Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Saw Need for Speed U for cheap on Amazon.

Then I found out it doesn't have local multiplayer.

Still might buy it...but I'm really annoyed about that.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted U though has better textures than either of the other two HD console versions, basically the same as playing it on a PC. EA did a good job making it before they abandoned the Wii U. :(

When is Smash coming out? My friends asked for Wii party nights when they found out I bought a Wii U. :)

smash is probably 2014. U til then consider
Nintendoland and wii party u
Both games are excellent examples of assymetric gameplay as well. Wii paty u also is excellent to play while watching something else on tv (tabletop mini games and such)

Great minds think alike :)
How much did you pay?

Came out to $130 after tax and everything. Felt kind of harsh considering I mostly buy games during Gamefly sales for around $10 a piece. Rather curious to see how well all three retain their value in the long run. I remember still being able to sell a scratched to hell players choice copy of Wind Waker on Gamecube last year for $30ish.

Even if you don't think Wonderful 101 is super amazing at first... beat the game. Then, you will understand.

Beat it at super easy just to see the ending. Then come back for further refinements and super platinums. Seriously its like dmc and bayonetta with probably twice as much content.

Are all games playable on the gamepad?
If so then damn, that's amazing.

My Wii U is 2 days old.. don't really know the capabilities yet. In my experience with some games (Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3), it required me to use both the monitor and the gamepad for additional stuff. I was actually stuck on a level in Wonderful 101 until I realized I should be looking at the gamepad. :/

W101 lets you switch displays with the - button. There is an option that shows a split screen on game pad only which lets you play those sections

Yes.

I heard wii mote is heavily recommended for pikmin
Any truth to that?

Best set up is wiimote+ nunchuck+ gamepad. you directly control your guy with pointer and nunchuck and with the gamepad you have a real time map plus a secondary input for your other guys.
I reignited my Gamefly subscription because I realized if I wanted to enjoy all the games the 3DS and Wii U have to offer, I would be dead broke.

I put in all the games I want to own/try for the 3DS and Wii U since their launch (and that I don't already have - like NSMBU for example) and my list is 27 games long. 3 more than that by years end (Zelda, Mario, and Mario Party), then DK and Bravely Default in February next year.

I began to realize....I really didn't need to own any other system than a Wii U and a 3DS. Each has way more games than I could ever play and enjoy as it is.

Heck, I still have 5 Wii Games (Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Xenoblade Chronicles, Skyward Sword) and 5 Nintendo DS games (Apollo Justice, Professor Layton 1-4) yet to beat and that is previous gen backlog.

those kind of games should be great on wiiu, especially since you can play off tv too.
Right, not all games. But most games. The gamepad isn't exactly portable, though. It might work a short distance into the next room, but not farther than that.

You can take the wiiu itself everywhere though.

Btw there are some games that dont support off tv only due to double screen usage (zombiu, lego city undercover, nintendoland) all other games use off tv play (monster hunter is especially amazing with it)

It's great to read such enthusiastics comments about WiiU, welcome aboard guys !!
I'm the happy owner of my beloved WiiU since Day 1, we've been through hurdles, a dramatic game's drought but now, it's all about love !

I've played a lot of WiiU games and most were great, fun games, Good ports with a great use of the Gamepad, or totally new experiences.

My favourites are :

Nintendoland
ZombiU
Pikmin 3
The Wonderful 101
WiiPartyU
WindWakerHD
Sonic Lost World
AC3
COD:Ghosts
WiiSports : Tennis

Eshop titles :

Trine2
Little Inferno
Nano Assault Neo
Mighty Switch Force HD

WIIFITU is a must have if you're just a bit interested in Fitness or having fun with motion controls.
The game is packed up with content, The Fitmeter is fun, the Miror mode using the gamepad camera is great.

I also strongly encourage you to try some of the apps available on the eshop :

ART ACADEMY is pretty well made, you can have a relaxing time with it and the community is particularly active.

PANORAMA VIEWS are fun, the London Bus or the Tour in kyoto are the best ones imo. The video quality is certainly not the best, but it's a fun experience and a great show off for your friends and family.

WiiKARAOKEU is amazing if you're into singing, its like a real karaoke machine.

GOOGLESTREETU is the ultimate google map machine. Have a walk wherevere you want and enjoy the view.

In a year of cynicism, what a genuinely pleasant thread about videogames.

Thinking about it, that's what Sega and Nintendo were/are great at: that honest, feel good vibe. For all the hours I've put into my 360 I have no emotional affinity to it. Yet I still adore my GameCube. And that old Wii menu screen music. Used let it run whilst I was in bed.

Waiting a year for a console is evidently - and I do mean evidently - the sensible option. No early teething issues to mar your experience with the system and infrastructure. Looking at what Nintendo is bringing out, the first part stuff on Wii U and 3DS is unquestionably strong. And again, with that feel good vibe.

If the U is like the successor to the GameCube then I may need to get involved. I still believe the Gamepad is a gimmick (off TV play aside which is ace and the true, unadvertised reason for its existence) but I'm warming to the system. Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, VC SNES classics I never played. Lots there and always to that high standard.

Anyway, enjoy and maybe I'll join in the Eastern fun soon too.

Have been considering a Wii U recently, but have a question.

I know it can play Wii games, but to, say play Skyward Sword on a Wii U, will I need a Wii controller and that silly add-on along with it, or can you use the gamepad somehow?

You need a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. All Wii remotes have motion plus built in now though so you don't need to worry about that.

Yeah you do need Wii controllers to play all Wii games. So in case of Skyward Sword you need Wiimote+ and Nunchuk.

You can't use GamePad to control the games but you can play projecting the footage to GamePad screen.

Do it. The only good game that EA released on the system. Enjoyed the singleplayer a lot.

Hmmm...nkind of a bummer no one mentions the U version of Tekken TT 2. Such a fun game with some Nintendo exclusive extras.

Man this thread is getting me so excited about buying the Wii U. I've decided to go ahead with Target for the $25 gift card, and 5% off using the red card there. I'll then use the gift card towards SM3DW and also get WWHD.

Quick question. Can the Wii U use the same sensor bar as the Wii? I'd still like to keep my Wii connected so I can play GC games once in a while, and I don't really want two sensor bars taking up space.

Yeah, you'd have to unplug it and switch consoles, but you can use the same actual bar.

I've just put mine on top of each other with a little bit of blutack.

I don't know where else to ask this, but can I plug in a pro controller to my mac and play emulators with it? I can do that with the ds3 and my mac automatically recognizes it. Just want to make sure before I buy one.

I have both my Wii and Wii U connected for the same reason, to still play GC games, and unfortunately, you have to have both sensor bars set up. I have my Wii U sensor bar on the top of my TV and the Wii sensor bar on the bottom. Both work fine.

New Wii U owners, you can't go wrong with Trine 2. Off TV play feels fantastic, and the touch screen really makes it the best playing version of the game in my opinion.

No longer do you have to draw boxes awkwardly with the right stick, or drag them around slowly. Now you can just draw it on the touch screen, and manipulate the objects directly. It feels way, way better.

It was on sale last week for $8, so if it's still on sale, I'd recommend it. It comes with the extra content that was in the director's cut on PC, supposedly.

I only payed 71 dollars. Why didnt you use coupon?

How is Wii Party U compared to the Mario Party games? Nintendoland was not a big hit with my family(shame since I loved it), so I haven't been able to play multiplayer with them at all on this console. The only games they used to play with me were Mario Party and Mario Kart, so I'm hoping maybe this game has a similar level of accessibility while still being fun.

Thanks for the responses. I don't think I'll be playing GC games all too much, so I guess I can just put it behind the Wii until I need to use it.

its a good board game if thats the question. its definately better than mario party 8 and imho better than mario party 9 it has very good minigames and a plethora of modes. also it has some additional stuff that is neat (table top games).

but the biggest advantage is. its cheap as it comes with one wiimote extra.

check out the wii party u thread.

I've just bitten and ordered the Mario + Luigi premium pack from GAME but it also comes with download codes for Wii Sports Tennis and Bowling too.

Also ordered WW and 3d world. Even though I've played WW several times the WiiU screenshots have made me want to experience it again. That and 3d world have, to me, made the machine worth a purchase. I was always going to get one to compliment my PS4 but originally I was going to hold off until Mario Kart released next year.

Now I've just got to find the time to play everything...

get pikmin 3, w101 and rayman legends.

you should be able to get those games pretty cheaply by now.

Great choices all around! WW HD is so worth it. It took about an hour before it fully hit me just how much better it looks. Once you see the little details, the lighting, all of it - you'll be insanely excited for the graphical possibilities of Zelda Wii U.

The game is a fantastic example of using the gamepad too, in really subtle, but undeniably great ways.

* Off TV Play (hit the select button)
* Map on screen at all times. There is no better game for this. Sailing is so much faster, dungeons are faster. It actually makes a much bigger difference than you would expect. No more hitting pause every time. Other things are nice, like fast item switching. Also whenever you pull up your wind waker, it shows all the songs you know displayed on the gamepad. All these little things are actually really great, and you don't notice it until they all add up to make the experience more fluid and enjoyable.
* MiiVerse integration makes a single player game feel social, and feel alive. You find bottles from other players, notes and pictures everywhere. It really is more fun than I had any right to expect.
* Gyroscope. Aim with the bow with the right stick for the broad aiming, then do the last bit of fine tuning with the gyroscope. It's soooooooooo much faster and more accurate once you get used to it. I dominated all the mini-games with shooting involved, and it feels so much better.

Noticed that on their advert on TV the other day. It's a great bundle for £219.99. If anyone in the UK is tempted, I'd recommend it

Anyone know where i can get a good deal on wiimotes and/or gamecube controllers?

Gamecube controllers won't work on Wii U.

You need a Wiimote (with motion plus) + nunchuck. The only other thing is a Wii pro controller, which is optional. You don't need that.

If you really never played any Wii games, it's worth it. You'll need Wiimote to play Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and Zelda Skyward Sword. I'd also really recommend getting Wii sports resort. It's by far the best Wii sports game.

As others have said, you can't beat the free Wiimote packed in with Wii Party U now.

I guess there's also a controller packed in with Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.

I don't know if those bundles include a nunchuck, which is kind of bullshit. Luckily, they're only a couple bucks ... you'll need one. Can probably find them cheaper than this even.

Wii Party U has some very interesting ideas by the way. I definitely recommend it if you're into games like that.

I want to get it, but I don't need the controller. And I would be playing it single player primarily. Hopefully they have a different bundle soon.

Quick question.

Are there or will there be any available Mario/Luigi nunchucks?
I bought a Mario and Luigi Wiimote but they look off when white nunchucks are attached.

I bet they will eventually sell it sepately like with original Wii Party. I'm just not sure if I would recommend it for single player. I haven't tried but I don't imagine that it would be that fun.

I don't think so. You might find red and green nunchuks though if you look hard enough. I don't think there are official nunchuks in other colours than white and black.

Best bet is a black nunchuck. Colors would match a bit better I think.

I wouldn't expect a nunchuck, but you never know. I think it's a long shot though.

Can you adjust the button layout with the purchased game? My friend has the demo and I played a bit of it and the button layout was all kinds of awkward and unintuitive. I couldn't find a way to change it in the demo but, like I said, I just played it briefly.

Is there any way to use the Wii Classic Controller for VC games or other games that support it? Or am I better off just buying a Wii U Pro controller?

I'm pretty sure there was a red nunchuk in Japan.

Also you can get dark blue nunchuks - not sure if official or not - which would work as a continuation of the overalls I guess.

I went ahead and bit the bullet yesterday too. Been eyeing the Wii U for a long time, and now seemed like a good time with no big sales for BF and a more urgent need for off TV play happening soon.

Plan to pick up the 3d Mario and WW at the least, and really want to try out Pikmin and W101 when I can. Will probably also pick up ZU used, since it's $ 9.99 at gamestop on Black Friday.

Got the NSMB/NLB bundle for $ 299, feeling good about it so far -- other than the initial updating. I wanted to use it as a TV box as well, so it took a while to update all the software. I was also disappointed that you need 2 wii motes/pro controllers to play multi in NSMB. I thought it would be possible with the pro controller and 1 wii-mote (which is all I saved from my Wii).

On the plus side, the game is fantastic. It really feels like they didn't pull any punches and made everything more challenging -- even died a couple of times in World 1. Looks like plenty of meat to the game, and I'm happy with that. Also, being the "booster" in multi is more fun than I thought it would be.

Edit: Typo.

I just bought a Wii Mini that came with a Red Wiimote and a Red Nunchuk, but as far as I know they aren't available to buy separately. The Wii Mini is so cheap though, it might be worth it to buy just to get the Red Nunchuk/Wiimote.

im kinda considering wii mini as a collectors thing.

unlike many people here i think it looks pretty good.
