Is there ever a good reason to beat somebody up if that person did not do anything physical to you or anybody else and what would that reason be?

I like this trick OP where people who didn't even read the OP but just saw the thread title and jumped to comment think OP is asking an absolute question when actually there are conditions of the person not having done anything physical to you.

If someone punches their kid in front of me they're getting dropped.
At that point you are as much of a criminal as they are. Call the police, discreetly film the situation if you can & feel that helps with proving what has happened. If it looks like the child is in danger, maybe intervene and try to detain the person somehow.

Yup. I'm not a violent man, by any means, but if someone called my daughter a cunt, I'd break their face.
So what you are saying is that you are a violent man.

To 'beat someone up' suggests physically attacking them until they're incapacitated. Unless someone is a relentless threat otherwise, I can't see a situation where beating them up is appropriate.

.

We can talk about people threatening or otherwise our family or friends all day, but until that moment comes, those words are meaningless. It's an extremely hypothetical situation.

I'd glady beat the fucking shit out of the bastard of a taxman who is currently two months into an audit of my financial affairs dating back six years.

How I haven't clocked him already is beyond me. At the very least I'll discreetly wait for him after work some day, identify his car and key the whole thing down the side when its over.

Touching the air conditioning controls at the office is enough reason to send somebody to the hospital

Now we have real reasons.

People who don't replace dead batteries in remote controls.
People who talk during a movie.
People who eat with their mouth open.

Dead

"Beating someone up" to me implies it's not a fair fight--like a bully beating up a smaller, weaker victim--plus it sounds like something a kid would say.

Yes there are good reasons to fight someone, mainly to protect/defend yourself or others.

Only in self defense or in defense of another.

Pretty much this. The only time I could think of having a good reason to beat someone up is if I need to physically stop them from doing something to myself or someone else.

That said, if we all operated on good reasons, myself included, the world would be a much different place.

Without doing anything physical to me or anyone else? Hmm...

If I caught someone trying to break into my house I would have to go bonkers on them since I have a wife and kids inside.

I think it kind of ruins the entire idea of the thread.

perhaps we should fight. my old lady against yours.

i think a lot of big problems in history could have been solved if someone beat up the right person and just asked "what the h are you thinking"

Maybe if you're face to face with the CEO of your company and he's telling yiu he just sold everybody's jobs out to India*.

*Note: Don't direct your anger at the replacements. They're just trying to make a living, same as you.
*Note 2: Board members are fair game, too.
*Note 3: This has just hypothetical fantasy.Neither I, nor anyone I know has lost jobs to foreign workers. Please don't do this if you don't like jail.

Nope.

If I'm going to get arrested for beating the shit out of somebody I don't want the reason simply being because the were talking shit to me or somebody I know. Oh and dudes who go to jail defending their girl's honor cause another guy said something cross toward them are some of the dumbest mofos around.

It's not OK to start punching people because they said hurtful words to you, you psychos. Come on.

If they're actually attacking you physically, or your loved ones, then go for it, but if you escalate the situation from words to fists then you are the asshole 100% of the time.

I feel like that would be considered self defense as there's reason to believe that person is a physical threat (stealing something is physical). So may or may not count with the rules of the OP.

Hah

I'm reading this thread like "wtf, did nobody read my OP?"

The only good reason to violently attack someone is to prevent ongoing/imminent violence.

Even then, I'd be unlikely to do so unless said violence was directed at me or my loved ones/friends. I wouldn't engage in a street brawl or anything like that involving entirely strangers, especially if there was even a chance someone was carrying a more deadly weapon.

edit: to answer OP's question: no. There's no excuse for "beating someone up" short of actual physical danger being posed by them.

Being a corrupt politician or other public servant such as police officer.

Shitty business man/woman who lays off workers so they can increase their profit margins

Sometimes people need a good ass kicking to teach them a lesson.

Worst beating I ever saw a guy take was at a party where he slapped a chick... well her brother was at the party too and he didn't take kindly to someone roughing up his sister.

After the beating he took, and the subsequent hospital visit I'm sure he thinks twice before getting physical with women now.

Call my wife/daughter a nigger in front of me will immediately result in a violent reaction.

Or spitting. Give me spit I'll split dat lip.

Break into my home? I will not give an intruder the benefit of the doubt. I will defend my family's gift of life by any means legally necessary.

Sexually assault my family? I'm going to prison.

The first one, for sure. Power hungry turds of ignorance and malicious intent. The second one, I want to say yes but that's just the nature of business and general humanity. So I'd have to think on it case by case.

Generally, only violence against those have criminally wronged you. Then again, we aren't supposed to be seeking revenge since it almost always only helps us emotionally (maybe) and doesn't actually help a situation, but may actually make things worse. Escalations and such.

Tax evasion, embezzlement, theft, fraud, defamation, financial/emotional harm upon family.

I kind of like this answer, though it depends on the circumstances. Also, hurting or harassing a close family member or friend, especially one who can't defend him or herself. I'm not a violent man but mess with my nephew and see what happens.*

* One of us is going to the hospital, and there is a distinct possibility it's me. *scowl*

Or the guy could have pressed charges and came out on top. Provided no foul play was going on, he would have won that case if the retaliation he got from a slap resulted in a hospital visit.

Self-defense is the biggy.

Like, if someone tried to lay a hand on my child I'd snap their arms, so I guess there's that too. Probably some other things too.
