I plan on doing a diet that simply involves not eating.

Sending your body into starvation mode will cause your body to hold onto everything that you ingest, good or bad. You'll lose weight, sure, but at an even slower pace than you think you will.

I'd rather be chubby and healthy than skinny and broken inside. Try a whole fruits and vegetable diet before and anorexia one.

If he makes it through and loses weight then what? Losing weight and getting in better shape is a lifestyle change that takes commitment which is what he is gonna miss out on. Say he loses weight what is he gonna eat after? is he gonna go back to his old habits and put the weight back on and maybe even more.

I know right? IF is fucking awesome and has been very easy for me.

Still eating my favorite foods every once in a while (about every 2 weeks) as well.

It's almost too good to be true. I get to eat my fav foods every once in a while as well. I don't even feel like I'm dieting yet the scale is going lower and I finally hit the 170lb's again. Wish I had known about it last year.

I was almost in exact place of OP. Around 220 and went on a huge calorie restriction. It worked great for a while but I hit a brick wall at 175lb while practically starving myself everyday. Felt hungry and weak all the time. But you know as long as I was losing weight I have motivation to continue.

Then the lack of further progress and cravings made me lose motivation and I upped my intake only slightly to the normal BMR intake of 1800kals and I gained 15lb's in just weeks. My body was in a starving state and wouldn't burn any more fat and would instantly want to put on weight and so it did. That kind of diet is not maintainable.

I only started IF around a month ago after having read about it on gaf and few other places and decided to try it out and I'm almost never ever hungry, see clear strength and muscle gain, and I almost have to force myself to eat enough food/protein to hit my macros for gym. It's just crazy and yet everytime I've mentioned this to others they think I'm lying or crazy.

You can decrease the amount you eat substantially without the need to outright starve yourself. Try aiming for 1500 calories with a good amount of protein and lots of green veggies. I wouldn't recommend going too low on your carb count with a restricted calorie diet.

Its more of an argument of feeling healthy versus losing weight. I used to smoke, so I know firsthand, that it does curb appetite. However, you will feel muuch healthier cutting back on cigarettes and refined sugars. And then intializing/escalating physical activity.
Weight loss will happen with proper nutrition and aerobic excercise.

Sensible advice, I approve.

As someone who's tried this before...don't. It's a stupid and desperate way of losing weight, and it's easier to just lower your portions and do some exercise for like 30 minutes a day.

Took a while to lose the weight (lost around 56lbs in the end), but it's healthier in the long run than than just outright starving yourself. Your body won't thank you for it.

I had a lot of fun with protein + whiskey diet for two weeks. Lost like 8 pounds (I'm sure probably 4 or so was water weight), and felt like I got muscle gain. 150-200 grams of protein plus whiskey, and was never hungry because my previous diet consisted of very little protein...

Ate whenever hunger stroke, but basically either made a whey+water shake or a quest bar

There is a thing as too much protein. Your liver doesn't like it.

Christian Bale did something like this for his role in The Machinist:

Christian Bale starved himself for over four months prior to filming, as his character needed to look drastically thin. Allegedly, his eating consisted of one cup of black unsweetened coffee and an apple or a can of tuna each day (approximately 55-260 calories).[1] According to the DVD commentary, he lost 28 kilograms (62 lb), reducing his body mass to 54 kilograms (120 lb). Bale wanted to go down to 45 kilograms (99 lb), but the filmmakers would not let him due to health concerns. He later regained the mass, plus an additional 27 kilograms (60 lb) through weightlifting and proper eating, in preparation for his role in Batman Begins.

Not saying it's a good idea but it's probably possible depending on the person, everyone is different. Can't know until you try but continuing to smoke and drink soda while doing this is much more idiotic and makes no sense.

I don't get why people are asking 'why'. Obviously it's to lose weight as fast as possible. Yes obviously reducing portions + working out etc. would be great but it may not work as fast as starving yourself.

OP, instead of doing this you should try fasting like Muslims do for 30 days without eating or drinking during the day (6am-8pm). You could do it differently, like maybe only drink water during the day, but if you want to lose weight, dont be stupid and do it the way you're thinking of doing. Fasting is a much better option. You can still eat, it just you'll have to wait a long time to eat again. Still, you'll lose weight. I always lose weight when fasting comes around every year.

It's only a couple of pounds though. So if you want to lose more weight perhaps try a juice diet, or some work out program like p90x or insanity.

I did this a couple of years ago. Only water during the weeks and eating something in the weekend. Result? One kilo per week weightloss.

But OP, instead of going cold turkey, buy a carton of Nutrilette. If you drink five or six Nutrilette shakes a day for a ncouple of weeks the pounds will just melt away. And it will be much easier to follow through with this. Believe me, you will get extremely tempted when hungry. Do not underestimate it.

Wait what...?

OP, this isn't going to work. Low carb, eat less, lots of veggies and protein, and at the very least take walks. Drink plenty of water, get good sleep, no cokes, NO SMOKING.

Doing all of that will actually work, and you'll actually be healthy. It's about lifestyle not dieting. Don't kill yourself.

so I've heard. I quit after two weeks because it's obviously not a great thing to do, but experimenting with the body is fun. It wasn't really with the goal of losing weight, but more to see whether I could maintain the same lifts as before while doing it.

Doing extreme diets for any large amount of time with an end goal of dieting is not going to help the OP. If anything, as soon as you get off the diet your probably going to maintain the bad habits and gain more weight. Lessening of calories plus some self-determination helps a ton. Get a diet buddy for the social pressure if you need.

Nor the whiskey, one would assume. :p

Though the constant alcohol might've at least kept him from protein poisoning, there's a whole litany of diseases and nutritional deficiencies that would eventually be induced by such a high intake of alcohol and especially in the absence of almost anything else.

The whiskey was only like 4 oz max at night when I came home from work.

Exercise was the basic squat/bench/deadlift with some side dumbbell stuff, walking anywhere from 3-6 miles (to work/lunch/home from work or walk one way drive home, etc etc). It was a lot of fun, but only really as an experiment to see whether I would be hungry going on a 800-1300 calorie deficit for a few weeks. Surprisingly I was not hungry. As many people in fitgaf say, get rid of the carbs and your hunger will melt away.

I dunno, a 'whole fruits and vegetable diet' sounds like fruitarian nonsense from which you'll also end up skinny and broken inside.

If eating whole fruits and vegetables sounds like fruitarian nonsense, I'm not sure any amount of logic can straighten you out. (no I'm not saying *only* whole fruits and vegetables.)

I have lost the most weight with intermittent fasting and paleo, than I have with crash diets and supposed "weight loss" pills like hydroxycut and ripped freak.

However, I did lift weights at the time and attempted to bulk up. Now I just rock climb and have been replacing the bulk with actual strength and lean muscle.

Smoking will help curb his appetite.

Mhm. I've lost a third of my weight doing this and working out.

Smoking will help curb his appetite.

His goal should ultimately be to be healthy. Smoking isn't healthy and it does far more harm than it ever could do good. If he wants to use it as a tool during a HEALTHY weight loss then sure, but he needs to consider quitting it if his end goal is health.

worst plan ever. I'll read!

not eating and smoking, that should shed the pounds quite quick.

you're probably going to smell very bad as well, you should prepare for the looks of revulsion.

I think it's from an extreme makeover show.

OP, here is my personal tale.

At the start of 2012 I decided to try calorie counting to slim down a bit. I kept a daily log of every single thing I ate plus calories and tried to ensure that on many days I stayed in the 1000 calorie range. Sure there were splurge days when I would easily hit 3000, but I kept that up and by the end of March I had lost 40 pounds.

The only sort of exercise I did was occasionally walking on a treadmill for 20 to 60 minutes at a time. Otherwise I led a very inactive lifestyle.

I'll be the first to say what I did there may not have been the best method, but results are what I was aiming for.

To add to that, afterwards I kinda slipped off the routine and settled in my old ways. I didn't really gain much of the weight back, only about 7 pounds since then, but I really did want to lose much more. After making this post I think I might give that calorie counting method another try now and see hiw long I can keep it up.

Edit.
Just to note, with the previous attempt, I didn't really care what I was eating, only the calories. I don't eat home much either but many places have caloiries posted online.

So he doesn't want to be fat, but he'll be just as unhealthy. Health should be the goal.
This. The whole point of losing weight isn't just to look thin, it's to feel better. Shedding weight by starving yourself wont make you feel any better and your health will be just as bad if not worse.

I did a diet almost identical to this, and it was super effective....

...only I called it 'being incarcerated'. Between the stress of prison and the horrid food that was served, I barely ate anything for months. Lost a ton of weight. So, yeah, maybe the OP just needs to be locked up?

Is there a crime you could recommend?
