Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Yep, Zombi U is awesome. It was the 1st game in a long time that made me tension. I don;t know what the hell IGN was thinking with their review.

Great game in which you have to be careful and proceed cautiously (like you should if a zombie could be around the corner)

The game still ended up ranking higher than launch
exclusives like RYSE or KillZone; SF.

The eShop is not notorious for never reducing prices. At least not in Europe. Though you'll likely always get better deals on physical games, regardless of platform. Note that of those 32gigs, you only have about 25-26 to use for data as the rest is occupied by firmware stuff.

Games cannot be installed from disc.

Don't forget the DDP points you're losing (or "not getting" actually) by not going digital-only, though.

What are DDP points?

Question; I just convinced a co worker to get a Wii U largely in part because he has two young children. If they want to play games like New Super Mario Bros together what extra controllers should he buy?

Jump on this. Great game I didn't finish. I should get back to it some day.

I bought my WiiU today to mainly play ZombiU and the new Mario.

I was about to grab ZombiU off the eShop tonight for full price, glad someone mentioned the black friday deal which made me search for it.

For simplicity and being reasonably priced, I would recommend a pair of wiimotes.

ZombiU's a real treat. It's a game that actually makes you feel like you're playing to survive.

Wimotes (optional + Nun for 3dw) or WiiUPro work for either game. You can even mix and match but their kids will probably fight for the type they believe is the best.

Tell him to get the $13.35 option from Amazon. They're temporarily out of stock, but should ship. Alternatively, Walmart.com has had them for the same price (I think Amazon is price matching them). They're solid 3rd party controllers, and they're obviously a great price.

Also might be worth mentioning that you can get Wii remotes in Wii Party U and Mario & Sonic Olympics for not much more than the cost of the remotes themselves. Both are decent multiplayer games that kids will likely enjoy.

A free one comes with Wii Party U (a great game for families)

You need at least two Wiimotes to play 2-player NSMBU because the GamePad is solely reserved the for assist-block feature in that game. As he'll want to get NintendoLand for the kids as well, Wii Remote Pluses (and Nunchuks) are a smart buy anyway. Recommend him going with the Wii Party U bundle which also gets him a neat party game with a Wiimote+ and/or the NintendoLand + Luigi Wiimote+ bundle that was just announced. Get both and you have two great games and two shiny new Wiimote Pluses while being set for 2 (or 3 if one player uses assist blocks) New Super Mario Bros U (and New Super Luigi U) and 3 player Super Mario 3D World. Make sure to recommend him not cheaping out on the Wiimotes by getting third party ones on eBay. He'll regret that sooner or later.

More and more, I'm interested in picking one up. But I already have a gaming PC, Vita, 3DS, PS4, PS3, and a Wii with not enough time to play games as is. Dilemma.

Oh god that looks horrifying.

In any case he should buy Wiimotes (Plus, even if the regular ones aren't made anymore) that way they can enjoy superb local multiplayer games like Nintendo Land in addition to Mario. In fact you should mention that there is Nintendo Land + Wiimote bundle out any day now. Definitely get that.

How are these? I'm not a fan of the Wii U Pro Controller's quality and layout.

Every review I've read / watched has said they are relatively terrible controllers...... I tend to believe hardware reviews more than software, too. I just got a regular WiiU Pro Controller. It's really something you want if you have a WiiU........I don't mind the layout. I can play no matter where the sticks are, 360 style, ps style, or WiiU style.

Thing is I had one for two weeks at launch. I played Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Sonic Racing with the Pro Controller. It wasn't my cup of tea. The layout works well for the GamePad but some reason it feels much different on the Pro Controller. It was probably the biggest turn off for me.

Hm, ZombiU was 22 here in a retail shop too...Euros that is, took it with me. Looking at the situation, there actually lies some good stuff ahead of me with ZombiU, Mario 3d World, Wind Waker HD, Pikmin3 and later Mario Kart, Bayonetta2.

If this console gets the axe from Nintendo because it doesn't sell, i most likely will have gotten my moneys worth and enjoyment out of it. (i also don't regret buying a Dreamcast back in the day, but let's not hope it will come to that)... i feel like i have to say sorry for my grammar here, don't know if that was correct or nonsene 'will have gotten', not my main language.

Still it's legit bad advice to recommend a Pro Controller of any kind for that situation.

Huh? Why? The guy said his co-worker wanted to play Mario with his kids. Both 2D and 3D Mario can use the Pro controller. And to use a Wiimote with 3D Mario, you'd need a nunchuck for each Wiimote. That gets expensive really quickly. Buy a couple of these Nyko Pros and you're only down $25 or so. Then buy a Wiimote and nunchuck on top of that if you want.

You aren't reading the right reviews. It got 4 out of 5 stars from 27 reviews on Amazon.

Wii Daily liked it: http:// **************/2013/04/nyko-pro-commander-controller-review/ (you'll have to search for this review, NeoGaf apparently doesn't like the link)

Nintendo Feed liked it: http://www.nintendofeed.com/2013/08/hardware-review-nyko-pro-commander.html

Seriously people, I own 4 of these, I'm not leading you astray. Buy it. They're a good, cheap alternative, which is perfect when you need multiple controllers for couch co-op.

Free one also comes with Nintendoland starting Dec 2nd if you buy it separately.

That's a great deal, I'm actually really really satisfied with Nintendo Land and would have been willing to shell out $30-40 for it if it hadn't come free with my system (I don't know if I actually would have, because I wouldn't have had the chance to play it and realize how fun it is).

As it is, I might get Wii Party U basically for the controller and a collection of mini games that might be okay to bust out once in a while but would never consider paying more than $10 for it.

Also, as an aside, I think part of the reason Wii Party sold so well is because Wii remotes were impossible to find at the time. Nintendo probably won't have quite as much success this time around.

Bolded is incorrect. You can use either only Wiimote or Wiimote+Nunchuk. I'm just saying that going down the Pro Controller route locks you out of many great multiplayer games just buying Wiimote would have gotten you. Especially Nintendo Land, Wii Sports Club and Wii Party U. Pro Controller is not "must" for Mario.

How do Wii games look on HDTVs when played on the Wii U?

I've got a powerful enough PC to use Dolphin well, but some games (like Mario Galaxy) still have some audio issues or little glitches like that.

Any visual improvements (scalers, etc.) over just using a Wii?

They look slightly better than playing them through Wii hooked to the same TV. Still they don't look too hot. I can enjoy playing them but just be prepared to see some pretty rough stuff if you are used to Dolphin quality.

There are no scalers or anything like that. HDMI just looks a little better than some other cables Wii supported.

Wii games are rendered at its original 480p/480i and upscaled to your current resolution setting (720p, 1080p) just like the Xbox 360. They will still looked jagged though because its only an upscale.

Composite and Component video image quality will look cleaner and more colorful than on Wii (but maybe a little filtered if the Wii U res set to anything but 480i), and HDMI is as clean as it gets and outputs Ycbrcr (rec 709). Wii's image quality looks a little more exact but dirty in comparison.

Oddly enough I read and saw quite the opposite and bought one and love it. Worth double the asking price of 13$. Even my 4 year old can hold and use the controller

I just realized that, more than likely, I'm going to be buying physical games for this as the eShop is notorious for never reducing prices. For instance, ZombiU being $9 used on black friday.

I think I might just return the 1TB drive, as 32 gigs should be enough for any games I might grab digitally.

Is there any advantage in load times for going digital? Can you install disc games entirely into storage like on the 360?

The Wii U's drive is pretty goddamn loud and spins at all times unless you're in an app like Netflix.

I can't tell you how many responses I got for my WTB Wii U craigslist ad from people trying to sell me their OG Wiis.

There is a real problem there. These people have never even heard of the Wii U, let alone understand it.

of course, its not the first time that i read something like this, but it still surprises me... unreal (maybe not that unreal)

Really? Would seem super awkward to me to play a 3D game with the Wiimote's D-pad. Even if it is supported, that would be the absolute worst way to play the game.

We're talking about a compromise here. I'm just saying Wiimote is a better one than Pro Controller. Especially when you want to be able to enjoy a wide variety of local multiplayer titles.

So, I was going to buy a PS4 this year, but ended up picking up the Wind Waker bundle along with The Wonderful 101 and ZombiU. I'll get a PS4 eventually but right now there are no PS4 games I want to play.
So I'll be joining you guys soon, should arrive on friday. I'm excited!

i don't know if having the disc drive always working is the cause of this, but i love the fact that i can get from the menu to actually playing mario in like 10 seconds. feels like such a throwback to the nes days

Thanks guys. I will tell him about the Nintendoland bundle, that seems like a good bet.

FYI, quite a few titles support the Pro controller. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. should support it as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_U_games_that_use_the_Wii_U_Pro_Controller

The Nyko Pro Commander also has a built-in rechargeable battery, which the Wiimote does not.

I'm not saying don't get a Wiimote or two, I'm just saying that the Nyko Pro is a really competent secondary controller you should probably have a handful of given the ridiculously low price they're currently being sold for. And if the goal is to play 2D and 3D Mario immediately, then I'd rather drop $25-$40 on 2 or 3 Nyko Pros than drop $70-$100 on 2 or 3 Wiimotes.

Got the WiiU Mario+Luigi bundle along with Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, and Monster Hunter as an early birthday present. So I should be set for a while. My mom wanted me to hold off on the other games so she has something to get me for Christmas, so at that point, I'll be rounding out the collection with Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, and ZombiU.

Gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeet.

Edit: Was harder to find the Mario+Luigi bundle than it should've been. There was one Target in my area that had it, and nobody else seemed to have stock of it. Probably a combination of it selling fairly well, and stores just not wanting that much stock of it on hand. Whatevz.
