Is the Microsoft conference worth watching as a PC gamer given their new commitment to the platform? Yes, I know the PC gaming show is today as well.

In a way, you could say no conference is worth watching. You can assimilate the same information afterwards in a fraction of the time.

Whether you want to watch live is up to you. There will probably be some mentions of PC titles, considering their push for unification or whatever.

Just got a tracking number for my ncase and it's only a few days away. Didn't expect it to arrive so quickly.

Still need to order my loop.

Who is ready for Project Scorpio to make everyone with decent gaming PCs feel bad about not being able to max out games tuned for Scorpio?

So with all the Xbox Play Anywhere games coming, I might upgrade my system for stuff like Forza and Gears.

Currently running a i3 6100 and GTX 950. Whats kind of GPUs could I get before bottle necking my system?

I will be playing on a 1080p monitor and would like to get close to high settings and 60fps.

The RX480 would seem like the default choice for 1080p, and shouldn't be bottlenecked by the 6100 at 60Hz. That said, I'd wait for reviews before making any decision.

Anyone mess with the Dark Rock TF or NH-U9S CPU coolers?

Seem like the best in category that I can get (sub 145mm height) cant decide if the top flow is better/worse than the Noctua which would line up with the front fans directly

SLI'D x2 1080. You can cram quite a bit in the Air 240.

I am contemplating building a Steam Box for my living room TV. Has anyone done this? It's a 54" (which will probably go 60"), so I'd need to make sure it can output fine. I also would prefer that it rests horizontally. The announcement of the Alienware Alpha 2 got me thinking that I could build something of equal or greater power for that price.

Anyone have any experience with this and want to help me out a bit?

Whats your actual budget and is your new TV going to be 4k because we need to start with reality checks.

There are definitely some options for moving forward on HTPC's. I would pick your case first. If you want a full sized video card then you are going to need a certain size of case to be able to hold it. After that its pretty much CPU, Mobo, Ram, PSU(SFX or SFX-L depending on case).

Had to get a card last week and picked up an Asus GTX 970 turbo. I have some time to return it if I like. Is it worth going to the GTX 1070 if I am staying with 1080p? Rest of the PC is a i5 3450 and 8GB ram (side note - is it time to move to 16GB?).

Unless you got the 970 for extremely cheap (how much did you pay btw?) I would get the 1070.

What is the best "bargain" laptop that isnt too heavy and can play average games? I have a good gaming desktop so the laptop is just for day to day/netflix/indie games (Path of exile). I am thinking maybe a macbook but a decent one is around $2000 CAD

My PC is dead. It just doesn't turn on, however, my keyboard's LEDs are on.

I've tried everything, another PSU, another case, another cable, another room, other RAM sticks, which means the problem is probably the motherboard or the CPU (I don't have compatible spare parts for these).

Mobo: ASRock Z77 Pro4 (it always had this problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/2jrt1b/psarequest_possible_reoccurring_problem_with_the/ )
CPU: i5 3570k

So, is there anyway I can know which one is the culprit? It is pretty much impossible to find new Z77 boards right now. If the CPU is dead, then I'll just move on, but I'd like to use the CPU if it is still good.

How much of a downgrade would be going from this CPU to an i3 6100?

So, I've done a bit of revising to my previous build upon discovering some different options for my build. I plan to do gaming, video and photo editing and would like good multitasking ability. As I stated previously, I already have a GPU(750Ti SC), HHD(1T WD), SSD(Patriot 120GB), Case(Cooler Master K350), and PSU(Corsair CX500W). I'll be replacing the Motherboard(MSI G46A Micro ATX), CPU(AMD FX-8320 4.2 GHz) and RAM (Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB) for my build. I'm willing to spend $650 CAD but no more than that. The parts that I've managed to gather are the following:

PCPartPicker part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/cDhQpg
Price breakdown by merchant: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/cDhQpg/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($295.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($129.00 @ Vuugo)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($97.99 @ NCIX)
Total: $522.97
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Can anybody gimme any other tips before I sound off on this? I was thinking of getting an i7 6700k instead of the i5 6600k but I'm not trying to break the bank on this upgrade. Thanks in advance. Just a reminder, I'm in Canada so prices will vary from US users.

Video and photo editing would certainly benefit from HT so an i7 would be preferable if you can afford it, that's not to say an i5 can't do anything like that so if your budget is limited it will be more than fine. (especially if you overclock)

You are missing an aftermarket cooler which is needed for that 6600k. A cheap Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO will do just fine.

That 750Ti is definitely on the weak side so I would upgrade your graphics card too if you are serious about gaming. (read: want to play modern games at decent settings) The upcoming 480 at 199$ seems like it will be a good choice. Check the benchmarks around the end of this month.

No, not 4k. Budget wise, I'd love to stay under $800, but if that's impossible, I get it.

Card wise, I've got a 970 in my current build, so I'll probably upgrade my current card to the 10xx series eventually and move the 970 over, or just buy a second hand 970/980. So yeah, full size card is important. It would ONLY be a Steam Box as I already have my my PC running as my media server, too.

Whoops, my apologies. I forgot to mention I have a Hyper T2 Cooler already. I don't necessarily plan to upgrade my GPU soon as there are still a ton of 360/PS3 era games I want to play but the 480 does look enticing. I do plan on OCing my 6600K. How much performance difference do you think there would be when it comes to video rendering versus an i7 6700K?

Not skylake but it's similar to this:

~60 to 80 is like 33% faster. Overclocking it should get you closer of course.

Ah ok. I see. Thank you very much for your help. I think I might try to just save up for the i7 and buy everything during summer. Once again, thank you so much for your help. It's truly appreciated.

I notice the builds in the OP all include an HDD and SSD. Any particular reason for this other than backups and speed? I'd like to cut costs by just starting with an HDD.

So how long until I can actually buy a 1070 without having to be sitting on a site all day.

I build a PC like a month ago and I still have no video card. Blown

Goddamn chip yield.

You could but it's a shame for how cheap SSDs are these days considering how much they affect the entire system. At least get a budget 240GB one like the Sandisk Ultra II.

No worries and yea I would go for that 6700K too, it's worth it even for gaming.

Won't that fill up incredibly fast? Is that the point of having an HDD and SSD? HDD for storage and SSD for loading? Can you tell I'm new at this?

That's exactly the point. You install Windows on the SSD and some games which are known to benefit from it. All the rest goes to HDDs so you get the best of both worlds. Usually even a 240GB one is enough to install like 3/4 big games or 20 small ones. If you don't keep that many games installed at the same time, it's workable.

I have the following components right now.

Core(TM) i5-4430 CPU @ 3.00GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti
RAM 8.0 GB
I believe i have a 400W PSU

What's the best GPU I can get for $250 that will be supported by this system?

Got this so far. I'm still looking for keyboard and mouse. Any suggestions? I plan on getting a VR headset, probably Vive, maybe Rift. Not sure which to go with if 1070 or 1080 but I'm leaning to 1080.

I'm actually looking into probably getting a wifi adapter for this, I don't want to run an ethernet cable. Seems like it's better to just get an adapter instead of a motherboard that has it integrated.

Hey Gaf, is there much of a difference between

Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz 1151 Boxed Processor $199
Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz LGA 1151 Boxed Processor $180
Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz LGA 1150 Boxed Processor $160

I'm mainly going to be using the PC for

- excel spreadsheets
- I will be using two monitors , maybe even three so I will have some live news streams running on one, while the others will have tons of Firefox and Chrome tabs

-Tons of tabs open on Firefox and Chrome as well different programs open such as Skype, Excel, trading software etc running at the same time

- Some light data mining

-I will also want to stream (mainly older games, visual novels and emulators)

Thanks.

Is power failure still a problem for SSDs, or is that kind of an older problem? I live in a place where i lose power on average about once a month, and I was all set to buy a 500GB SSD and migrate all my stuff over, but that makes me nervous.

I'm sorry if this has been asked a lot lately, but I need some reassurance. I'm looking to upgrade my GPU from a GTX 760 to either a 980 TI or a 1070 for a new 1440p G-Sync monitor I just got and haven't set up yet (I'm currently using a 1080p 60Hz monitor). Should I keep waiting for a decent price on a non-founders edition 1070, or should I go ahead and get a 980 TI, or should I wait for that to drop in price? Deals like this are getting very tempting. I'll provide more information if needed.

What does it show in cpu-z? What is your LLC at?

I turned LLC down to "Standard" because I was seeing really high voltages and high-ish temps. I have a Z170XP-SLI for mobo, btw.

I just switched it back to "High" for LLC, and I am again seeing high voltages. I set my voltage to 1.32v in the BIOS, and I am seeing ~1.38v in Core Temp. CPU-Z is saying 1.32, however.
