope, triple checked and that's the weights)

Here you go

Corners assuming your measurements are in feet. That should be within the flash pulse sync range, and will blanket the entire room with coverage. Centered on the walls would create a rectangular-ish coverage range inside the room that's ~45 degrees offset from room dimensions.

Walls would lead to something akin to this:

Just played a bit of The Gallery. This is really the most polished game from everything I played until now for the Vive. Really cool game. And great interactivity with the environment. And fireworks.

You have to do the soft pull (trigger doesn't click).

ooooh, Steam VR desktop lets you click things with the motion controllers? So you can use the controllers to point and click IR style?

I really want to see if MAME light gun functionality (via mouse) works with one of these things. Someone try one out please, lol. And tell me how bad the pulldown/tearing is on a 90hz set when you play a 59hz arcade game in that theater.

Cross-posting from the general VR thread.

I like this early days of VR. Another game popped up on Steam out of the blue. Early access, but VR is in early access as a whole anyhow.

From the creator of Day Z.

Out of Ammo is an intense virtual reality strategy game for the HTC Vive that puts you in the commander's seat against wave after wave of soldiers. Built exclusively for the HTC Vive to make use of motion tracking, the game allows you to move around the battlefield to build defenses and issue orders. You can even directly possess your units to directly engage the enemy making use of cover and preparing your magazines carefully so you don't.... run out of ammo!
