Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Are these external batteries necessary? How bad is the Gamepad's battery anyway?

i guess it wont matter if you spend most of your time in living room. also with a bunch of friends over it would be ackward to be tethered to the tv if the session is longer than 2 hours, that would be kinda dangerous, what with the cord and seat swapping. i get the feeling 4/5 hours is more than enough time with the newer 2550 battery.

Where can I buy the external battery online if I live in the US and does it work with a US gamepad?

Sounds like a silly question but you never know...

I know the white is only 8gb, but did anyone choose it over the black due to color preference? If so, do you regret it?

Probably going with the black. However it would be nice to have some color variety since my ps3 and ps4 are both black.

It's been said here before. What you are missing with the basic bundle:

  • An additional 24gb of storage... which doesn't matter if you'll be downloading demo's, DLC, VC, Indie and/or regular games, because you'll need an external HDD anyway.
  • The e-shop discount/promotion, which only runs one more year... and will save you less money than buying retail in most cases. Only good if you're really buying digital a lot.
  • Wii sensor bar, if you own a wii, and don't intend to keep it hooked up, not an issue.
  • Possibly a pack-in game, obviously.
  • Charging cradle+stand for the pad, this is the only thing you'd really miss IMO. And you can find them on amazon for $3.20 from a third party, also in white iirc. The original Nintendo set includes the stand, and costs only $6.5 but comes in black.
  • The "feet" to put the console on its side (like the wii). I don't know if you can buy the original item separately but there are 3rd party solutions (which are less attractive though).

So take a look at the price difference, but you're not really missing that much, and the money you save can go towards the games you really like (a lot of early WiiU games are now dirt cheap) and those extra accessories you'll be missing. That is if you really want a white one.

What is the resolution for Youtube videos? Was playing around with the Youtube channel on the Wii U last evening.

The high quality videos is really the only reason I use that, since YouTube via the browser is more convenient.

Thankfully an update is coming soon.

I used to think this was true but I have been using the Deluxe with no external hard drive since launch and still haven't felt the need. I've downloaded plenty of content, including lots of VC and indie games, Wii Fit U and Sports Club, DLC and several demos, and I still have room to spare. I think needing an external is only a given if you have plans to download retail games, and even then 3D World, for example, is only a couple of gigs (though some are much bigger).

That said, if you don't mind adding an external drive to your setup then there's no need to worry about the difference in hard drive space between the two models.

However, if you'll be downloading so much that you'll need an external HDD, it might still be worth it to go with the Deluxe to take advantage of the Deluxe Digital Promo.

sigh..youtube app is still crap, so I go to use the browser..stupid google meddling in again, You can't watch a video from someone who is "partnered" on the wii u browser..keeps saying " this video is unavailable on this device " for a lot of videos T_T

yeah i keep having the same problem. What you can do is go to settings in the internetbrowser and go to the agent signature. (dunno the real english name because mine is set in dutch) and set wii u to android or ipad. Then you can watch the videos again. the only problem is you cant play them at 720p anymore :( like in the wii u mode but you can watch videos again.

A friend told me he'd got more use out of his Nintendos since the ps4 arrived last week. Quite happy to hear this but a little confused, I asked him to explain... then he showed me this:

That's good for him. Using those PS4 games to distinguish the Wii from the Wii U. It can be confusing at times.

Oh cool. I really thought these Wii U topics have been lacking PS4 praise and Wii U hate. Good contribution.

Let's talk about Wii mode in the Wii U for a bit. I've never really explored it before as I still have my old Wii hooked up and have used that on the rare occasions in which I've wanted to play Wii games the past year. Last night I booted into it for the first time and was really impressed. It's a cool approach to backwards compatibility -- it really is like having two consoles in one, and the Wii output looks great on the Gamepad screen (and improved on the TV over HDMI also). I could really see myself making use of this. It's remarkable how even a year after I bought it this console keeps surprising me.

One thing I found weird though was the lack of Settings configuration in Wii mode. The "Wii" button in the lower left corner of the main menu goes directly into Data management now, and there's no Settings to be found in there. Am I missing something? Does the Wii mode automatically use settings from the Wii U mode?

Also, I tried to connect to the Wii eShop but couldn't. I think it's because my router is currently using WPA2 security, which the Wii U settings notified me wasn't compatible with the Wii. Anyone know what wireless configuration is preferred for use in Wii mode? Is it WEP? I've read this encryption is not very secure, so I've been reluctant to change it, but I'd love to be able to get some of the better VC games from the Wii eShop.

My big problem with Wii mode on the Gamepad is the inability to actually use the Gamepad controls. That's such a killer. I wish they could patch that ability in. Off TV play with regular Wii games would be great.

no matter how many times i try, every time i go into wii mode, i start pressing buttons and try to use the touchscreen before it reminds me i need a wiimote

The problem is that some games require motion controls. They'd need to patch the games. But the VC should be support at least.

Okay I need help: Pikmin 3 oder Wonderful 101?

1. I've never played Pikmin before, I don't know why...maybe because I don't like time limits
2. I played the W 101 demo and didn't like it. I had no idea what was going on, camera and controls are bad (imo). But the full game may be different?

There were small changes between EU and US packs... i think EU didn't get one bundled in.

Mine is ozfunghi, i accept all invitations.

Haven't played W101 YET. Just the demo. But i think if you liked Viewtiful Joe, you'll like this. Pikmin is a cute RTS game. Timelimit is not really a problem. You can replay previous "days" and tasks you didn't finish, you can finish the next day (unless you run out of juice). Extra modes are basically races against the clock though, but story mode is pretty laid back. Can't praise the game too much. It's great. The best in the series.

Well.. to put things into perspective... i think AC3 was something of 13gb? Possibly AC4 is more? That means you can download two of such games and you're done. These games cost (new on e-shop) 65 Euro i think. That means with the premium pack, you'll need a HDD after downloading two such games, for which you will get €10 back due to the promotion. So either you download a lot and you'll need more space anyway. Or you don't download a lot and the digital promotion is lost on you.

You gotta think they're working on that. It would almost be too good to be true if they figure it out, a true killer app. Still, having a portable Wii screen is pretty neat, and using a separate controller didn't seem that bad in my short test run. It's a half-measure for sure, but VC games on the Gamepad with the classic controller still appeals to me.

It was either because I was reading this thread last night or something but I actually dreamed I went to buy that Wii U bundle with both New Super Mario/Luigi games.

Yes, I think the Wii mode uses the settings from the Wii U menu. I was a little thrown off by this at first when I tried to adjust the Wii Remote settings in Wii Mode and couldn't find anything.

First time playing WW HD ever. I spent a lot of time yesterday night with the game and I cannot emphasize enough what a good job they did with the enhancements, the game looks alive. They are using Ambient Occlusion in great ways, specially noticeable with the boat, amazing! As for the game itself I will just tell you that I started at 9pm and went to bed at 4am, great adventure full with details, great environments and very very immersive game giving its visual style. So far 10/10 for me.

Great job, specially holding BF4, as it will need a lot of holding, that game does not seem to work for shit!

Both are incredible games and unique experiences, but I'm a Pikmin man myself.
Also, the time limit in Pikmin 3 ≠ the time limit in Pikmin 1. It plays a lot better. Buy Pikmin, is what I'm saying.

I'm loving it too, only got it a few days ago as well. All the little new things really add a lot to the whole experience. Nintendo sure knows how to polish something that was already very shiny!

Spent a week with the WiiU so far. NSMBU I hated but then I played with a friend and it was hilarious being dicks to one another. Not sure if I can play it alone though. Which brings us to Wii Party U - the minigames are pretty fun but some of them are based on completely randomness which notably takes away the fun.

Pikmin 3 is the only game I'm really playing right now and it's been very laidback and quaint. Currently just waiting for Mario Land 3D World and will actually take a step back by getting Last Story and Xenoblade to play on the vWii. I also have W101 but I set it aside once I realized there'd be a learning curve before I can enjoy the game.

Other than that I have the usual complaints about the system. Notably why are there so many controller options, and why can't they be uniformly supported. The virtual console shop is terrible - I'd love to throw my money at nintendo if they actually let me play my virtual console stuff cross-platform - but they currently don't deserve it in that aspect.

Also why won't Nintendo let me yell at people in Wii Sports U?

Sure, I don't expect every game that had motion controls to be converted, that would be unreasonable to expect. But for games that supported the Wii Classic Controller? There's just no reason why the Gamepad can't emulate that. I mean, how great would it be to be able to play A Boy and his Blob with Off TV play?

I'm getting a PS4 Killzone Mega Bundle for £465.

Out of interest, I went on to Amazon to see how much Wii U I could get for the same price.

I could get:

Wii U Deluxe
New Super Mario Bros. U
New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
The Wonderful 101

All for £365, £100 less than the PS4 bundle.

Now I'm having doubts about PS4.

Holy crap... that's a no brainer. But I don't understand how you are getting all those games for so cheap.

That's all straight from Amazon UK. NSMBU and NSLU are both bundled with the Wii U.

look at it this way - every one of those games you listed is good to great , and every one of them is nintendo exclusive. in the meantime while you wait for the ps4 to get a worthwhile exclusive you can save up

All depends on games. If you like those as much as I do, go for wiiu.
And add zombi. Should be cheap.
Next year for that price you can have ps4 with more games
