Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

I love my Wii U, but I ignore comments like this. Trophies and achievements are addictive and they extend the life of games for a lot of people. Nintendo's insistence on not including them is a negative that hurts their appeal. If you dont like them, they're easy to ignore. If you love them, they're great. Offering no choice in the matter is a bad thing.

I agree with this. I generally ignore trophies on my PS3 and PS4, but they're pretty inoffensive and don't bug me at all. It's nice to go in and see how I compare to my friends list once in a while. The Wii U not having some kind of achievement system is definitely not a positive, options are good.

Dude the achievements are there and sometimes they're actually included in the game (Arkham City, W101). The U basically gives you the option of creating them yourself via Miiverse.

Tell me what you what feel the difference in satisfaction is between hearing a *ding* from you cutting off 20 heads and seeing some box in the upper corner of your screen pop up, and taking an in game on the moment screenshot and then posting up "Haha bitches!!" for everyone in the U online community to see and comment upon.

Same fucking thing.

And screenshots are cooler anyways =P
The difference is that achievements are a permanent mark on your account that carries across every game that you play. I know some people don't care, but I think it's silly to argue that no one else should. There's nothing to lose, you don't have to participate if you don't want to. High scores in arcades, completion percentages, speed runs, it's just a natural, personal evolution of those things that I think only Nintendo hasn't implemented yet.

I made a thread about this a while back that went in similar circles and I don't think it's worth discussing in this one. I will say that I'd be a lot more excited to buy a Wii U than I already am if it had system-wide achievements, I highly suspect that I will miss them, I hope they add them some time, and I wish people wouldn't give them a pass on it.

Just sold a tablet that I wasn't using and in the market for a Wii U. No achievmemnts/system account is probably gonna bug me, but I want HD Nintendo games. Any advice for spotting a good deal?

There is an account system, just that all games are tied to your NNID, and currently your NNID is tied to the console, and only Ninty can transfer it at the moment, but that could change(hopefully). Arkham Origins has an achievement system that automatically post a picture on Miiverse at certain areas, Maybe we'll see more games do this.

Curious to see what Miiverse is about.

Say guys, games:
3D World
WW HD
W101? (Hype/Fans or real?)
Pikmin? (Never played)

...and is there a reason why I never hear anything about Monster Hunter 3? Been meaning to give those games a shot, seems like something I'd really like.

I'll probably pick 3 to start, unless I can be convinced that I *NEED* more than one of those question marks. I know Zombi U is supposed to be good but I have enough shooters to play.

Ugh can we keep the fucking achievements argument in the achievements thread? Its ok if its a post or two but let's not completely derail the thread.

It's like forums for each game, you can post screenshots, ask for help or ask what a game is about, or if it's worth buying.

3D world - you should definitely get
WWHD - If you haven't played it already might be a good pickup
W101 - tough one, I love it, but I understand it's not for everyone you might want to try the demo on the eShop first. Warning though the demo just throws you out there and might make the game seem more frustrating to play, the game as a whole is way better than the demo.
Pikmin 3 - awesome, I had never played a Pikmin game before this one, and it was awesome I highly recommend it.

ZombiU - survival horror not a shooter, great game very tense, limited ammo and supplies true survival horror game.

Is there no demo for Pikmin 3?
no, There isn't, but it's a great game

Super Mario 3D World is an all-time great mario game, and is very enjoyable in both single and multiplayer situations.

Wind Waker HD is fantastic, but this is coming from someone who didn't play the original. If you're brand new to the game, definitely get it. If you've played it before, only you can know if you want to purchase it again. From what I've heard, the improvements might be worth it to a Wind Waker veteran.

Haven't gotten far enough into W101 to make a judgement yet, but Pikmin 3 is a masterpiece and a must own IMO. The ONLY negative I've ever heard about it is length, but it's not really an issue if you want to 100% it.. plus there are 3 batches of very reasonable DLC now so there are plenty of extra missions. It's one of my favorite games.

Love 3D World and WW HD. Pikmin 3 is really great and one of my favourite games this year. Haven't gone deep in W101 yet, it's beautiful though and if you like action games or anything Platinum Games has done you should like it. Monster Hunter 3 is quite an undertaking, so I just know people who like LOVE it but I haven't given it a shot yet. But it's deep, can offer you hundreds of hours of gameplay if you wish and is much more fun when playing online hunting a monster co-operatively apparently. Zombi U is a nice survival horror and I wouldn't call it a shooter, but I'd still recommend 3D World, WWHD and Pikmin 3 as the top 3 games on the system. If you can get 4-5 player sessions, then Nintendoland is in there as well, pretty much all tied with one another.

Did a quick look at some gameplay videos and I think I will be getting both Pikmin and MH3. I think I'll really like Pikmin...

3DWorld and WWHD too obviously. Never played WW but it has always looked very intriguing to me. MM is the only Zelda title that I've really played through.

Sounds like W101 may be a rental first. Thanks guys.

Yeah, definitely rent W101 first to get a feel for it because the eShop demo starts you out in the middle of a random part of the game without knowing how to do anything.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a Monster Hunter demo. At least there was one months ago.

So, I just watched IGN's Game Scoop about the Wii U, and one thing really got me thinking. Despite how awesome Wii U owners realize the Gamepad to be, has there been a game to really show it off as an integral part of the Wii U? So far, it does a lot of side things very well, but in terms of gameplay, particularly in first party games, it doesn't add much.

I mean, the map usage in Pikmin 3 was a tremendous help while using the Wiimote and Nunchuck, and the ease of switching items and the map in WWHD quickens things, but aside from the party games, I feel like they're missing out on so much potential.

Also, as an aside, what would you guys like to see happen with the gamepad? Personally, I think a pen-and-paper D&D RPG-esque game on the Wii U would be quite an amazing thing. 1-4 players playing the adventurers on wiimotes or whatever, the Dungeon Master on the gamepad doing his dungeon mastering. Heavily multiplayer-based, maybe online, but best for couch play (I think the Wii U needs to be a stalwart in keeping couch multiplayer alive). Could include solo campaign with an AI DM or you play a DM trying to kill your AI adventurers with limited resources, etc.

W101 was a love hate affair for me for some time. In the end, I loved it, but it took me to watch numerous videos on how the combat works and gow to come to grips with it.

Theres one thing I really hate about Kamiya games; the grading. Bayonetta was terrible for it. If you wanted some stuff that really changed up the gameplay etc you had basically better be god tier at the game, getting all platinum runs etc. its like you are being punished for not being good enough and if you never really get in tune with exactly how the game works, stiff shit basically. W101 doesnt do it to the same extent, and I found it easier to come to grips with more so than Bayo but it definitely has a very steep learning curve and again like the Bayo games likes to remind you at the end of a level how shit you were because you couldnt finish every section without ever getting hit and running a never ending combo. There are from memory not as many unlockables for straight perfect runs though, where from my memory, bayonetta was straight up 'we hid tonnes of awesome shit behind a wall of fuck assery level bullshit impossibly unachievable criteria'

If you like W101, it will basically be holy shit this game is fucking awesome. But there is also real gamepad throwing temper tantrum levels of wtf is going on to coming to grips with it at times too. You can complete the game without being an action game freak but I often find with Kamiya games that I have difficulty getting to grips with how you are supposed to be playing the game.

Interestingly, never have problems with Itagaki Ninja Gaiden games, the precision of defense / counter / attack seems balanced where Kamiya games are more unrelenting combos which is something i usually struggle with.

I don't really give a shit about the gamepad. I'm fine having it serve as a map. The real reason to like the thing is because it's comfy as hell.

The new eShop music is nice. I bought AC III so that will be my new Wii U game. Just have to wait until it arrives.

Well, I'm in. Gonna pick up Zombie U and either Pikmin or Wonderful 101.

Also, the web browser seems great!

It's wasted potential to have it just be used as a map. It's fine for certain games, sure. I don't want all games on the Wii U to focus on gamepad-centric functions. But the Wii U's two screens are different from the 3DS's two screens. Both are personal, completely yours on the handheld, while only the gamepad is yours and the TV is public, relatively.

It may be because I've been playing a card game called Android: Netrunner lately, which deals with assymetrical play, but I'd personally like a non-party game to handle assymetrical play and do it well. ZombiiU's concept is close, but it plays more on the fact that it's hard to pay attention to both a TV and the gamepad at once.

ZombiU's multiplayer is probably the best non-Nintendoland example of what you're looking for.

Which I figured as much. I may pick it up eventually, but I'm really not good with survival horror. Would the multiplayer be worth the $20? Most of my impressions of the game were off of trying the demo which doesn't have multiplayer.

Congrats. Is it from the 250 dollar Ebay sale?

No, just a regular deal. Bundle wise it was either that or Zelda, but I already played Wind Waker back in the day.

Just curious if you guys find the disc drive loud at all? Mine is definitely noticeable.

This can't be said enough, it's amazing. Since the last firmware when you access the browser during a game, return to the game, and then come back to the browser, the page you were looking for is cached and instantly displayed. It wasn't the case before and was my main gripe. It's also so fast now, I love the Gyro controls to access the bottom of a GAF page.

I just wish I could find a way to use an Instapaper script on it.

I would say overall the game seems to be worth $20. I haven't played enough multiplayer to say definitively that it's worth $20 alone, but I can say that it was definitely a lot of fun for the few hours I played it, if not unfairly balanced in favor of the player placing the zombies. Essentially the person with the game pad plays a light rts/capture the flag hybrid and the person with the pro controller plays a ctf fps against the zombies. There appear to be 2 different modes and at least 4 or 5 different maps. I'd definitely recommend you at least find a way to try it out as it seems to be exactly what you are looking for. Also, Nintendoland is worth $15 if you don't have it already, there are several asynchronous games, of which some are surprisingly lengthy.

Edit: I should mention these are local multiplayer only; unfortunately there are no online modes.

Indeed is noticeable if you don't have anything else playing in the room. I get the discs out when I'm not playing usually. This is one more thing in favor of going all digital so I just hooked up a 1TB hdd on my WiiU

I'm currently enjoying the heck out of ZombiU(copped it via black Friday deal).

Looting and scavenging for supplies really sets the survival tone of this game...

...Despite some very minor imperfections, it's extremely hard to see why reviewers couldn't appreciate all the things these games do right.

I absolutely LOVE how much controll ZombiU gives you over how you progress throughout the game. Being constantly haunted by the possibility of permanently losing your current character due to one careless mistake, further drives you to play more carefully, with a real purpose behind every decision. You're not just trying to complete your next objective, you are genuinely trying to stay alive, and the only thing that matters - besides your own life - is your gear! This is survival horror in its purest sense.

Can't wait to dive back in again later. Judging by some comments, it seems like headphones w/gamepad is the best way to experience sound in this game?

I thought that Zombie U as a launch title was impressive. Unfortunately, many reviewers played it with FPS/COD goggles, hence the misunderstood reviews. You're absolutely right that this is survival horror in its purest sense. It's also one of the titles that utilizes the gamepad in a way that contributes to the overall experience. This is a must have for any Wii U owner, especially with the holiday deal price drops.

I personally liked playing with my speaker system turned up. The prepper's voice coming in through the gamepad's speaker really sounded like a handheld radio. However, I did play many times with the headphones via the gamepad (didn't want to wke the wife) and it was quite an immersive experience. So many little sounds that I didn't notice before, and the "oh shit" moments were amplified.

Yes it's quite loud. I got the Zelda bundle, which is digital so it's nice to not hear the drive.

On a side note, Twitch runs better on this than on my PS4. I pick a stream, send it to the tv and then browse on he gamepad. Awesome.

I did it GAF!

Just purchased the Mario bundle from the Nintendo UK store (the one with the free hat). Will be delivered by tomorrow, but I'm going to be strong and wrap it up and put it under the tree for Christmas Day. My wife and daughter will be nearly as excited as me!

On second thoughts, I might set it up, get the updates sorted and THEN wrap it back up and put it under the tree. Don't want Christmas Day morning ruined.

Awesome! There's gunna be fighting over who gets to wear the Mario hat on xmas day though...

Updating now is probably the best option. I don't think you need to update to play the games (although maybe Mario world, can't be sure on that one), but it'd be a good idea to get it out of the way.

Same dilemma. Been taunting my son about playing Lego City then reminding him we don't have a Wii U. Mine just arrived....do I set it up now or wait till Christmas? The tree is in the den and the Wii U will be in the media room. Thought I could give him the game and get that look of "How am I supposed to play this?"

Maybe just hide the WiiU present, then on Xmas have him open the Lego City present and as the disappointment sets in whip the wrapped WiiU out of a hiding place.

I've got a vague recollection of my parents doing this to me with Atari ST games.

So, I got one of black friday, just walked in well after opening and picked one up.

I brought it to my usual hang out with the guys, and gotta say, Nintendoland's Mario Chase, Ghost Hunt, and Candy game dominated the night. A bunch of grown men screaming at each other while playing these games. The other games weren't even touched.

Anyone know of some other good mini-games similar to those 3? Those went over so well that I think I should stock up on games with more of them. Even Kung Foot was ignored by my group.

I know there is a Nintendo Land 2 in the works. I'm hoping they include more games like those 3, and perhaps with more configuration and handicapping options.

It does not fit my hands comfortably. :/ Those handle bumps on the backside make my hands cramp after an hour or so. :/ Using a large pillow on my lap (and letting gamepad rest on that pillow) helps though. I'm not sure how am I holding it wrong or if I just have some kind of mutant hands. :B

It's not really a huge issue for me but definately a bummer. I love my Wii U and I recently fell in love with the remote play function. We have our Wii U on our bedroom and connection pretty much reaches everywhere in our home! Yeah, the pros of having a relatively small appartment (64 square meters or 689 square foot). :D

I agree, I have a very hard time holding the gamepad comfortably... I think it's the lack of downward handles (like on a controller) in combination with the very uncomfortable back handles.

You "know" about a Nintendoland 2? I don´t think anyone does. To answer your question: 3D World or NSMBU support up to 5 players as well. Get those.

OK guys I finally joined the party! Today my Mario & Luigi pack, Wii U Gamepad High Capacity Battery, Zombi U & NintendoLand arrived plus I already have Super Mario 3D World & The Wonderful 101 here beside me that I bought last week.

I'm also getting Pikmin 3 tomorrow. Can't wait to try all these games! ^_^

My fiance saw a commercial for Super Mario 3D World last night and mentioned she'd like to play it. I haven't gotten her anything for Christmas yet and cancelled my PS4 and XBone pre-orders as I mainly use my PC for gaming these days.

What is the best deal for a Wii U? Is the Mario bundle worth it? I haven't been following the console much, but I think it would be something she'd like. I've got the original Wii with the original Wii-motes (non motion plus) if that matters.

the mario bundle is worth it.

the original wii with the original wiimotes of course do matter as the wiimotes are compatible. there are some games with motion plus required (for example nintendoland) though. new super mario bros u is not. i think 3dworld can be played multiplayer without motion plus as well.

The Luigis mansion game is really really good. Mario Chase and Animal crossing I think is meh in comparison (I had a lot of fun though).

Dont miss out on Zelda, Pikmin and metroid though. especially Zelda and pikmin are great coop games.

Some of the singleplayer games (donkey kong in particular) are very good as well.

Which I figured as much. I may pick it up eventually, but I'm really not good with survival horror. Would the multiplayer be worth the $20? Most of my impressions of the game were off of trying the demo which doesn't have multiplayer.

The game is tense as hell in single player, but the opposite is true for multiplayer. It's a hoot. Basically because you are playing with uneven weapons/odds, it's more like just trying to screw over your opponent. It's really fun even if in theory it sounds bland, it really isn't and i'd say it is very much suited for casual gamers as well. If you want to even the odds, have the survivor play with the Wiimote. Controls aren't as tight as COD, or even close, but it will definitely give you an edge over the pro controller. Capture the flag games you were losing 4-5, you will now be winning 5-4.

I'd say it's worth 20 bucks for the multiplayer experience, if you actually have someone to play it with. Don't expect it to be the only thing you'll do for months, because for that, there are too few modes available in MP. It's not that fleshed out. And i would also recommend trying the SP, even if it's not your cup of tea, just to get a sniff of what everybody's been talking about. But know that you will die, and it's ok to die (once in a while).

Pikmin 3, Nintendoland, ZombiU are the best uses so far imho

The gamepad is also great on any open world type game like Assassins creed, Batman or lego city undercover.

Also it is really good for inventory management while playing monster hunter (but thats also partly because of the broken nature of that games standard inventory management system).
