The post contains speculation based upon alleged leaked SPOILERS

I think I figured it out:

Depp is Grindlewald, but so is Colin Farrell. The character Farrell is playing is simply Grindlewald disguised via Polyjuice and Depp is his real form.

Bit of a bummer though, as
I would have loved to see Colin Farrell as a reoccurring villain/Grindlewald in the films.

Oh man this is awful.

Is this in the time where Dumbledore fought Grindelwald? Will we actually get to see the fight? Would be awesome!

This movie takes place in the mid 1920s. Dumbledore would be the Hogwarts Transfiguration Teacher at this time, and in his 40s. Voldemort would have only just been born. 20 something years would have passed since Dumbledore and Grindlewald met. Grindlewald should already have the Elder Wand.

Dumbledore's duel with Grindlewald didn't happen until 1945. So unless this series is going to cover 20 years, probably not.

But it seems they're already retconning Grindlewald's story, having him active in America, rather than pretty much confined to eastern Europe.

I wasn't super bothered about seeing this in the cinema, but I saw the last trailer in IMAX and damn it got me in the mood. Something I loved about the Harry Potter movies were the aesthetic and world design, particularly Prisoner of Azkaban the movies afterwards, and seeing the trailer on a big screen was a nice return, also the rumoured spoilers were pretty interesting. I think the movie will be huge as nostalgia and word of mouth will go pretty far I suspect.

As far as I'm aware, there's really nothing canon-wise that says he was only active in Eastern Europe. It's also possible he tries to push into America and fails. As for the Elder Wand, he could still have it in this movie.

I like how what gets me more hyped for this movie is a possible Dumbledore or Grindelwald appearance than the actual premise of this movie.

I've seen it so huge spoiler.
He's not. Colin Farrell is Grindelwald

This makes me happy, but
then who in the world is Depp and why do most movie news sites have sources saying he's Grindelwald? My only theory is Farrel is Grindelwald disguised with Polyjuice, and Depp is his real form. Did Depp appear in the cut of the film you saw?

Depp did not appear from what I remember. If he's in the movie it could be a reshoot cameo. You don't know Farrell is Grindelwald until the final battle scene. That said, I had my suspicions because he plays really gay against Ezra Miller, in a creepy way.

Is the movie good?

It was OK. I thought the movie needed some cuts to tighten the story. Performances are good all around and it's super interesting to see a fully functional adult wizard society, much more than the snippets we saw in the HP movies.

Yates has been the worst director. The last few movies trash that took all the magic out of the world. Already a sequel too.

Hmm. Not too thrilled about this. I haven't really enjoyed a Depp performance for a while. Really looking forward to watching the first film though.
