Wait a second... cant you control the case fans using motherboard pwm slots/headers?
I have my fans powered that way and can use ATIoverdrive to change their speed, but i never do it.

I have Sharkoon Silent Eagles @ 1000rpm and they come with molex to 3 pin and PWM headers but i dont use the PWM headers, just run them at full speed as they are very quiet.

Ah cool, with the setup i posted on last page are there any changes I should make now that I realized my current computer probably has fans on full blast all the time.

Noctua fans are very expensive though...

How does the TRUE (with one push fan) still hold up against today's heatsinks?

It's a TRUE. It will be king forever in its legacy.

Just going by the heatsink itself, the TRUE is still probably the best there is. It even outperforms its successor (Venomous X) by a little bit. It's a lot smaller than the DH-14, and with push-pull, it can actually outperform it. The only downside with the TRUE is that because the fins are so dense, it needs probably 1000RPM fans or so to start getting good performance out of it.

I have a 4870 and I got a second one off craigslist a few months ago for crossfire goodness. Unfortunately it's been somewhat hit or miss, both with drivers and certain games taking hits or showing great improvements. For instance, if I use old drivers GRID runs great, but BF2 runs like shit. If I use the newest drivers, the opposite happens.

I'm wondering if I should just sell my 4870s now and upgrade to say a 6950 or 570 (but really this might give me +- the same performance?), or just sell one 4870 and wait, or just wait altogether till later in the year to upgrade?

For reference my CPU is an e8500 at 4Ghz, so that might be holding me back somewhat too. I game at 1920x1200.
(I plan on upgrading to Ivy Bridge when it comes out.)

Thanks!

Haha.

I had a 4870 and an E8400. Used to game at 1920x1200. Bought a second used 4870 1Gb. Found the CF a bit hit and miss. Had stuttering in a lot of games.
Sold both the 4870s and bought a 6950 2GB and it made a huge difference. I am able to play Crysis 1 at 2560x1600 all Very High settings (except Shadows). 30fps. And more than that, a single card is so much less hassle than the CF setup I was running.

My current plan is Ivy Bridge + 2nd 6950 whenever Ivy Bridge is out. The 6xxx cards supposedly scale much better than the 4xxx card.

Up the 2300 to a 2500.

Change the HDD to a Samsung F3 1TB. You don't want to run a Green drive as the OS drive, since they have reliability and latency issues when it comes to lots of accesses (due to head parking). They make great data drives, but poor OS drives.

Or, you could consider including an SSD if you wanted, and keep the 2TB as a data drive. The SSD will improve your OS performance by a lot, and also reduce PC noise by a lot, since you won't hear the hard drive scratching all the time. This might cost you around $100-120 though.

Damn! This is pretty much exactly what I could hope for.

Cheers, I think I'm gonna do this, unless someone has any other input.

Really? I have it and im getting not so good temps with 1000rpm Sharkoon fan. (They have low static pressure though)

The ambient temps are sort of warm though, 20C or so in my room and CPU goes up to 56c max at full load. It's a Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.6ghz. Shall i get a higher RPM fan? (Preferably, Gentle Typhoons)

Well like I said, the TRUE is extremely dense, so basically it needs high static pressure to actually pull the air through it.

Hmm, i wont mind dropping some ££s for a higher static fan. Dunno how much of a difference it would make though.

What is the cheapest and best SSD atm?

It's going to be priced at $89. Not the best value, but the competition at the 40-80GB range isn't very good.

Their 120GB SSD drive is going to be the best value, at $209.

The Intel drives don't give the best sequential performance, but their random performance is great, making them perfect OS drives. They also have the best reliability in the business.

Does anyone know a good 1TB HDD on Newegg that isn't the Samsung Spinpoint? It is sold out and I am trying to figure out that final part before ordering a new PC build for someone.

Are my current hard drives still good to use? I can save a few bucks if I just stick with them. I currently have two caviar blues one is a 320 gig which my windows stuff is on and one is a 500gig with my music ect.

With the saved money I could buy a SSD for my windows stuff and video games and use the 500gig for music ect.

here's link

Yes.

Those drives will be a little slower for games loading, but if it clears up your budget for an SSD, it's completely worth it.

I'm still trying to pinpoint the cause of the stuttering and crashing I've seen in just about every game I've played recently. I noticed the problem shortly after I overclocked my CPU, so I'm starting to think that the processor is damaged. The GPU and CPU temps aren't even remotely close to being too high, and there aren't any video artifacts. The hard drive and RAM are fine according to diagnostic software, and I've swapped out my motherboard and RAM with a spare motherboard and RAM module to make sure the RAM isn't an issue. I've even tried reinstalling Windows so I think I could safely assume that software isn't causing this. I've seen a few memory violation errors (0xC0000005), and games generally seem to skip or stutter in the same areas every time. I tried opening OCCT earlier, and it just hanged at the splash screen. Strangely, the splash screen won't stop running, even after I terminated the process through task manager. Does it sound like this could be a processor issue? It's probably not caused by my video card, right?

First thing to ask is, when you set your CPU back to stock speed, does the problem go away?

Unfortunately, no.
Okay, so it sounds like we can rule out the RAM and the motherboard.

What about the hard drive? Run some checks (fchk and I'm sure there is some better tool as well) to make sure the drive is OK. Even better if you can try another drive.

I don't think it's your video card but it's possible. If you have an extra one, swap it in. Did you install the same drivers when you reformatted? Try some older drivers just in case.

I'd be surprised if your CPU is fried but maybe it's possible. I'm not sure about the memory violation thing (maybe run memtest86+ if you want to be sure about your RAM). What CPU? What did you overclock it to? What did you up vcore to?

Can you boot up Ubuntu off the USB stick and use it for a while? See if anything bad happens there (who knows).

If you can check into any of these things, this is how I would start investigating it. And I guess you could swap the PSU if you have an extra (though I think that is very unlikely). What brand is your PSU by the way?

I have run a couple hard drive tests as well. No errors were found with chkdsk or HD Tune.
I raised the CPU FSB by 10 MHZ. The processor is an AMD Athlon II X2 245. I don't think I changed the Vcore. And the power supply is an Antec Neo Eco 520c.

Hm, that shouldn't do anything... have you tried resetting the BIOS to default?

I just tried that. Now it seems a bit worse, lol. There's a ton of hard drive noise when I play a game, and the stuttering is more frequent.

Im so glad, im sure you guys dont care but i found a company that recovers all the data on your hdd when its failed, they are coming to pick the hdd up this week. They say they have a 95% succes rate so lets hope im not in that 5% lol.

Anyhow how are some of your experiences with external HDD's for content and files? Will you need to wait for things to load up when your using a usb 3.0 port? Like lagging movies or what ever.

God, someone please help me.

Nvidia GTX 560 Ti. Drivers crashing.

Drivers 266.66 something about NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver restarting etc. It's really screwing me over! Anyone had this problem and actually fixed it?

Tried beta drivers and it gets worse. Games are artifacting like crap.

The card is overheating and becoming unstable. RMA it.

It's not drivers or anything?

Very doubtful. Drivers crashing can be a sign of an unstable video card. Artifacting is a dead giveaway.

You can try reducing the clock speeds or increasing the voltage before RMA'ing it, if you want. Have you been overclocking it, or is it running at stock speeds?

It's a factory oc card...

I underclocked it to normal speeds and it's still dying. Goddamnit. RMA's gonna take forever!

Im using a 160gb drive right now and I dont even have half of it full, just 70gbs or so. I want to buy a 240/250/256gb SSD but 250 bucks is a big step up, and I don't really feel like dealing with the hassle of two drives. Is a 120 really going to be tight with say 4/5 games and not much else?

Yeah, sucks. I've had that happen to one of my cards, but I caught it within a day so I just exchanged it at the store.

A lot of the better manufacturers will offer you an express RMA option if you're in the US.

Ran into some extra cash so put it towards the PC as I plan to make this a longterm investment.

My previous PC which I also had custom built, lasted me from 2004 till now so I'd say that worked out well.

Canada, EVGA... No Canadian HQs.

ok, my Caviar Black 1TB harddrive keeps getting choppy and slow the more i load into it until it just deletes everything. Is this because of faulty HD? or is it not configured properly?
