Is DS online going to be more like Xbox LIVE than PS2 online?

They've restricted the online system unlike PSP according to people here already so what do you think will happen?

Will they force you to use Pictochat etc?

Sadly I think it'll be more GC, with PSP potentially being the XBox LIVE. The XBox doesn't restrict the online system in any way, but simply offers a single subscription network which ALL games support. The actual hardware spec itself isn't restricted like the DS is.

Oh the other hand for the PSP, the online component is not restricted by hardware but so far there are no signs of any games actually supporting online play yet. Could Sony be setting up some sort of massive online matching service which all games will support subsequently? We'll just have to see.

Ok. So DS would rely on specific software code in a game to go online? And will there indeed be headaches trying to connect this to WiFi spots and such?

I really dont understand the purpose of Pictochat if it is not online? and why the WiFi?

I don't think there's enough information about either online network to make any kind of credible statement.

I was assuming the hardware would play some role. Sony have the PSP connecting to everything already, you just dont have software to make use of being connected. DS you cant even connect yet.

How is the tunneling stuff?

Your first post is a head scratcher Deg as I'm trying to decipher the meaning.

The only thing I can try to allude to is that Nintendo has two different wireless protocols in the DS. Their own custom protocal which works in the range of like 30-50 feet and 802.11B wireless which you'll need to connect to the internet. PSP has 802.11B as well and this is the standard protocal for going online. To create a specialized service you just need to create the content behind it. You don't need a special connection to make it happen. Xbox Live! runs off of standard broadband connections. As for what Nintendo is planning, we aren't really sure. If they are smart Nintendo (and Sony) will create an online community service like Xbox Live!.

The only truthful answer anyone should give your initial question is "we don't know yet."

That statement holds true only for those who've yet to hear word from my cousin's invisible friend's uncle who's friends with this dude at Nintendo who says Nintendo DS is gonna have an online system called the "warp pipe" which will run at astounding speeds and cost all over zero dollars per month. I speak the truth. If you do not believe me, then disregard this message. I am the medium for the message, not the massage.

even i don't have much hope for DS online...

Exactly. Do people honestly think that Nintendo is going to launch a fully-functioning online system like XBox Live?

I think we will have a handfull of online games on the DS by years end.. Metroid, Animal Crossing and Advance Wars. Could be great. I wouldnt count on a single community service like Xbox Live.. I wouldnt even count on being able to search for people online, just look for matches. Im thinking it will be pretty sparse.

This is why i am asking. They have pictochat on every DS! I think its a possibility that they may go for something like that.

Does DS ask for your birthdate? for reminder?

If they release some kind of software for you to go online, it would be cool if you could keep it in the GBA cartridge slot and put online enabled DS games in the DS cartridge slot. Ofcourse I don't know anything about how DS works and what I said most likely isn't possible. Maybe I should just shutup now...

Nintendo's been talking about a "community" a lot lately when questioned about online, rather than going with the unprofitable/niche argument against it. I think DS online will be their big March announcement to try and steal some thunder from PSP's western debut. Mario Kart, Animal Crossing & FFCC being the headlining games (maybe Advance Wars, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl & something from Sega/Namco/Capcom too).
