Jack Thompson Is Doomed (Let's Point And Laugh)

Eurogamer got it wrong. The NIMF, unlike Jack Thompson, is not in favor of banning or censoring products inappropriate for children. Rather, it informs parents on what it thinks is appropriate for kids and pressures the media not to market what it considers child-unfriendly products to children.

I wonder how long it will take before this guy gets sued for slander and/or libel.
Won't happen. Thompson is careful about whom he directs his attacks at. Unless it involves government figures, whom you can say just about anything about without fear of losing a defamation suit (at least in the United States), he specifically mentions large groups and not individuals. ("HOnestly, are all of you gamers on drugs, or what?")

Then all of us gamers should sue him! :D

But to be honest, this guy should not be taken serious anymore. Ok, then why react to this topic, well, cause it's fun. He keeps digging his own grave, and like the most of you said, he will wind up to be the joke of the media (at least the gaming media). It's guys like that who give us gamers a bad name, since there are people out there who actually believe the shit that's coming out of his mouth.

Luckily, I'm not a resident of the USA, and over here we really don't have to deal with people like him. From my point of view, he just loves the attention he's getting. Things were dying down a little, so out comes this sick and twisted idea (I mean, killing a family, piss on them for nothing? There's a reason why Thrill Kill never came out mind you) and 'hello' media attention. He just craves for it, he needs to be in the spotlight, like some of you said. Don't pay any attention to him, ever again.

Someone should hack together a quick text adventure, sell it on the internet, and demand $10,000 for Penny Arcade's Childs' Play... or something equally amusing.

(Note: I think games ARE often stupidly over violent and that a few are just plain trash in a box, but I do find the text adventure concept amusing.)

someone has already done a text adventure - its available to buy online for $0.50

I'll see if i can find the link..

edit - here ya go! Osaki

Bah. They should make it with a real text adventure engine/interpreter, like Inform!

Ok here's Thompson's response to getting bitch slapped from a gamespot article:

Thompson, who has in the past made headlines for comparing Entertainment Software Association Douglas Lowenstein to Adolf Hitler, responded to Walsh's letter Friday in a letter sent to GameSpot, among others.

"Dr. Walsh's efforts are funded by Target and by a foundation run by Best Buy lawyer and Best Buy Director Elliot Kaplan," Thompson wrote, later adding, "I am suing Target and Best Buy over the Bully game, which both Target and Best Buy are pre-selling. You connect the dots."

Thompson also denied ever claiming that Walsh or the NIMF supported his actions. "The fact is, I have never suggested that Dr. Walsh approves of what I do," Thompson wrote. "I have countless times told people that I believe he is an expert about the dangers of video games. The mistake I made, apparently naively, is in thinking that a person of his expertise would use it actually to help some bereaved families rather than choose to protect his relationship with portions of the video game industry and its reckless retail network."

Walsh's decision to air his grievances in an open letter that was also sent to Kaplan, Target chairman Robert Ulrich, and Lowenstein drew particular criticism from Thompson.

I am a Christian. As far as I know, Dr. Walsh is as well," Thompson wrote. "There is a very clear passage in the New Testament in which believers are admonished that if they have a problem with someone, to go to that person in private and try and work it out. He didn't do that. He did not want to do that. What he wanted to do, it seems is ingratiate himself with some of the folks that fund his organization, so that he will continue to be considered 'a responsible critic'--one who can be counted upon not to go too far with his criticism."

In closing, Thompson again lamented Walsh's actions. "A child psychologist who would give a heads up to Doug Lowenstein in such a matter without confronting me directly man-to-man is a person who has lost his way, in more ways than one. He is the latest casualty in an escalating war started by a reckless industry whose socipathic [sic] poster child is [Take-Two Interactive president] Paul Eibeler. Dr. Walsh has now cast his [lot] and his efforts, whether wittingly or unwittingly, with him."

And the followup....

Jack Thompson Reaches Out to Sen. Lieberman Over NIMF Slap

Dear Senator Lieberman:

I received late last Thursday a remarkably false and hurtful letter from someone who is a friend of yours and who used to be a friend of mine, Dr. David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family. Two people who got Walsh's letter are you and Doug Lowenstein of the ESA. Therein is the explanation of why it was really sent.

I have over the years repeatedly told Dr. Walsh of my admiration for his knowledge as to the harm caused by mature video games sold to minors. I have done nothing for years but praise him to others, especially those in the media. Dr. Walsh has gotten himself on plenty of prominent news shows about this issue on his own, but I got him on 60 Minutes this year and in Reader's Digest. Dave indicated that he was pleased that I did. Neither of us seeks the publicity for its own sake. We both care about the message. It will save lives.

The three of us, obviously, have shared this same concern about adult games sold to kids for a very long time. When you meet the bereaved families of these victims, they change your life forever, as did the families in Paducah whom I represented. Critics of the three of us don't understand our concern. They haven't met the victims.

The very day I sent Dave a draft of an affidavit for him to sign for our wrongful death case in Alabama, Dave, instead of calling me wrote this letter saying that I needed to stop suggesting publicly and otherwise that he endorses what I do. I have NEVER suggested such a thing, ever. Dave and I have joked about how he is the "good cop" on this issue, and I am the "bad cop."

But if Dave had a problem with my "tactics," I believe you and I both know, as people of faith, that the Biblical principle is that you go privately to the person with whom you have a disagreement and express the concern. Dave NEVER did that. Why?

You see, Senator, I am presently suing Best Buy and Target over Take-Two's planned release of Bully, a Columbine simulator in which you can bludgeon your classmates and teachers. I was on ABC World News Tonight and CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight about Bully and my lawsuit against these retailers. The stakes here are very high.

Dave's organization is funded by Target and Best Buy. Elliot Kaplan is a lawyer who defended Best Buy the last time I sued it successfully, and it is his foundation that, in Kaplan's words "has given millions of dollars to Dave Walsh." Kaplan is a director on the Board of Best Buy. You and I both learned to "follow the money" a long time ago. It can explain why friends write letters that have absolutely no basis in fact but which help those who fund them. Why else would Dave tell me publicly to stop doing something he could have asked me to do privately and which I have never done?

Dave copied you with that letter. He did that because he knew of my relationship with your office, how I have sat with your people the day we were both interviewed for Spencer Halpin's Moral Kombat documentary that is coming out this fall. I am deeply appreciative of your Chief of Staff's tremendous concern and interest in this issue. I have a lovely letter from you thanking me for my abiding involvement in this issue. Nobody here is saying you endorse my methods. You appreciate my concern.

Why did Dave Walsh send his letter to Doug Lowenstein - to make sure that it would be spread all over the world. That is precisely what has happened. You should hear the things Dave has said to me about Doug, about his prevarications. I think Doug is a liar. Dave is too nice a guy to say so publicly, but I am not. Doug Lowenstein, in my opinion, is personally responsible for a number of deaths. He is paid well to spin like the worst propagandists in history. I don't need to tell you the harm that propagandists can cause, the lives they can cost. The Third Reich was founded upon propaganda as surely as it was founded upon armaments. When Doug Lowenstein says the industry wants kids not to buy these games, he is lying. When he says there is no proof that these games hurt kids, he is lying. Dave would not say so. I say so. I'm not nice, and I don't pretend to be.

The reason Dave sent that letter is the same reason the Philadelphia law firm of Blank Rome has embarked on character assassination of me in our case in Alabama arising out of Take-Two's GTA games. Blank Rome has as one of its partners Barbara Comstock, the head of "opposition research" at the RNC. Blank Rome has unethically used her RNC techniques on me because they know they can't win this case, covered on 60 Minutes and in Reader's Digest on the merits, so they have cranked up their Swift Boat Vets approach and used it on me, with no facts to back them up. As Twain said, "A lie is half way around the world before the truth puts on its shoes." Dave Walsh's money people took a page out of the Blank Rome/RNC playbook. I am getting used to it. All it has accomplished is make me more determined to destroy the Take-Two's of the world, by God's grace.

Dave Walsh is a very nice man who blew this one. I happen to think there is room in the world for Dave's approach on games, but I also think somebody has to be willing to get in the trenches and slug it out with sociopaths. Take-Two's Mr. Houser proves in today's New York Times he is just such a sociopath.

With all respect, Dave's Annual Video Game Report Card has not slowed down Take-Two, has it? I have used lawsuits in the past to accomplish some very good things. I made enemies in the process. I am proud to count Doug Lowenstein as one of them.

I wish you all of God's best. I wish people like Take-Two all of Satan's worst. Dave Walsh would not say that, and that is part of his charm. Some of us were not called to be charming. I want to win this thing, not for my sake, but because lives are at stake.

That is what makes what Dave did so hurtful. Instead of calling me up and talking to me man to man, he wrote a letter to Doug Lowenstein.

Wow.. this guy is mentally unstable. Why does he now all of the sudden have issues with Dr. Walsh funding? That funding didn't just suddenly appear just for Walsh commented on his lack of involvement with Thompson...

Somehow I don't think wishing someone all of Satan's worst is very christian-like....

Surely this guy is just joking at this point, right? This is just his Internet Persona?

I hope he can prove this, because i'd suspect a large counter suit will be coming his way.

Bully is a bully simulator according to Thompson right? except it isn't from what i've heard. It sounds like a modern day version of the Spectrum classic Skool Daze.

What exactly is he suing best buy/target under though?
If the game is AO or whatever rating it has, then as long as they stick to that rule, what the HELL can he do??

As some of you may remember the great, and perhaps at times slightly out of control Jack Thompson issued an open letter to the videogames industry in which he outlined his idea for a game where the CEO of fictional company Take This, Paula Eibel, is murdered along with her husband and children. He proposed that if any developer agreed to make the game, Thompson will donate $10,000 to the charity of choice of Paul Eibeler, the CEO of Take Two. Well it seem that a team of GTA modders called the Fighting Hellfish has stepped up to the plate and created a San Andreas mod for the PC. Which is slighly based upon the blueprint devised from the mind of Jack Thompson. If you want to download the mod feel free to visit Defamation of Character: A Jack Thompson Murder Simulator and download it to your computer. The site describes the mod as:

A JOURNEY INTO THE MIND OF AN ATTORNEY

Mild mannered Christian attorney by day, Jack Thompson moonlights as Banman, a homicidal hero who cuts through immorality and beauracratic laws with an automatic rifle. Utilizing his Schwarzenegger sized personal arsenal and his trusty Bannedwagon, Banman fights the evil videogame industry's dirty tactics. From destroying trucks to make sure the children are kept safe from violent games, to fighting off an armed rebellion of lesbians, feminists, and female golfers led by General Janet Reno, Banman puts it all on the line to protect the homeland.

Jack Thompson meanwhile sets himself hard to work at protecting the youth through the power of the lawsuit, finally going after those evil Super Mario Bros. But looming on the horizon lies a dangerous killer, whom Jack is stereotypically positive trained on Halo and GTA. Will Jack be able to save the youth of America while also having to fend off the maniacal machinations of Doug Lowenstein, and the combined might of the ESA, hackers, and Electronic Arts, all while making it to his press conference on time?

When is a guy supposed to have time for a shower?

Game Features
- Experience an all new mind bending story in the GTA San Andreas engine, told through original levels and cutscenes.
- Chase a few ambulances, hold a press conference, or cruise for information as attorney Jack Thompson.
- Use superpowers like bullet time and regenerating armor to battle it out with Jack's long time personal nemeses Janet Reno and Doug Lowenstein.
- Learn more about Jack through in game dialogue full of real Jack Thompson quotes.
- Piss off a real asshole by having a hearty laugh at his expense.

But of course the excitemnt does not end there not only is Mr Thompson unsatisfied with the mod, he claims his earlier proposal was merely intended as satire, to “highlight the patent hypocrisy and recklessness exhibited by the video game industry’s willingness to target cops, women, homosexuals, and other groups with some of their violent games.” He then proceeds to ridicule gamers and the “video game community” for their lack of insight into his keen wit.

...and the hole is now getting deeper, keeping going Jack!

:lol :lol
