If Playstation or Xbox cannot contact an PSN/XBL activation server or equivalent, they will be bricks in the future (highly unlikely)

Etho, I'm not going to explain the point you're missing. Either you're willfully ignoring the core issue or it just completely went over your head.

So, yeah, go on, the whole problem is centered around the battery, apparently.
What core issue?
Games works without internet... it doesn't need to connect to internet to play a physical disc or digital that you already downloaded.

Even if your battery dies you replaced and you don't need internet at all... you can just go on network settling and shift to offline mode that you can play your games.

The exceptions are of course PS+ Games because it needs validade if you still have the sub.

Now of course that is how the PS console handle that... some games just don't work without internet because the developer made it like that.

You are totally missing the point of all the drama.

CMOS Battery dead + No internet (or PSN dead) = no digital and PHYSICAL games launch.

PS4 need to reach PSN server to sync time ONCE when you change the battery. If it can't, all games won't launch AT ALL, including physical offline games.
