Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

Wasn't there a rumor that MS had more than one devkit setup out there? Maybe one with 8GB DDR3 and one with 4GB GDDR5 that could have seen a bump to 8GB GDDR5? Could have sworn I read that (the different approaches). Maybe I dreamt it.

Account bets are awesome.

If real this would be one of the biggest leak trolls on the Internet.

If the new Xbox has GDDR5 I will pee on the floor.

Actually, i hope it does, so mutiplatform games will be able to use full advantage of it.

Oh, I'm waiting...as patiently as possible...but I have my fears from the rumors.

I wouldn't fear, even if the rumors are true... The rumored machine is something like 6-8 times more powerful than the 360. No matter which way you slice it, it's going to have some amazing looking games. Just look at the latest batch of current gen games and think about the hardware they were made with.

The PS4 may have a simpler approach to its hardware design, but that won't necessarily make it the better way. It remains to be seen, and we can only judge based on the games.

There's a lot of interesting things in the VGLeaks documents (assuming they are true) that provide clues if you piece them together.

For example, if you look at the overall memory bandwidth, it is at 170 GB/s, barely lower than the PS4. It does require additional work from the developer, but developers are clever beasts, and it's not a totally new crazy thing that they've never dealt with before. If developers are still having trouble getting perf, the easiest knob for any developer to turn is the resolution. That reduces the size of all of your frame buffers, which makes it faster to send across to the GPU. MS has apparently thought about this scenario with the use of display planes. Even if a developer has to reduce the frame buffer from 1080p to 960p (making up numbers), they can use the secondary display plane to still display all of the UI and text at full 1080p so everything still looks really crisp. And honestly, unless you're digital foundry counting pixels, I don't think most people would even know there's a difference that the game frame buffer is not full 1080p (and honestly, I still expect there to be a lot of games at the start running at 720p on both platforms). I can't tell which resolution any of the current gen games are running at for example, and I still think a lot of them look gorgeous. It's just something I don't think about.

It's totally possible that there was a hardware change though, but it just seems so unlikely considering they're a matter of months from manufacturing these boxes and they need to be fully tested.

11 more days until (hopefully) all will be revealed!

this is how i feel.

It's getting warm in here. 'Member of Blizzard leaking' rumors article incoming.

It gets even more believable when he's admitted to working at Blizzard as a cinematic animator in the past.

Yeh, our guys did an awesome job on the Wrathgate cinematic! Glad you guys are digging it. :D
You speak it like you represent Blizz?
Guessing he works with one of the groups that makes fan-made movies using the engine. Obviously one of the better groups that now gets commissioned by Blizzard to do official vids for them.
Nope, I actually am at Blizzard. I am a fan, and I do help to create the movies, so I guess you can say I help to create fan-made movies :lol

And he's posted that he's attended Blizzcon events as a developer and is allowed into the E3 showfloor:

Blizzcon 2008 thread:

star 2 panel starting soon! Show is kick ass so far!! Can't wait for everyone to see new cinematic!!!!!! Hope you guys like it!!

Blizzcon 2009 thread:

See ya guys there! :D I'll be happy to autograph anything you like :lol

E3 2012 showfloor impressions thread:

I'll give an account of what I see tomorrow. Most likely the bottom of many a beer bottle :P

E3 2012 announcement thread:

I'll be there, just like every year. I plan to drive my car, like always :)

And there are other posts that hint at him being a member of the games industry / animator, have friends who work in studios, etc.

Wasn't the PS4's 8 GB of RAM a surprise to everyone outside of Sony until the uneveil?

That has been explained already a couple of times. This was possible because Sony's design allowed it. They just had to use memory chips with higher densities. It's very different with Microsoft's design, they can't do much to improve it without radically changing processors/other parts, which takes a lot of time to do. And we probably would have seen leaks if they did that, because it isn't a last minute change.

Thank you for explaining. I guess we'll all find out on the 21st.

That sounds awful, utterly utterly awful.

Wow, hmmm, he could just be BSing everyone though.

Look at the footage of Watch Dogs on PS4.

You think a 1.2TFLOP GPU, 8GB DDR3 + ESRAM, and a copy pasta of the PS4 CPU is enough to deliver smooth gameplay like the PS4 version?
Probably. Watch_Dogs isn't too impressive graphically. We've only seen it on PC at "next gen specs" anyway. Since it's cross gen I expect it to be very similar on both next gen systems. We won't see much of a difference until games are built from the ground up for next gen.

I am sorry, but you are downplaying the spec differences a little bit too much. It's not 170GB/s for the whole RAM. It's 8GB with 68GB/s and 32MB with 102GB/s. You can use them both at the same time, but it's clearly not the same as if you had 8GB with 176GB/s. Then there is the rumor about the amount of reserved RAM/CPU cores, which seems to be another disadvantage for the Xbox (~5GB RAM and 6 cores available for games with the Xbox, ~7GB and 7 cores for the PS4). And the PS4 has not just an easier design, but also 50% more processing power, if the rumors are true. And that will result in differences, which can be noticed not only by Digital Foundry. Don't want to kill your excitement, and it does not mean the games will look "bad", but the specs are unfortunately not that great. I hope that at least the games are good.

I like how his posts get progressively disenchanting.

2008= Yay! See you guys at BlizzCon! Soo excited!

2012= whatever. I'll be there as always. Driving there as always.

I do, while the 720 might not be as strong as the ps4, I believe they can pull that off.

Wow, hmmm, he could just be BSing everyone though.

at that time, I dont think so, he could not "win" anything from 2008+, now since there are leaks of the next-box, he would want the 15 mins of fame. Since everything appoints for 8 GDDR5 at least if he is "blizzard employee", I will go with #teamgddr5 for now. Hope by Monday there is a big leak, also as mention by Reiko numbers doesn't add since the leaks always mention ddr3, changing things late on the game could be really hard.

I think he does not necessarily need deep knowledge of specs if he is primarily working on animations for the cinematics. Maybe he is really just guessing.

Or maybe he just heard from other devs in the industry. That's how most leaks happen.
