Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

I find myself in a predicament. My girlfriend likes Mario games and wouldn't mind a Wii U for Christmas(despite being puzzled by the purpose of the Wiipad). My heart tells me Nintendo is going to bail the console by the end of the 2014/first quarter 2015 and I would just be dumping cash into a failure. I'm not sure if I should just get her a 3DS or swallow my doubt and get the Wii U. I feel like I have time since, as the OP stated, there are no shortages whatsoever.

The Wii U is not going to be canned any time soon. Buy with confidence.

You can never say never, but they would be insane to do it. Nintendo are undoubtedly eccentric, but I don't think they're dumb enough to upset the people who are currently supporting them and that they'll need for the next go-round.

If you're really concerned, just add up all the games already available and announced to be coming in 2014 that you'd want to play. If it feels like you'd be getting your money's worth regardless of what happens beyond that point, go for it (that's basically what I did).

There's no way Nintendo is going to kill the thing off that early. I have no doubt they are working on the Wii U successor right now, but building a console takes a long time.

This, exactly. I'm sure the big three are all already at the very least planning next-gen out. Nintendo is insane and unpredictable but I don't think they've become suicidal yet.

Unless hell froze over, there is no way Nintendo is going to drop the console. Play and enjoy.

It might not have as long of a life as PS3/360 did, but it will still last through at least 2015, in my opinion. Nintendo isn't a company that will abandon an entire console based on sales until they have all of their heavy hitter franchises released for it. They still are working on getting out Smash and Zelda for the end of the next year although I feel that one of those is going to be pushed into 2015. After that, they still are likely going to release at least one more major Nintendo franchise in 2015 (Metroid if I had to guess?).

Guys I'm having huge issues sending friend requests via Miiverse.

Everything else seems to work flawlessly: accessing Miiverse itself (obviuosly), writing / replying and giving "Yeahs" to posts... but whenever I send the friend request, the system enters a loop and after a while claims there's no Internet connection available :-\

Any suggestions?

I have a question for the New Super Mario brothers and lugi version of the game, can you play two player co op with one person on the gamepad and another on a normal wii mote yet? I hated that I couldn't do this when I originally bought a wii u back near launch. Have they updated it or can you still only play as the boost pad thing on the gamepad

Thanks for the replies. It's more for her (as whimsical as SM3DW is, I wouldn't dump cash on a system for it).

GAF, I'm about to buy a Wii U in a few days.

So far I plan on buying the following stuff:

  • Wii U Mario + Luigi Premium Pack
  • GamePad High-Capacity Battery
  • Super Mario 3D World
I'm going to buy ZombiU and The Wonderful 101 later this month or at the beginning of next month.

Did I miss anything important for the start of my Wii U experience? Shall I buy a Pro Controller or a Wiimote+Nunchuk for Mario-Coop (and maybe Rayman Legends later down the line)?

Stop listening to idiots on the internet who have no clue about anything predicting doom. This is not going to happen. 100%.

So i just got a wii usb to lan adapter, but i wonder what kind of cable does it need? crossover?or direct?

A regular ass ethernet cable. The same one you'd plug into your other consoles or PC if you want to connect it to a router. You only need crossover cables to directly connect two computers without a hub/switch.

Same happens to me. Maybe this is a hiccup due to the imminent 3DS Miiverse update. Let's see how it is from tomorrow after the 3DS FW update hits.

No. GamePad = boost mode only in multiplayer. Still that way. Will likely never change, otherwise it would've been in the update that introduced Pro Controller support.

I couldn't find a wii u related question thread so ..anyway I have plenty of wii games that I play on the wii u, problem is, back on the wii I used to able to get game saves from the internet and use it to play games like smash etc with everything unlocked. I didn't do the system transfer cause my wii is broken so question is.. can I download wii game saves from the internet again via SD card and use it on wii mode on the wii u? I tried doing it but it's not working for some reason..anyone else tried this?

am thinking about buying one next month , and i wanna buy a 3ds for ALBW , but both are expansive here ( am in KSA ), i also got a ps4 pre ordered , the difference between the wii u and the ps4 is about (50 $) .

i think the wii u got potential as long as Nintendo go for a great releases every 40 days or so, otherwise the system will suffer from droughts .

Pro Controller seems like a fine investment for now, but honestly I prefer using the classic controller Pro to play this game; that octagonal gate is awesome for a game that already uses a "software restrictor", if you catch my drift.

So if you have a CC Pro or can get one cheap, get a nunchuck combo to plug it into.

I'm gonna pick up a second hand Wii U in an hour, are there any things that should be specifically looked at that get easily broken etc.

Already bought SM3DW, and with the system I get AC3 and MH3, probably going to trade in AC3 but which game complements the other 2 the best, and local mp would be nice?

Thanks in advance

What's the best deal right now or upcoming deal for the Wii U?

$250 for the Mario Bundle seems to be the going reoccuring deal if you can jump on one while it's available. Some stores and different online places have had this deal at different times over the past week or two.

You could always call around to your local Walmart Target etc... to ask what they are selling it for. Get them to actually scan it as people have been finding sales in the wild that aren't premarked.

Also if you are a member of Cosco or Sams check there. I know someone from CAG found the old Wii U bundle for under $200 at Sams.

Hi,
I'll be away from home for 2-3 months and I want to buy something which enables videochats. I wanted a cheap laptop or a tablet, but recently I thought of the U.

Is there a way to videochat with someone who doesn't own tho console?

No, only Wii U to Wii U. A tablet will be the best choice.

Haven't encountered any hardware issues myself, but the obvious stuff would be the gamepad screen, sticks and buttons. I think I've seen a few people in this thread make reference to grindy sticks and squishy buttons on occasion.

Nintendo land is good fun in multiplayer, cheap and makes a nice change of pace from platforming and monster hunting. Alternatively I believe the Wonderful 101 has multiplayer but can't vouch for the quality of it.

Bummer :(. Thx for the reply!

But don't buy that crap (Playbook) from Blackberry! Doesn't even do skype, only a proprietary app, just like Wii U.

How are game load times over the USB 2.0 hard drive, vs the internal flash or an optical disk?

Disc is slowest, internal SSD is fastest. USB inbetween. There is a comparison video for MH3 posted here somewhere. Disc>USB:HDD>USB:SSD>internal SSD

Check the screen, i guess.
Get Pikmin 3, ZombiU, Lego City Stories or W101... i think they all complement those games.

I was looking into that Mario bundle and it looks to sell out very quickly any time it pops up. Guess I'll set some alerts up and try to jump on that the next time it becomes available. Hopefully we see more deals between now and Christmas

Internal flash should be quickest, but it's not bad I have a 500GB connected to my Wii U and it doesn't take long. I believe it varies from game to game though SC: Blacklist seems to take a bit longer for me.

hmmmm......lets say this again. There are other great awesome games for the system out now and will be out in the future. Why do people say that like if there is only one game out for the system?

Honestly though, what's the life expectancy on Wii U. At it's current pace end of 2015 with 2016 a new offering.

Does it really matter? No one here knows. People that own the Wii U will say get it now because it is great system and people that don't own one will say Nintendo will end production this weekend.

For certain, the less systems it sells will limit its longevity.

It concerns me because I kind of regret buying one if they continue on this pace..There hasn't been any mind blowing games on it, just average to great games.

If you're that concerned and are regretting it, then sell it to someone on here looking for a deal.

Does the Wii U turn itself on and check for updates? I noticed this morning that the red light was orange. I looked a few minutes later and it was back to red.

Why would anyone want a console that only had great games, right? You should sell it.

I didn't know it had been confirmed already, that's nice to hear!

Thanks.

It's not confirmed but it doesn't need to be. It's obvious :)

Since you can manually transfer saves via SD card to Wii Mode nothing is stopping you. But you must have a hazy memory since the Smash saves have always been locked to the system (like all saves from online-enabled games).

Yes, it's been doing that since April or so. That's when automatic updates were introduced. It downloads and installs system and game updates in standby mode.

I don't know, I fucking love my Wii U. Maybe cause I just bought it a few months ago and don't need a million games, but every gaming experience I've had on it has been excellent. These include Super Mario U, Lego City, WindWaker, Mario 3D World, and Pikmin 3. I also recently picked up Batman Arkham City, Deux Ex, Assassin's Creed 3, and Black Ops 2, so currently I have a backlog that will last me a while. ALL of these games I got used except Mario 3D World which I bought new, so it's been an incredible value. This console is going nowhere anytime soon, and there's several big Nintendo titles I'm looking forward to. There's also ample 3rd party support for my needs, especially with the big titles. I don't plan to buy any other console in the near future, or even this generation- I think with the amount of time I'm comfortable with investing in gaming, it will be more than enough. And to this, day, there are no games/franchises that excite me more than Nintendo ones, and I don't have a single urge to buy/play anything that's out right now for the other 2 next gen systems.

They can't really make a new console that soon. They need to prepare the next handheld by then and it is obvious that they can't support two launches at once.

Yeah, even without my planned "360 is dead, guess I'll play em here" multiplat purchases, it seems like there are more games I want to buy than I actually have time to play to my satisfaction.

We will have to agree to disagree. For my intents and purposes (Xmas gift), it's a Mario box.

3D World is amazing, but there are also so many other great games on it. Why be so narrow minded and only see 1 game on something you want to buy when there are so many great games and gaming experiences to be had with the console.
