As for Civ V, there's a lot of mods like terrain mods, different technologies, different civilizations. My favorite mods are Play The World and Play Europe. There are many more.

If you dig long enough basically any PC game can be modded, it's exciting and overwhelming. Even Doom was modded, it's simply amazing.
My gaming laptop is terribly outdated but GOG alone has given an enormous backlog of quality gaming, I really don't even feel the need to upgrade, modern games have failed to catch my interest.
Most old games don't really have active modding support anymore though so if you have the Steam version of System Shock you have to do a lot of folder moving first to get them working, and there could still be issues even then. The only old games I can think of with a big modding community with tons of new stuff still coming out for it are Morrowind and maybe CS 1.6.Welcome to the superior experience

Again almost anything is possible, this is the internet after all. I do remember the Sims 2 community went to insane lengths to mod muscular bears and the like into the game, and I mean insane, Sims 3 and 4 should be no different.

I had a similar guy in Oblivion and loved it.. having to carefully figure-out how to navigate the world, running for my life, jumping up to safe spots, stopping to pick ingredients for potions, etc etc.

Tradtitionally I'd never entertain the thought of using anything but Windows but for some reason 8.1 hates my display driver enough that my computer has a 50% chance of crashing on startup.
