EXCLUSIVE: Johnny Depp is joining the cast of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, playing a co-starring role in the sequel which David Yates will direct early next year with Eddie Redmayne again in the lead role of Newt Scamander. I’ve confirmed this, but no one is saying exactly what role that Depp will play. But I believe that if you look carefully, you might spot him in a tiny turn in the first installment of the J.K. Rowling-created Harry Potter spinoff, which Warner Bros opens November 18. We’ll just have to wait and see how Depp complements the adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards, 70 years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.

He's gonna be young Dumbledore, isn't he?

I mean this will be the American actors version of what the original series was right? Waiting for Robert DeNiro in part 4.

I came to have a really negative view of Depp until I revisited the Pirates of the Caribbean series. He's so good in those. He chooses such terrible projects most of the time, though.

So you're telling me there is a chance Yates can fall out and Tim Burton could helm the picture?

I would be more open to that even with Burtons shit track record this century

This is dope man. Depp brings some charisma in that seems desperately needed going by these trailers imo

And Colin Farrell as a recurring villain could be promising too

I gotta remember to do my marathon of the Potter films before this comes out. Been meaning to do it this summer but kept putting it off. Or at least pick out my favorites if I'm sort on time to refresh myself on the feel of the world.

This news though is very interesting. I like Depp as an actor but I do have concerns he plays characters that are to similar lately though. I hope that doesn't happen here.

I'm... not to enthusiastic about Depp.

The last half-decent movie I saw him in was Sweeney Todd and even then he was kinda wooden. I don't think he'd make a good young Dumbledore... or a young anyone, really. I hope he's some new character where it doesn't particularly matter how he phones in the part.

He was good in black mass and public enemies

Hell if it wasn't for Joel Edgerton he would have been the best thing about black mass which boasted a pretty decent ensemble

I'm just glad its not Cumberbatch or Hiddleston. Don't think I could fuck with a movie that included either of them and redmayne. Too much bland poshness.

Dumbledore is about 150 in the potter movies, which take place in the nineties. It's okay for an old person to play "young" dumbledore.

According to rumors
that's Colin Farrell's character

Is my mental timeline off or are those actors too old to be playing the rumored characters during the Fantastic Beasts era?

Since I haven't followed Fantastic Beasts too closely and my knowledge of the books is certainly faulty, I'd bet against myself. Still, that strikes me as odd and older than I was hoping.

Yep. Depp does still seem a bit too old for the role IIRC the timeframe correctly, but perhaps not.

I could see him channeling Michael Gambon's Dumbledore in aesthetic.. not sure about performance atm.

It's been a bit since I read Deathly Hallows, but I also thought they would be a pinch younger during this era.

Dumbledore was born in 1881.

This movie takes place in the 20s.

Depp's age shouldn't be a problem if he is playing him.

I always thought he would've fit in well in the original films. I honestly thought it was odd to see Helena Bonham Carter in a movie without him lol.

I think the issue is that if Dumbledore died unnaturally at 115 years old and acted and looked more like someone in their 80s at that age (at least, based on how I see people age), that means I imagine he also stayed in his earlier adult years for longer. As a result, I expect a 40ish-year-old Dumbledore to be more like someone in their late 20s or early 30s. Given that Depp is currently 53, he feels like more aged and wise than I would expect for him. But maybe I have Dumbledore's aging all wrong.

I think, regardless of age, Depp could be a good casting for him and for portraying certain aspects of his character, but he is not who I would have imagined or hoped for. However, if Rowling approves it, then I'll accept her opinion over mine.

I hope they stick mostly to America, I doubt they could fully exhaust the possibilities of magical America in one movie.
