Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Well, the obvious reason is because the Wii has atrocious video output, but yeah, the process is convoluted enough that I dunno if I wanna bother. And you're correct about those upscaling issues.

If that is a problem for you, you could get a Neoya Wii2HDMI plug-in transcoder (NOT a clone though, those have crappy scalers.) so you can convert the multiout to HDMI straight at the source. This way, you have no additional analog signal loss to worry about like when using component cables. Then, you can connect that to your favorite gaming display or scaler, and take it from there.

Nah, it's not that it's going through component - it's that the actual video hardware is bad. Gamecube and Xbox, for example, look significantly cleaner via component than the Wii does.

Just bought the wii u pro controller, felt really nice.
Slightly off topic
I accidentally bought wii u pro controller for USD 60 bucks(i convert it) from my local seller here
My eagerness to get the controller fool me.
Haih that was a dumb mistake to do, hopefully i learnt my lesson. I should bought off internet
Never going to do that again

Oh rea-hea-hea-healllyyy

You need to print this out and take it with you to get it?
If so I have to quickly print it out ;).

Oh wait, the MediaMarkt has to be within a 15km radius of the shop? So only if it's near Maastricht?

Yeah, there is that 15km, But who knows how strict they are with that.

Is the Wii U Monster Hunter game identical to the Wii MH game, but with HD graphics?

no

WiiU Monster Hunter has a lot more content. It has more weapons (which, as you might know, means a lot in MH since every Weapon plays drastically different) more monsters has better online, supports cross play with the 3DS version etc.

I don't know if you're asking because you already have the Wii version or if you're deciding whether to buy the Wii U or the Wii version. If it's the latter you should know that the online servers for the Wii version have been shut down this year.

Okay, this is a stupid question I know but I've never actually known and googling it is surprisingly tricky. The off-tv play, where you play the game fully on the gamepad. Does this depend on wifi or is it some crazy voodoo magic? I'm asking because at home I have horrible wifi that wouldn't stretch if I had the console in the living room - where off-tv play would be most useful. Even if it reached, I only get 250kb/s download speeds.

I think the Wii U and gamepad have their own wireless connection going on and don't use the same WiFi that gives access to Internet.

It is communication direct from console to gamepad that does not depend on your internet at all.It doesn't touch your wifi or router or anything like that.

Fantastic, so the limiting factor is things like thick walls or where you place the console I guess. Okay, great. I'm sure my house will ensure it barely reaches the next room, but at least I know it's not limited by wifi. The nieces will love the ability to play 3d world like it's 3d land on the big gamepad when Dad wants the TV!

Wifi has impact in terms of range, becuse the router signal can create interferences, but the "communication" is all between console and pad.
I am able to play both on the bed and in the bathroom, while other people aren't, even at the same distance

This is where JRPGs have been screwing up. They think we're playing them for the graphics (they aren't even on top there anymore anyway) and the exploration, adventure, and openness is completely lost as a result. What you're left with is something like a COD corridor if it was about anime and instead of competitively shooting people you're pressing buttons every 15 seconds on a d-pad. I'd love something like FFIX with WWHD graphics.

Not just that, they also are still trying to remake FF7 with almost every JRPG ever. Like how the majority of Western-made RPGs is Lord of the Ringsy-medieval grit. I wish they would just realize that an RPG can be set anywhere. Doesn't have to be space fantasy land, it could just be some random town on earth. It's why I'm always happy when an RPG is straying from that trope. Contact, Earthbound, Alpha Protocol, Jade Empire...

Know that you can just move the console around if you're planning on a longer play session in another room. Just unplug the sensor bar and HDMI cable and put it where ever it needs to sit. That's the cool thing about it being so tiny and light. It's easy to move it around.

Xenoblade gave me hope, while Tales Of Zesteria is keeping those hopes up, with Project X being...probably my jrpg heaven becoing true

4. Sort of. MH3U is an expansion of the Wii game. It has more monsters and more quests but yeah, the game is the same till you get to the point of the new quests/mosnters

To elaborate on this, in 3U, all quests are actually playable without the necessity to go online. So unlike Tri, which is now les than half of the original game due to the online being shut down, 3U will still be enjoyable in solo or local MP after that happens for that game.

Well, sometimes you can, sometimes you can't, but assume you can't to be on the safe side when it comes to games that don't feature asymmetrical gameplay. I left that part out accidentally. It's not a hard rule, but just a good thing to assume.

Think about it this way: Similar controllers for all to be on the same playing field. Do you want Billy screaming "Susan got the tablet controller, I want to use it!"? Some devs have thought the same.

Some go against this. Mario And Sonic At Sochi is an example of this, as one of the people must always use the Gamepad in some games, even 2 player hockey, and the person using the gamepad has an unfair advantage that player 2 can never attain; it's not fair.
What advantage? I want the option to use the WiiU gamepad like a normal controller in a MP game. Switch off the screen, no asymmetrical gameplay.

Basically, if I want to play NSMBU, it should be possible that 3 people play with wiimotes and one guy plays with the WiiU gamepad. That one player with the WiiU gamepad should not be forced into the asymmetrical gameplay thing where he just can place blocks on the screen. He should be able to control a character on the big screen like the others.

I think it's a huge oversight not to allow that option. It really exacerbates the already horribly confusing and annoying controller situation on the WiiU.

Urgh. Have a 150euro voucher from work that I can use in gamestop.. decide to go in and see what they have even though it'll be overpriced I figured I'd have a look. Their selection of games is abysmal! They didn't have New Super Mario Bros U, Fire Emblem Awakening or any good Wii titles like Mario Galaxy 1 or 2, Xenoblade. The only thing that caught my eye was they have Pandora's Tower for 30euro which is pretty reasonable given it's relative short supply. It's the least favored of the operation rainfall trilogy by the looks of it though and i've actually no idea what it's about.

Retail shopping is such a chore :(

edit:
Oh yeah, went into GameStop looking for Xenoblade today and asked if they had a new copy (since the used ones are marked above retail) and he straight up told me that they're all new and all of those copies were just opened up stuck with a used game sticker. I remember seeing something about this, but was it ever confirmed?

That's just Final Fantasy, there's many JRPG series that aren't just about looking good.

Check out Megaten and Trials in the Sky if you're interested in the best ones.

Least favored just means the other two are that good. PT is just way smaller in scale and is less traditional in its RPGness. It's like a cross between Zelda and Castlevania with a little Shadow of the Colossus sprinkled on top (just a little though) in that it has you explore thirteen tower-dungeons in order to save Elena from permanently turning into a monster. You do that by bringing her the hearts of the monsters you defeat on your journey while she is hiding out with a mysterious companion since you're being hunted down by soldiers. There's character relationship mechanics, weapon crafting and a time-management system in place that forces you to consider how often you go back. It's a really really interesting game and and story concept and it's a neat showpiece for how a Castlevania game in 3D might work with a whip without going the Lords of Shadow route.

Another thumbs up here for Pandora's Tower. It's less RPG-like in that there's not really a world to explore, you venture out to the dungeons from the building you've taken up residence in simply through a level select, there's no journey to each of them. But it's a very cool game, the kind of experimental mid-tier gem that rarely surfaces these days.

I know. I understand that, I think I might go back and get it. Since it's actually cheaper than anything I can find online and it'd be the first time I've bought something retail since Pokemon Black. I haven't played Xenoblade or The Last Story, so I would prefer to go with them if I could! I'm going to have a look at the other gamestops in the area when I get the chance. I'm definitely considering it. The alternative is to cash the voucher into steam wallet credit and use that over the xmas sale which is probably going to be more economical in the long term but much less fun :(

Pandora's Tower is an interesting game, but it's also not very polished and gets repetitive halfway through (which is where i left off). Xenoblade is epic in scope and never gets boring (imo... unless you maybe go after all the sidequests), but character models are maybe the worst of the three games. Last Story is basically the polar opposite of the other two. It's much more conventional, very polished, small environments, short... but it does have interesting battle mechanics. If you want to play tLS, i recommend you play it before Xenoblade (which sets the bar too high). PT is rather different and more quirky and steers clear of what the other two games are trying to do.

WWHD is probably one of the most eye pleasing games I've ever experienced and it's by far the best remake out there in my opinion, where the 50 bucks dropped is well worth it for the changes that were made.

Ive got a couple issues though, most notably with the gyroscopinc aiming. Luckily my Pro C is coming in today, but if all you have is a Pad then the gyro aiming is gonna be your go to method since, if you select the option to turn it off, you then must do some uncomfortable finger gymnastics for certain boss battles and instances that require items like the boomerang when you need to hit multiple targets. The fact that the analog sticks are placed so far apart make this a real pain in the ass.

Dont get me wrong, it is a cool feature, except when I gotta take out this creature with all of these tentacles sprouting 360 degrees around it and it requires me to twist my body like Linda Blairs head in the Exorcist.

I just set stuff like the boomerang to R. Then it just feels like you're playing an FPS or something.

So what is the deal with the lack of invert option in WWHD? I hear it does support inverting Y-axis, but not universally? Is it a situation where in 3rd person the camera can be inverted, but enter first-person mode and it is stuck on normal?

I've got a $25 Gift card and was looking to nab this, but as an inverted player, I am willing to avoid as its nearly 2014 and I have no respect or patience for developers that can't be bothered to implement an option that has been standard practice for well more than a decade.

You can invert the Y.....in first person mode.

Otherwise, during normal gameplay you can't, and it fuckin sucks. My brain had to do a hurdle to get adjusted to it.

Oh that's even worse given most of the game is spent outside of first-person. There is a camera snap option at least right?

I snagged Zombi U during the $15 BB sale and that game allows you to invert during exploration, but enter first-person scan mode on the gamepad, and Ubi fucking reverts control to non-invert which has me raging and killing my motivation to play.

Camera snapping meaning hittin a button to center the camera behind you? If so, yeah you use the left trigger for that. Helps a bunch.

Got my refurbished wiimote plus and nunchuck last weekend from Nintendo...holy crap they're in nearly flawless condition. In fact they made me realize that the stick on my other nunchuck is sort if loose. Damn you Nintendo!

Point is it's an amazing, amazing deal.

Yea, at least with a camera snap option I might be inclined to flat out ignore the right stick. Twilight Princess on Wii didn't have a right stick camera pan option at all, so maybe I'll still jump in. Still, that really blows.

Lego Marvel lacks this option as well. Travellers Tales even patched in an invert option into Lego Batman 2 years ago after hearing profuse complaints, yet they didn't take that lesson into their new game?

There are some developers I hate to support.

Only thing i hate about wwhd is that it doesnt support wiimote. Huge missed opportunity.. Tp style waggle control would have been more than enough for me as far as i am concerned.

Shame Nintendo don't do any refurbished stuff in Europe, at least not in the UK. Ended up just shelling out on a new remote and nunchuk :(

So what is the deal with the lack of invert option in WWHD?

The reason you can invert in first person and not in third person is because the third person camera is not a rotating camera like in every other third person game where you would want to invert. Nintendo uses a zoom-camera where hitting up brings it closer and doesn't rotate it around the characters neck.

Oh so it works like Monster Hunter...a game that also zooms the camera in to various tier thresholds of zoom when hitting up or down on the right stick, rather than a smooth free vertical rotation. A game that also lets you invert the up/down functionality of those zoom views, because there is no reason they can't just reverse up/down for different consumer preferences.

I ordered some cheapo nunchucks from amazon (because Nintendo's asking price of $25 for a nunchuck is a rip off). Totally ready for them to break after 2 uses, anything else would be a bonus :D

ok. thanks for everything guys. Been playing monster hunter 3 ulti.

now, i tried registering my wiiu so i can get those coins via nintendo club, and it says that after 1 hour the survey should appear. its been close to 24 hours now.

is this normal ?

You can get a refurbished Remote Plus and matching Nunchuk for ~$20 on their site. They work perfectly for me.

Which controller is the best for MH Wii U? Can you play with the gamepad?

Ooooohweeeeee that Pro C controller is comfy as fuck.

I dont know what game to break it in with though. Thinkin I might just wait til Cranky Kongs arrival in February.
