"I Need a New PC!" 2014 Part 1. 1080p and 60FPS is so last-gen and your 2500K is fine

256 GB can easily be too little and I would recommend getting a second cheaper drive. But it just depends on what you are going to do with it. If you really use all the space for only games you should have enough. Just have to be a bit careful with some huge games.

With overprovisioining and windows installed he's gonna have around 190gb to work with. That's a lot of downloading and deleting imo

Valid point actually. Alright! I'm sold - I'll be ordering that model you put together this week. Thanks so much for the help!

If I were to add an additional Hard drive, would anything else need to be changed in this build, like power supply or something?

You mount it and format it. Super duper easy to do.

If you do get this Ironsides build, please please post detailed pictures so we can see
and criticize
the quality of their work.

Good lord that Ironside is making serious profit doing that. I wonder, if something breaks down do you go to the manufacturer or Ironside? I should make PCs for people on Craigslist.

List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous. 30fps is acceptable but 60fps is preferable, allthough fidelity > fps.

Looking to reuse any parts?: Not sure, what can I reuse? Stand? Memory?

When will you build?: No real stress.

Will you be overclocking?: No

Jesus, they're charging $630 for a 780. That's like a $100 markup.

Dude, seriously. You and me, Microcenter then you can assemble the legos yourself with the help of the thread.

How many times and different ways does the guy have to say "I DON'T WANT TO BUILD MY OWN PC". If he wants to pay extra for the convenience of having someone build it for him, test it, and ship it then so be it.

You could reuse everything outside of the mobo/proc/GPU. Even the memory should be fine.

4790K + Z97 motherboard of your choice from the OP + R9-290/290X/GTX 780 and you're set.

Pretty much. Not everything has to be the best price possible. If the $400 is worth it, then it's his money to spend.

But @ the 256 not enough conversation: I've been using just that on two builds for two years. Not a single issue. I literally have 15+ games installed on both PCs. It is PLENTY of space for games.

If you hoard porn though......
Couple pages back. JackHerer wants to build an ultimate water cooled build, spare no expense. I told him you, kennah, smokey and I would help any way we can.
Does he know what he's getting into?

Don't worry, I'm just a grumpy old curmudgeon.

There should be a "I don't want to build a new PC" thread ;)

Hey dudes about to get myself a brand new gaming PC, quick questions:

1.- Is the CM HAF 922 all right? It's what they had at the store and seemed decent, just a bit pricey. They don't have the cases in the OP.

2.- I'm getting a XFX Pro 650W. Got good reviews, I imagine it's got the GAF seal of approval???

3.- They don't have a 2x4GB kit, so I'm getting two independent but identical 4GB Kingston memories. I imagine I'll be getting dual channel still, right?

Thanks!

FYI, I'm getting a ASUS Z97-A, 4670K and a R9 280X. Wewt.

1. Yep, if you like the look of it. Cases are a very personal choice. What else does the shop have?

2. Yep, great unit

3. that'll be fine.

I think he's just trying to communicate that it really isn't that difficult to assemble a PC. It will give you a better understanding of how things work, will probably enable you to troubleshoot inevitable issues, and will usually save money. It's good advice. The company who assembles your rig may be very good, but they could also just be slamming builds together. I know the time and effort I have put into my own rig (albeit learning as I went) paid off in the end.

Yep, that's why i asked for pics once he gets the unit.

So. I unplugged all my peripherals to do a windows reinstall, but I got delayed to do a few tests.

PC hasn't crashed since. Maybe the power supply was the issue all along....

Yeah it looked fine to me, I'm not one to put much weight into aesthetics. Honestly I was a little overexcited and didn't really pay much attention to what else they got. :lol I think they have mostly CM and Thermaltake. They have a CM Storm and several CM Elite models.

Another Q: they also only had a CM 412 Cooler, I suppose I'll be fine with it right? :p

Thanks!

So...Z97. I need a board with a PLX chip. These out in the wild yet?
You'd be looking at anything in the $300-400 range. EVGA Classy, Gigabyte Gaming Black, MSI XPower, ASUS Maximus Extreme, ASUS -WS.

I'd check the EVGA forums to be sure, but that'd be my pick of the litter right now.

*edit*

Actually, I'd say the Z97-WS would be my main pick right now, followed by the Classy.

Have they turned their mobo fortunes around yet?

Also...I have arrived at my GPU end game.
Tri-SLI Titan Blacks on the way. That pretty much wraps it up on the GPU/monitor front. Now I need CPU/mobo replacement.

Yep. The X79 Dark and Z87 Classy were both very highly regarded with lots of end-user praise. Same with the Stinger.

*edit*

The ASUS WS board is no-frills, does it what you want to, which seems like it's more up your alley.

I'm on the verge of picking up a 760 with 4GB of VRAM, since I can get $100 in Amazon gift cards from Best Buy. Unless somebody comes out with a must have new model of the 760 at Computex or Nvidia decides to drop info saying the 800 series is coming out by the end of July, these are the cards I've got in mind:
-Gigabyte 760 w/ Windforce cooler
-EVGA 760 FTW

Is there any advantage to picking one over the other? I have no brand loyalty to either.

EVGA has a pretty glorious warranty. I would go with them based on my past experiences.

Gotta admit I don't like the way those Phanteks look aesthetically.
I'm sure they're great though!

No thought for AMD cards? You could get a 280/280X with that money that would give you an extra GB of RAM. Unless you get a great deal on that 4GB 760 then I'd either just go for the 2GB model or the 770.

my buddy wants to build a PC for under 1000 (including monitor). what are the best options here.

I've got a bunch of old games that may not play well with AMD cards, plus I like Nvidia's software feature set. Besides, if I get a 770, it would have to be a 4GB model, and the only one in my price range (~$200 after gift cards) is a PNY card with shitty clock speeds.

Get a Radeon R9-290 or 280x instead. By the time that 4GB of VRAM comes in use, the GPU and memory bandwidth won't be able to keep up.

Literally, 4GB 760s and 770s are two of the worst GPU values on the market. Worse than a Titan Black for 1080p.

Get him to fill out the bullet point questionnaire in the OP and we can better figure one out for you based on his requirements :)

Just saw the Noctua cube base heatpipes. Interesting.
Neat is about it. Probably for looks and Look We Can do it.

Still interested to see how it does.
My build is up and running and I'm migrating all the necessary software and data now.

Thanks a lot everyone, this thread was my go-to place and incredibly helpful during my dozens of hours of part research.
Yayyy
As the OP advises: "Get low profile RAM". I found this out the hard way. While Corsair Vengeance looks cool (and seems to be good reliable RAM), the heat spreaders are cheap metal attached with what seems to be 2 sided tape.
Corsiar named the LP and the giant sinks the same thing I think?
After about 9 months, I finally started overclocking my 3570k today.

I've got an MSI Z77A-G45 mobo.

I've been slowly going up on the speed and right now, have it at 4.2ghz @ 1.17v and max temps are about 72C running OCCT. So I'm pretty happy with the performance and all, but, it seems that I've lost the ability to run lower speeds/voltage at idle. However, my idle temperatures aren't any higher than they were when it would drop down to 1.6ghz/1.0v on idle.

Is this anything I should really worry about? And if so, is there anything I can do about it?
That is excellent. C1E and Speed step should be enabled unless you changed them. Also might have been something running in the BG still.
The 780Ti 6GB isn't a thing anymore
Huh. Well okay then.
