Album version of "I" is dope, makes me want to hear this live. On the whole this album sounds like it'd be something crazy with a live band.

GKMC is a rap album, made by a rapper

TPAB feels like something bigger, made by a musician - nothing else on the market sounds quite like it and I fucking love Kendrick for rapping something else than mindless materialism and shit like every other person does

yes. I like that definition. TPAB feels like a album made by a musician, not a rapper.

Got like 4 songs left to listen to but I don't think this is for me. I dig King Kunta and The Blacker The Berry and like 2 or 3 other songs but the rest doesn't do much for me. What the hell is up with 'u'?

A lot of people are going to hate this album for having no bangers and call it a snoozer, but I feel there are about a half dozen or more tracks on here that will age well. The album will be forgotten about by the masses as soon as Kanye and Action Bronson drop their shit, it will win no awards and others will call it a dud. But I feel it will be a conversation piece for music critics and other artsy types for a long ass time.

This is what I mean. This is the demographic that will love the shit out of this album.

Went to bed last night and of course this happens. Listening to it inow. Wow.

Can't wait for HDD's projection Gonna be massive. 600k

I think the inspirations of this album will be lost on a lot of white people because they don't have a good understanding of the history of soul and jazz records

So, all those "Pac's still alive" conspiracy theories were right, I guess. Maybe he was there all the time and Suge just couldn't see him.

Mortal Man is beautiful, damn.

This is going to take awhile to sink in. I have no idea what to think after first listen. Such a huge change in direction from GKMC...not that it's a bad thing, just really unexpected

Cliffy B?

Slept on it and giving it a couple spins now. This is just something else, I don't really know how to put it. I was worried after hearing "i" for the first time, but Kendrick pulled it out. He doesn't give a fuck about singles or features or any of that shit, this music in the purest form.

Ima cosign the hype about Mortal Man. Holy fuck is that a well composed, well executed track. And the last few seconds of it...wow. That shit sank in.

I think you're underestimating that my man

jazz is essentially America's greatest contribution to music

I mean, I'm white. then again I've been a music lover since my inception and went to college in one of the cradles of jazz music (Charleston). so I don't know.

::shrugs::

This might be off the mark, but this album feels like Kendricks Bitches Brew. It's an album that's going to take multiple listens to get through to the genius.

Way to go people, misinterpret my post for the sake of misinterpretation

What I meant was that GKMC sounds more like it was made with the typical "receive beat -> write text/think of text -> record -> next one" structure than TPAB does. To me, TPAB sounds like it was made with much more care and with much more people involved.

I'm not saying rappers are not musicians, that's just Courage trying to derail my post because I don't like Young Thug and Rich Gang in general

Did Flying Lotus collab at all on this album? There are a lot of similar vibes.

This album pleases me greatly as I thought the Kendrick+Flylo collab on "Never Catch Me" was fantastic and had wanted them to work together some more.

He produced Wesley's Theory. He gave Kendrick a bunch of beats that he recorded to but didn't make the album.

dat ending

"The caterpillar is a prisoner to the streets that conceived it
Its only job is to eat or consume everything around it, in order to protect itself from this mad city
While consuming its environment the caterpillar begins to notice ways to survive
One thing it noticed is how much the world shuns him, but praises the butterfly
The butterfly represents the talent, the thoughtfulness, and the beauty within the caterpillar
But having a harsh outlook on life the caterpillar sees the butterfly as weak and figures out a way to pimp it to his own benefits
Already surrounded by this mad city the caterpillar goes to work on the cocoon which institutionalizes him
He can no longer see past his own thoughts
He’s trapped
When trapped inside these walls certain ideas start to take roots, such as going home, and bringing back new concepts to this mad city
The result?
Wings begin to emerge, breaking the cycle of feeling stagnant
Finally free, the butterfly sheds light on situations that the caterpillar never considered, ending the eternal struggle
Although the butterfly and caterpillar are completely different, they are one and the same."

What’s your perspective on that?
Pac, Pac...
Pac?

Thundercat brought some of those vibes

Yeah aside from a few songs in it, the bulk of GKMC felt a lot like young Kendrick. TPAB feels more grown up, like he's found his own sound and it's great. Love the soul and funk influences.

I've never loved Kendrick so my opinion doesn't mean much, but I'm not really a fan of this. Kendrick sounds awkward on most of these tracks to me and his already weird voice is made worse to me by all the high pitched goofiness and vocal effects. And those interludes. Holy shit are they bad.

Mortal Man and How to Change a Dollar are great tracks, though. And I kinda like Momma too.
