So my newly built PC randomly restarts in the middle of playing Titanfall. I played the tutorial and 3 rounds last night with no issue. Today I joined a game and it restarted within a few minutes. After it rebooted I played 2 matches and it rebooted in the middle of the 3rd. Any ideas?

What's your specs and more importantly your power supply?

Ive got an aged gaming PC I'm looking to upgrade for titanfall and dark souls 2. My CPU is a Phenom II X4 955 and my GPU is a 560Ti. Do you guys think I would get more bang for my buck upgrading the cpu or gpu? I probably cant afford both. Right now I also have 8gb of ram, and usually game at 1920x1080. Thanks for any advice!

What's your clock speed? Both of those are relatively old. If your clock speed is decent I'd say upgrading your GPU will probably have the bigger pay-off short term.

It's stock, I haven't messed around with over locking I was afraid Id blow something up. They're getting ancient I guess I should pony up the cash and do both. Would the 955 bottleneck a newer gpu?

I've never done it before but I wouldn't be opposed to trying it. What's the benefit of using that firmware over the stock firmware?

Thanks for the recommendation, by the way. I'll check it out.
Way way way more options to mess around with.
I've just always run custom firmware
The thing is, im getting cheaper mobo and PSU becuase I want to put the money on the 780ti.
Although watching modular PSU videos right now, holy shit, the difference in cables is insane, but they are expensive, so i dont know what to do. And as I said, I dont want to overclock, at least at the start. Maybe down the line, who knows, but then i will probably have the money to change those.

EDIT: Just looked the PSU I have in the list. Its modular.
CX750 is not modular and not that nice a supply.
IMO I'd rather have a balanced PC with a 780. The Ti is overkill and new nVidia cards aren't that far off.
A Z87 mobo so you can take the training wheels off is more important imo since CPU speeds are barely progressing. Getting an OC board will let that i5 last 5 years so you might as well do that and get a better modular supply while you are at it.
I see. Guess the only components that can really last for a while are the PSU, CPU cooler, HDD/SSD and the case?
RAM too if you buy it at the start of a cycle, but yes those are the ones you can swap over usually.
One of the recommended SSDs is on sale at Newegg currently. I've been waiting for a good price on an SSD for quite some time, but looking at reviews this one has poor write speeds. Is that accurate?
The 120GB size of the M500 doesn't scale as well compared to the 840 EVO, it's still very nice.
I didn't notice a speed bump going from my old Intel 120GB to the 250GB 849 EVO. SSD fast is SSD fast imo.

AMD cards are like at least $70 more than they used to be, i.e. 270x $200 -> $270, but Nvidia graphics are nearly the same.

Looks like I'll be going Nvidia for my next build.

Wait for the R7 265 to release and nab one before the stock runs out and the prices get hiked.

I'm running a 965BE and went from a GTX460 to a GTX760 and saw a massive difference in performance across the board, so I would do a GPU upgrade if it were me. Also depending on your mobo I'm not even sure what the biggest CPU upgrade would be. Maybe an X4 980 or an X6 1100T and even those aren't going to boost FPS very much.

Depends on how cheap or expensive you wanna go though.
I love my GTX 760 but the R7 265 sounds nice if it's $150 at launch but, if it causes other cards prices to drop a bit I'd go with a GTX760 or R9 270x.

Or pony up and upgrade the whole system.

I want to build/buy a PC to connect to my television which is 1080p. The system will mainly be used for gaming and I will not be streaming or doing any other things with it. My budget for the GPU is around $300. Any help with choosing a CPU/GPU/MB is greatly appreciated.

I would like to add that I was interested in the AMD R9 GPU's but the whole price hike makes the choice difficult. Plus I've heard of driver issues with AMD cards as well as heating issues. Anyways I'm open to AMD or Nvidia.

Edit: in regards to over clocking I wouldn't even know where to start so I can't really say if I wanna overclock or not.

I'm thinking about upgrading the MB on my secondary rig. It's my 8320 build and the reason I wanna change it is cos of how disappointed I am with the performance of the M5A97 R2. It's the worst board I've ever used for overclocking that is actually retail capable of overclocking.
Anybody have any experience with good 990x MBs?

You don't need 16GB of RAM, drop to 8GB for around £60.

No need for a sound card either unless you're an audiophile.

Get a Hyper 212 Evo for ~£25.

Swap the Samsung Evo SSD for the Crucial M500 240GB, Amazon has it for £85.

I'd get an IPS monitor over that one, or go 120/144Hz.

Also the benefits of the extra 2GB of VRAM in a 770 are... debatable at best. Amazon also don't do free games with their GPUs.

Monitor wise LG do some good IPSs to swap that Acer over from if you don't want to spend 120Hz money.

Thanks for this, on pcpartpicker I can't seem to find an IPS monitor with such high refresh rates so is it better to go IPS or better to go 120/144?

I've cut down RAM to 2 x 4Gb, cut down VRAM to 2Gb. Swapped that SSD you recommended and added the CPU cooler. I removed the monitor cause I'm still not sure.

Too many options!!!

What's the general consensus on pre-built machines? PC Specialist seem to have good builds. I do enjoy the building aspects of it mind.

I don't think there are any IPS monitors with that kind of refresh rate. I probably conveyed it badly but I was suggesting either go IPS at the lower end or if you want a TN panel grab a 120/144Hz one. It's entirely up to you, that monitor that you had chosen is by no means a bad one.

When ordering parts make sure not to order from Aria, they sting you with delivery. Get the CPU, mobo and cooler from Amazon. You could even use Flubit to drive the price down yet further http://flubit.com/

I'd swap that RAM to the stuff I had suggested in my last post, it'll save you a few quid unless you're not keen on the yellow look of it.

For your GPU Amazon do not give any free games with their products but somewhere like Dabs.com give you Assassin's Creed IV (uPlay code) if that appeals to you. The MSI TF IV card is £250 with them http://www.dabs.com/products/msi-ge...4_1392552150_0a43494ed68e4c7a978300ba4d5a48e6

As for a pre-built machine if you enjoy building then there is zero point buying an already assembled one from someone else. It'll cost more, you'll likely not get as good products inside and when building yourself remember that each individual component will have its own warranty (varying from 2-5 years) whereas buying from someone like that only covers you for a single year.

In my cart I have this one at the moment:
http://www.pccomponentes.com/corsair_cx750m_750w_80_plus_bronce_modular.html#

Seems to be modular, or at least semi modular? And people in the opinions section seem to think is great.

Also I don't have a lot of time, so I can't be waiting for other cards to show up, so I want a GPU that I dont need to change in some years.
Im thinking about he Z87 mobo. Do you know one that is good and relatively cheap? Also anywhere I can find easy overclocking tutorials for noobs like me if I decide to get finally a z87 mobo?

Thanks a lot for all the help!

The one you linked through PC Part Picker and that one are two different models.

Neither are great units though. What sites do you use for PC parts where you are?

I had a brief PM exchange with mkenyon about this but I might have solved my random shutdown problem, at least for now.

I had the PC plugged into a fairly old surge protector. When I enabled 200% scaling in BF4 it would crash soon after. I toned down OC settings on my CPU to 4.0ghz at a vcore of about 1.240 or so (have to look at bios to confirm). Went back to stock clocks on GPU.

After I plugged the PC directly into the wall I noticed that when I enabled 200% scaling I wouldn't get that 1-2 second freeze as the game adjusts. It was instant but the first time I did it I decided to tone my OC back up to 4.6ghz at a 1.355 vcore. It did crash but after going down to 4.5ghz it didn't crash anymore. I don't really like to play it at that scaling but for the sake of diagnosing power draw I had to. I did OC my GPU's +30/80mhz and things are still working fine.

I still think the PSU is being pushed but other than slightly higher than normal motherboard temps (55-59C) I'm happy enough. Have the GPU's with an 81C temp target. I think the SLI is really not doing the temps favors even with my 8 intake fans. Worries me when it comes to summer temps.

Just so people know the parts, I have a 3930k, 850W Seasonic GOLD PSU, and 2 780ti's.

It's just a bunch of trial and error now. Also, I noticed that some games have to be manually fixed with some nvidia inspector tweaks. SLI scaling for almost every game defaults to 4 GPU's and I have to change any game I have to 2. Not sure if this is a common problem.

I'm trying to track down a weird sound in my PC. I replaced both of my GTX 770 cards and they are fine, I replaced the Corsair AXi PSU, and I have an SSD so it can't be that.

I've stopped the intake and outake fan but I can still hear something. The only thing left is the fan on the CPU (hyper 212). Am I forgetting something? It's a weird clicking grinding sound. I don't have a disc based HDD and my mobo is an Asus Sabertooth z77 without the extra fans installed. My case is a corsair carbride

I orderd 3 Nocturna 120mm fans to replace the intake and outake fan as well as the fan on the cpu cooler. any other suggestions would be helpful.

You can rule that out without waiting for the Noctuas by forcing the fan to a high speed and seeing if the weird sound changes, or briefly running the cooler without fan.

Are you sure that the fans you think are running are actually running, and the fans you think are stopped are actually not getting any power? A grindy/clicky sound could come from a fan that is trying to move but is physically stuck (whether from an external object, internal friction or whatever). Or maybe messed up input signal / regulation could keep jolting a fan without supplying enough constant power to make it spin.

Nothing would be that much of an upgrade at that price. You'd need to go minimum of a 760 for around $250 for an appreciable difference.

Amazon.es seems to do some PC stuff going by es.pcpartpicker.com

would be the best >=200 card as an upgrade from the 570 then?

None are worth it really, sideways move. You could sell your 570 too and free up some extra funds and go for a 760 at $250.

Okay I'm excited just about everything is bought, just waiting on things to ship, here are the specs I'm looking at:

MOBO:Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H Socket LGA 1150 ATX Intel
CPU: 4770K i7
Hard Drive: Toshiba 7200 2TB Enterprise
SSD: Crucial 240 GB M500
PSU: Corsair HX750 750W
Case: Corsair 650D
Drive: ASUS BW BURNER
GPU: GTX 680
Ram: 16GB Crucial Tactial Low Profile 1600MHZ, 1.35v

When I need to upgrade I'll just buy another GTX 680 and SLI, those are my plans

Sounds good to me.

Is the ASUS RT-N16 both a modem and a wireless router? Are most combined these days? I may be switching ISPs and I'd rather purchase my own hardware. Right now I have Verizon and the router they provided me is also my modem. I'm just curious if that's standard.

I'm totally clueless about networking :(

I've never over clocked before. Using a 4670k and Haz's guide in the OP. Yes, I am using a Hyper 212. http://www.overclock.net/t/1401976/the-gigabyte-z87-haswell-overclocking-oc-guide

So I do the first step and change CPU Clock Ratio from 34 to 42. Insta crash. I guess I have a dog CPU? I then reboot and change CPU Vcore to 1.2 then CPU CR to 42. Works. Is that all I should do? Is it OK?

Totally new to this.

Edit: lol jk it doesn't even boot with 42.

That's a tidy looking unit.

Thanks!

What do you use to clean your PC? I'll probably get my parts this week and I need at least to know what to use to keep my system dust free!

I vacuum the dust filters at the end of the week. This keeps most of it out. Then every 2 weeks or so I'll open it up and blow out the fine dust with compressed air, I switch over to using this

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001J4ZOAW/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Also having the correct air pressure prevents dust from seeping in through the cracks. So more in than out fans.

And if you use twist ties to lock your fan blades while dusting, don't forget to remove all of them. I forgot to remove one off my Hyper 212 fan and was wondering why my case fans were ramping up to RPMs I've never heard before. Somewhat interestingly, my CPU temps while gaming were 66-68C with a passive heatsink (but ramped up rear and roof exhaust fans), compared to 60C with a working CPU fan.

Hey PC GAF, need some help troubleshooting. So last night everything ran fine. Downloaded drivers and Windows updates and called it a night. When I turned on the PC this morning, Windows tried to startup repair but found nothing. And kept restarting ever since. I removed my Gigabyte R7 260x and it started fine and running. Is it safe to assume I should RMA the video card? Anything I should do to troubleshoot any other possible issues?

Thanks in advance.

Try 1.235 VCore and 4.2GHz. I have the same set up (with a garbage chip), and it works fine. If I lower it much more than 1.235 though (or try to go to 4.3), it BSODs after running Prime95.

Maybe a dumb question, but how do you keep your tower and parts so clean? Do you air dust it weekly and wipe dust off the parts or something?

Haha, I'm also having this issue with my 2 Windforce 780ti's. Luckily GPU Boost 2.0 lets me set a temp target but with that kind of cooler I'd rather not see those temps.

As noted in my earlier post, MB temps got to 60C before I made the changes. CPU is fine but I'm debating on putting a fan next to my GPU's like yours. How did you mount that there?
