Pretty sure the vast majority of anime fans actually realize that isnt the case.
I definitely do.

Yeah I agree with you. But then I met some who do and it's like bruh are you for real. Of course, the anime isn't the problem and it's other things in life that cause that. I had a guy in my anime club leave his fiance because she wasn't all that similar or ideal to characters in this cutesy show with moe characters that he watched. Or that was the excuse he used. It's not the show or the girl, but some people truly have problems with that type of obsession or think its a shame that real women don't compare.

And some of us can respect both(animated and real) people though. Actually a lot of dating sims did help me to interact with real life people in a better way. Like how we need to listen first, then select the best choice to answer..

Yeah. I think that's fine, it's just the people that don't who drag others down though. Interesting point about dating sims though.

Oh wait HolyBaibai was a female? Assuming the OP is a heterosexual male after reading this thread, this seems like a huge crush!

Now it actually makes sense. OP's obsession makes sense too, now. Crushes can be frustrating and rage inducing like gauwilbZubbubYugyukgskyvusk. I should know because I've been going back and forth with my real-life crush for the last 10 years or so. He admittedly has cool hair, but his constant demands and requests for me to wait for him have gotten tiring.

I hope it works out for you in the end, 10 years is a long wait to move up the relationship ladder. (I can't tell if their is sarcasm involved here)

Oh right, that's good then if he was able to draw inspiration from someone to better himself. Kudos to both.

Cajun wrote it so eloquently, sums it up pretty well.

Point taken. Obsessive behavior are never healthy, you are both right.

I actually dont like those dating sim games. Boring as hell to me. Dunno why.

I'll admit I stopped reading once I got to the Persona 3 spoilers, but I've read most of the thread so here's my opinion:

OP, I understand what it's like to have admiration for certain posters (I've definitely sent PMs, that upon reflection, are a little embarrassing), no weird obsession, just people I think are cool and wanted to let them know. So I get it, but I'm not sure I'd ever make a thread about them.

Anyhow, never understood the whole sexualization of anime-style characters, especially when the game is still shit. Not that you're into that, but yeah. Doesn't make sense to me, and I'm pretty confident 99.9% of games would be better off without it.
That's what this thread is partly about, right?

Yeah there is a line that should be drawn well before that point.

Those usually lead to being unhealthy, actually... Lol

When they are misguided but for an informed person it shouldn't.

But...but...what if I had a gun to your head and threatened to kill you if you didn't eat a Big Mac?

Under the premise that health is of the utmost importance it is natural to eat the Big Mac as the poison can be worked off and washed out of the system a bullet not so easily.

Also practicing martial arts is healthy so he or she might just disarm you.

Thanks for taking the time to read my wall of text, really mean it. The thread is partly about the 2nd half of the post yes and you may be right, I can't decide if it is or isn't though.

While we're at it, you should try the new hotness in the field that is virtual Anthropology.

I'm already on the case. ;)

I'm glad you enjoyed it, any opinions on it, or is it something I wouldn't want to hear/know.

Whatever floats your boat I say!

I had a crush on an animated Character once when i was a kid. "Nadia: The secret of the blue water". So i can relate to some extend I guess?
While I think there is nothing inherently wrong with waifu culture the problem I see is the representation of girls/women in japanese animated media. But I barely watch anime so I don't want to judge on it as a whole.
Interestingly enough, I do remember a thread by the member mentioned in the OP about feminism and representation of women in anime.

Besides, after reading a study on shipping culture and doing some research on my own this whole waifu thing is pretty mellow when it comes to the "weirdness-scale". ;)

I actually liked HolyBaikal as an user*, she was always passionate about her favorite things and I never saw Holy talking about creepy waifu stuff. Dunno why so many people dislike her.

*Except in that thread about Tales of where she refused to accept the issues the series have. That shit was annoying.

I think you may feel a little silly about some of the stuff you wrote in the future, but as long as you're happy OP that's all that matters! P3 is super awesome so I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm not super into VNs, but I'd highly recommend checking out (if you haven't already)the Ace Attorney series and Katawa Shoujo. The former is a lite VN with more gameplay elements associated with it. Very light hearted, but also a lot of strong storytelling. Also great characters! The latter is a straight up visual novel with a premise that turns a lot of people off, but it's surprisingly well written. It's the kind of VN you start because it's too ridiculous sounding not to try, but most people that do will be caught off guard with how respectful and powerful the execution is. ALSO IT'S FREE.

Even the classics like Tokimemo, Love Plus, Sentimental Graffiti, Memories Off, Air, and Kanon?

None. although I liked the anime adaptations of Air and Kanon and own them on disc.
but those dating sims are so dull. I really cant play most anime style games as much as I love the artwork because of how they play.

This is kinda lot to tackle here and in your OP, but to focus on this part, I guess:

Well, something you become emotionally attached to and is possibly drawn with attractive features is gonna be attractive, but as long as you realize it's just a fictional character, and don't actually get obsessed with it, it's whatever.

"Waifuism" is generally, and was originally, used ironically as a way to say "I like this character a lot" in a goofy way.
It's become legitimized since it's initial usage as a goofy term from 4chan to become more of a term of "I actually treat this character as my obsession", and that's a little freaky just purely on an obsessive level.

Thanks for this, I am interested in Ace Attorney, will look into it later, and thanks for reading the post, means a lot for others to read so much.

At first I thought this was a Denis Dyack thread.

Also how is one considered one of the greatest posters on neogaf? If anything, SunhiLegend is one one of the coolest members with all the gifs he has created.

Personal opinion is all. I agree that SunhiLegend is pretty cool, double so with the video he created about the post.

Wow that was a strong post. Kinda hard to read though so I didn't get to finish everything. I played Persona 3 on the psp and I enjoyed it as well. I think I can relate to you in believing that the characters are interesting too =]

As for VN, what kind would you be interested in? Action- packed ones or ecchi for the sake of being ecchi?

It's cool to see you like this stuff
a lot
. I bet you'd also enjoy watching anime as well haha :p

Believe it or not, I haven't watched Anime in years. Last one I saw was called MushiMushi or something, about a dude with a gifted eye or something. I don't watch anime in the same way that I don't play many anime inspired JRPG's. This is all just a realization that I miss that stuff and want to get back into it, little steps, maybe large ones, who knows. VN's, I'd like lighthearted stuff, I have enough action and what-not from other genres to satiate me. Ecchi is not necessary, but won't put me off from it.

Most considered her shtick annoying, but I found them funny. Though I still consider her a joke poster, and even doubt her sincerity about being female. I think it was just part of the act about wanting to be cute.

Alright guys/gals, it was great talking to you all and I'm glad that the thread turned out the way it did, tag and all. I'm surprised it gained so much traction and that we hit almost 1150 posts in under 8 hours, I think that's incredibly impressive.

For all the comments out there with legitimate concerns, thank you for taking the time to voice them to me, I will not take them lightly.

In the end, I'm glad I went through with this thread, even if it was a lot to write down and a lot for you all to read. I still feel nervous or anxious even though it's all posted and in the open, but I guess that's just natural. Thanks again to everyone who read my post, thanks to everyone who talked with me, I feel really blessed today.

I'm going to bed, I have no idea where the thread will go once I'm out, but hopefully it'll be okay. Love you and see you all later! ~

Baikal's main problem is that they would make threads asking a question - "Why isn't X popular?" - get answers on the question, then argue that everyone was wrong because Baikal personally liked that thing so that couldn't be why.

It was pretty obnoxious and happened a lot.
