Her video straight up says she doesnt believe they are making hardware, as in anything. The Ally Xbox is not an Xbox console, its a Handheld PC with an Xbox front end, MS isnt making it, its a third party piece of hardware......if all the nextgen machine are third party hardware then indeed Xbox has left the hardware game.

If the next "Xbox Console" is a console with bespoke silicon that can run x86 games and Xbox xex games even through a VM layer then is it not a console?

If its cheaper than a comparable PC and can run BC games + Steam/GOG/EGS games with a console-esc front end thats a pretty compelling deal.
But yes I do agree it would be a pretty niche piece of kit, would probably sell less than the Series X.

The thing is, it's hard to trust Microsoft. Handheld PCs also need SoCs, and yes, they might make a next-gen Xbox—but it likely won't be a mass-market product this time. They probably won't subsidize the console like before, especially since they're losing money on Game Pass and barely selling games anymore.


With SteamOS expanding to more devices, I think Microsoft will finally optimize Windows for gaming. The hardware they're developing with AMD might be a new SoC or GPU that enables console-level gaming on Windows—or they could go in a completely different direction.


The Series consoles already had a hard time competing with the PS5. Now imagine a new Xbox entering a market where every Xbox game is also available on PlayStation—and the Xbox is potentially more expensive. That's a tough sell.

Should also be pointed out that she never said MS is going to stop making hardware. Folks are being a bit too literal with her words. Xbox is obviously not "dead". Xbox consoles are being sold as we speak. Is Xbox dead as far as being a viable product for Microsoft? Plenty of folks believe that.

Laura Fyer didn't claim that a new console isn't in the pipeline.

She just said that in her opinion the hardware path they have taken will not work out and that this is pretty much the beginning of the end.

You don't need a manager to realize that. The strategy is silly, far too inconsistent, has no marketing approach (0,0 customer centricity) and will be the end of Xbox hardware.
In the end, there will be no one left to buy the thing. It doesn't need Nintendo or Sony or any console war.

Xbox is in full seppuku mode. Terrible management and legendary brand destruction. At least it's a nice case to show students how product and marketing is not to be handled in any way.
This goes against everything you learn in marketing, sales or anywhere else.

It is simply a matter of sanity that you don't do a 180° turn every six months and mess with your fan base.

It's crazy how big Jez is. I knew he wasn't skinny but this is fatter than I even though he was. Also love that he went to this big press event and couldn't even bother to dress with clothes that fit him properly. The shoulder seam on his shirt is halfway down his arm.

Microsoft cares nothing for him.

The last time he was militant about something was Xbox going 3rd party, and look how that turned out.
 
I have looked at the photos of and comments from Jez in this thread and now I am sad for him.

As a Sony and Nintendo fanunit myself, I can't help but imagine if the positions were swapped. If Xbox was kicking ass without even releasing many games and Sony was getting hated on like Xbox is now. I would be sad and withdraw from the social aspects of the hobby. Jez can't because this is his job. Such a sad state of affairs for young Jez.

- There is no exclusives or any reason to get it, when you can just use a PC
- Playstation is getting their games also

What Fryer said was just a consolidation of what everyone knows, Xbox is dead.

A pretty compelling deal that would be the complete end of Xbox as a brand because the product you're describing is just a better SteamMachine that happens to have an Xbox logo stuck on it.

No one would purchase anything from the Xbox/Microsoft Store on that device. They'd be selling a box that guarantees everyone buys Microsoft games from Steam, GoG, EGS, or Humble where Microsoft would only get a limited cut of each sale. Not seeing how that would be any more sustainable than their current situation.
