So excited, until the last pic. I'm not a fan of pre built water coolers.

Honestly the H70 was an impulse buy. I had the 212 PLUS but then I grabbed the H70. I may or may not keep it, we'll see.

I was going to buy this at first, but the thought of it leaking all over my cpu innards would have had me crying.

I'm probably going to go with the Noctua DH-14 or the CM Hyper 212+.

None the less, nice pickups Smokey. Are you building soon?

I'm hoping to by the middle/end of may, maybe sooner depending on how aggressive I feel like being with cash. Feels good to have bought SOMETHING though. I've been talking about this shit since summer of 2010.

About to order the Silverstone FT02 Exodus recommended earlier, RAM, and PSU. Saving GPU for last.

This will be my first build and just saying it now...I am going to be in this thread like crazy. I'm already sort of nervous just thinking about it lol

Yeah, it is funny that they advertise the board being able to SLI 4-Way though. Which is odd given there are only 3 slots and I guess if you are using smaller cards you could, but not sure.

Only way would be with 2 GTX590s or 6990s.

Smokey, I just built my first ever rig this Sunday it was a breeze. My biggest challeng/fear was putting in the CPU and applying thermal paste. Not sure why it was so nerve racking. I also have the 212+ cooler and that was very easy to put on...but yeah for me it was the cpu and applyng the paste...outside of that a breeze.

A good video to watch is the one on the first page of this thread, the long one. They build a rig using almost the same parts you have. I watched this first since I never built one and it made it look so easy and it was. they used a stock cooler that alread had paste on it, but once you are comfortable on how much to use you should be good.

Nice, this will be my first build as well. I can't wait until I get all the parts in.

lol...totally forgot about those cards...even though I almost did get a 590, yeah it would work easy with that set up..that is how they get the 4way sli then. I do wish it had a little more room so I could add a dedicated physics card, but I think I am good with my dual-580's.

Is there THAT big of a difference between the Vertex 2 and 3?

That $200 c300 is calling me...

A cursory glance shows that Vertex 3 is almost twice as fast as the Vertex 2 in optimal conditions.

A 128 V3 will also cost you $300.

I also probably wouldn't want to be an early adopter in case the thing has troubles. At least with the c300 it has been out awhile and seems to be pretty reliable/highly rated.

Glad some others are doing this for the first time as well. I remember vividly Amirox's experience with building his PC. His ordeal is what I worry about the most. I'm sure I'll be straight though I work in IT for ffs

Yeah I've got the V3 in my newegg list as of now, was just waiting for them to come in. 2X as fast though is pretty sweet though. So is that $200 tag on the c300 :p

If you're just using it as an OS drive, the Vertex 3 won't be that much faster. The benefit of using it comes from its very high sequential speeds, which will lead to much faster loading of large data items on the drive (in my case, games). It's not really worth the extra expense for most people.

Are you looking at the 128 V3 or 256?

Well the Vertex 3 is SATA III and new Sandforce controller,

Take a look here, but its a preview of the final version. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4186/ocz-vertex-3-preview-the-first-client-focused-sf2200
SATAIII isn't huge, it's just transfer rates. Not likely that you can transfer to a drive that has capabilities of writing faster than 3.0GB/S, nor will your SSD be able to gather enough data fast enough to max out 3.0GB/S. On the enterprise class drives, yes. Consumer grade, not so much.

If your build includes 2 580s I think a vertex 3 is justified. Not that much more when you have over $1000 in GPUs

Just a heads up. The following PC is for sale (I'm selling this for a buddy who has more money than sense it seems). It originally had a second 580 in it, but YuriLowell already snagged it:

> Core I7 930
> 2x EVGA GTX 580
> EVGA Classified 3 (mobo 1)
> EVGA X58 3X SLI Classified (mobo 2)
> Thermalright Venomous X RT
> Corsair Obsidian 700D case
> Silverstone Raven 2 case version 1 with version 2 fans
> 6GB Corsair Dominator GT 2000 RAM
> Plextor Sata Blu-Ray Player
> Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Edition
> 2x Sata 3 Western Digital Caviar Black
> 2x OCZ Vertex 2 Turbo 60Gb SSD
> Logitech G-19 Gaming Keyboard
> Enermax Evo Galaxy 1250W PSU

He's willing to part it out, but would prefer to sell it together for a good amount off. Pretty nice rig for anyone who doesn't want to bother doing the research for a fairly high end setup.

PM me with any offers guys! Thanks. Oh, and if you decide to offer on the whole PC, let me know which motherboard and case of the two you prefer.

^wow. Why on earth is he selling that? That will probably fetch almost $2000 used, I would imagine.

Heh yeah. I'm impatient, and my 80GB Intel is feeling small, so I'm grabbing a 240GB Vertex 3 as soon as they're available.

@Smokey: I'm also going to build for the first time soon, keeping a real close eye on this thread for news and tips. Hope your build goes smooth!

So the new Sata 6Gb/s ports aren't that vital for consumers yet? Just quicker loading like TheExodu5 said and otherwise about the same if a bit faster.

I have in my possesion:
i7 2600k
G.SKill Ripjaws X 8GB RAM
2x Smasung Spinpoint F3 HDD's

What I'm planning to get:
ASUS p8p67 Pro
Corsair 650d case or Lian Li Lancool PC-K62 case
Corsair ax850 PSU (Modular)
EVGA GTX 580
SSD (Don't know what brand yet, but will use it for OS)
Noctua DH-14 or Cooler Master Hyper 212+
Windows 7 Home OEM

I still have alot of items to get. I should be ordering my case and CPU cooler within the next 2 weeks. I'm saving the mobo and GPU for last just in case there is a problem.

It's not the first time he's done it either. He goes through phases throughout the year where he's really into PC gaming, then after a while of playing whatever was the hot game for that period, he sells everything; only to do it again the following year.

I can save you a bit of cash on that evga 580 (not to mention you'll have a lifetime warranty). Just saying...

I'm fine honestly. However, this is a good opportunity for you guys in here looking to buy and save a bit. I can get him to be quite flexible on the price for most of the components or the whole rig itself.

Well the only thing that will max them out is sequential transfers. The Vertex 3 is already almost maxing out the port on its own, at 550MB/s max theoretical transfer rates.

Random 4K transfers are still closer to 50-200MB/s (~200MB/s under the most ideal conditions with a Vertex 3), so not maxing out the 3Gb/s port yet.

I don't think we're going to see much higher random transfer speeds any time soon. SSDs rely on large parallel data writes/reads to make up most of their speed, and that is only achievable with many queued requests or large sequential transfers. That's why, if you'll notice, the Vertex 3's QD= 0 (queue depth 0) random read speeds are not that fast...in fact, they're a tiny bit slower than the Intel G2.

Nice! I kind of wish I would have went with the FT02 over my HAF X. I was all against the rotated motherboard and window on the wrong side...but I've changed my tune at this point. The better airflow + much quieter case would have been worth it in the end.

Aren't you worried about the reliability of the drive though? It seems like Intel is the only one who has really got a tight QA control.

No, not really.

From the stats we got, Intel was at around 0.5% RMA, and OCZ was at 2.5%. Not nearly as good as Intel, but within a good range for electronic hardware.

I did want to go Intel, but the performance of the Vertex 3 is just too high to ignore. I'm getting a very large drive, so I will be greatly benefiting from high sequential speeds.

It's one of the mid towers that are basically full towers, like the Corsair 650D. (you could look at that 650D as well, btw)

on the ft02..what about SLI 580s..specifically the asus model? I'm getting one to start, just thinking down the line if I ever wanted to.

edit: looks like amazon has it for $10 cheaper and is eligible for Amazon Prime. Will get it from there.

I don't know if this has been mentioned on this forum yet...
but the rumour that the 6950 1 GB version couldn't be shader unlocked has been debunked at techpowerup.

So for those who are looking to save a some money on a video card, the 1 GB version of the 6950 just got a lot more attractive. (Not to mention it performs almost exactly the same as the 2 GB version under most resolutions.)

The Asus card basically take up around 2.5 slots from what I've read. The last PCI-E slot there is 3 away from the end of the motherboard, so you should be fine.

So I've been planning my new computer build in my head and had been pretty set on the Silverstone Raven 02 for a case. From reviews it seems really quiet with good airflow. How does that 650D compare to it? I'm more interested in a quiet pc than anything. I will be overclocking a 2500k along with a Noctua DH-14.

The 650D should be good with proper fan control, since it does have 2x 200MM fans. Still, the RV02/FT02 are basically the quietest high performance cases out there.
