Kotaku: Concord budget was $200M which did not include marketing, the sale of IP rights or the acquisition of the studio

Interesting. You think that one of the Halo games might have been higher? Or Suicide squad? I hadn't asked about that from anyone.
The sources all said 400 for just game was for sure wrong. But I didn't ask about other titles. Your talking a percentage right? Like even a small game like Phoenix rising?

Yes, both of those games were in development hell with tons of workers and none of them had GaaS longevity. While Concord and FW were shut down, 343 was effectively rebranded with major leadership changes. Rocksteady also had similar departures.

Microsoft has Halo brand value so they don’t want to just shut it down, but the financial losses throughout the years may have been greater

damage control in da house

No, just correctly reporting. Details actually matter

...I am talking about a single game. Is that what you are talking about?

There is a reason everyone in blockbuster Hollywood movies is hot. Nobody wants to look at an eyesore. I’m not even saying you need to make a coomer bait game like The Last Descendant to sell your GaaS. Even Blizzard walks the tightrope really well with Overwatch. Nobody wants to play with aggressively ugly characters. It really boggles my mind that this game made it all the way to the finish line and nobody stepped in like “what the fuck are you guys doing”.

Across all of gaming right now, no adults are in charge. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

Yes. I suspect many of those games actually cost more to develop (even if they had higher sales), to see what was the greater failure you’d need to net out that amount.

We’ll never get concrete numbers but they’re all massive bombs.

True. Exact numbers would only be known if we get another leak of some kind usually. The leaks SUCk but they did destroy a lot of gamer myths. Which I sort of love.

Right on cue here comes James with his “wHaT aBoUt HaLo?!” white knighting bullshit that he’s pulled in every single Concord flop thread.

Give it a fucking rest. You looked like a clown before, now you just look like the whole damn circus.

Doesn’t matter if some of them had higher costs, the loss can still be greater
Maybe stop flip-flopping?

This was you.

According to…?
So you’re asking for proof, but won’t provide any yourself. Unless you can prove those games lost more money than Concord, it’s the biggest known flop of all time. You can’t go asking for evidence but provide none on your end.

So those 400 million cost may ends up true, truly fuck hirman hulst and those cunts at sony management who closed London studio (which have true ambitious project with new current gen only engine) and spend 400 million in bullshit unknown studio project

So the initial budget was 200mil in 2018. I assume once covid hit, a huge portion of work wasn’t done while Sony continued to pay people for doing nothing with PPP funds. Add the transition to working from home, big salary raises due to inflation, and expensive outsourcing, I can’t see it getting close to 400mil.

Even at the more true 200. Its a massive massive loss. And is up there for sure. I don't know which is first, I don't know if anyone ever will. But 200 million is insanely high especially with a complete closure and removal of the game.
Also not at all surprising. Even when we discussed financials a bit with the Vermintide guys and others on the podcast. The amount games are increasing is crazy.

How long did Halo take to develop? How many employees, contractors, etc?

How much did it sell?

I am saying we can’t say Concord is the biggest flop of all time unless we know how other big title failures stack up when it comes to profit and loss.

And you insisted, repeatedly, that the budget could not possibly be $200 million and was probably closer to $50 million. You should probably sit this thread out man.

I put together a long analysis that suggested it cost $150-200M based on estimates of production timelines and headcount

It’s the biggest known flop of all time. Perhaps there are bigger that we’re unaware of, but why bring them up when we haven’t got the faintest idea? Unless you can point us to credible figures for Halo Infinite, discussing it really does nothing.

If you’re happy thinking Halo Infinite lost more money because we don’t know the financials behind it, go right ahead.

We don’t know the cost, so we cannot say.

You apparently do know, so please post the facts that show Concord is the greatest singular loss of any video game project ever adjusted for inflation?

This was the most logical next steps. Why would they spend even more retooling and re-designing this game.
Feel bad for the developers that had to be put down for the incompetence of their leaders.

It’s the biggest known one. You can’t take solace in the fact that the others may or may not have bombed as hard. I just know that if the situations were reversed and we knew Halo’s numbers and not Concord’s, you’d happily proclaim Halo as the biggest flop of all time and ask anyone to prove otherwise.

You have zero receipts

So Colin Moriarty figure wasn't actually insane at all? Holy shit, if these figures are true I can't see anything other a massive overvaluation

Biggest flop we know of. Find me those Halo Infinite receipts or GTFO.

We don’t know, that’s my entire point. Unless you provide a factual list of the top 10 losses of all time and Concord is number 1

I never claimed halo was a bigger loss or suicide squad. Or Star Wars, or black flag

Until we have an actual profit and loss statement on these titles, we simply do not know

How the hell you buying a studio and give it 200 million, without seeing any game and the quality studio management ? Yes, i'm talking to you Hermen.

The game was already in development when they bought it. They’d have been shown a demo.

On paper, it fit the bill for the Live Services push.

I ain't even gonna lie, my man Colin was dead on the money and I stood tall in that thread were everybody was like "nah, it aint' 400m but it's a shitton" nah it was 400m and at the time yall scared me into being timid about that shit but I said it. If you read I bet you remember. I was the guy who said a rich city causes costs to be endless for the development studio. Yep, 400m I bet after all said and done. Colin redeemed.
