Time for America to act like people care about the overall medal tally rather than simply who wins the most gold?

China got you guys beat, sorry.

Bitch please, allowing 12 year olds to do gymnastics and forging their birth records puts a big fat asterisk on China.

America doesn't need to cheat unlike other loser countries.

The Olympics are, by far, my favorite sporting events. I would gladly give up all other sports for a year if it was the only way I could watch the Olympics. I love all the obscure, small sports that never get any coverage at any other time and really couldn't care less about sports (basketball, soccer) that get the limelight in other venues.

USA! USA! USA!

Is anyone in London or visiting London attending some of the games? I'm heading over from Dublin for a few days in the first week and will be seeing some early rounds of boxing and a weightlifting final. I'm keeping my fingers cross to get a ticket for swimming while I am over there.

Speaking of boxing, go on Katie Taylor! Smash those other women to bits and bring home the gold!

Also I seem to be one of the few people who like the mascots, although it's mainly because of how warped they look along with the (un?)intentional comparisons to security cameras.

So so so excited. Go USA!!

Sucks that I'm probably gonna miss some stuff cause of work, but I'll try to keep up with what I can ;3

Great op. Great and easy schedule to read. My 3 week vacation starts with the oylmpics, coincidence??? :)

Love watching all the "smaller" sports that you usually never hear anything about unless it's the Olympics.

Sadly, Sweden does not have all that many medal hopes this time. But will be fun cheering them on.

WTF is this shit? The female outfits looks particularly awful....especially with the damn jacket. (and before I get too involved....what exactly are these outfits even for? lol)

Also, football to start a full two days ahead of the open ceremonies? LOL, OK?

And I can't WAIT for the opening ceremonies....especially to see if London can top China....which is a HUGE ask.

Nationalism does nothing but teach you how to hate people that you never met. And all of a sudden you take pride in accomplishments you had no part in whatsoever, and you brag about

First thing I thought of after glancing at page 1, so without further ado

I don't think they will. I was expecting Germany and South Africa to top Korea/Japan World Cup opening just because it was more recent, and they didn't come close. They went for something more subtle that reflected their countries culture and history, which may be the same for London this year. Plus, to top china here is even harder.

Egidio Arévalo doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Guy was beasting at Tijuana.
and what's that about the group? we goin for the gold
Uruguay versus Spain should have been the final two years ago. imo, both are the favourites this time around. Brazil may be full of stars and all, but Mano Menezes keeps proving he's an inept manager. And lol Great Britain.

We played the Spaniards yesterday and it was awful. :( But still, I'm pretty optimistic. This Mexican generation is the best we've had in forever and we play some very intelligent and attractive football. Mexico has never won a team medal before, so we better start demanding one out of the only team sport we put any real time and money on.

I know, but ive been awful lately. For some reason im barely watching any footie and just catching up on highlights and stuff, also watching half of our matches since I get way too anxious.

Spain has certainly been proving that they deserve every bit of that cup, should be interesting to watch them.

and yeah, I bet Uruguay is a big favorite now thanks to the WC + recent UEFA

I'm going to the beach volleyball preliminary rounds and men's semi final football at Wembley. Have I missed something or is it actually possible to get tickets on the day?

Working in Straford at the moment for a week (not Olympic Park) and it's amazing seeing it all come together but it is progressively getting busier

the rest of the world is horrible at basketball. plus we americans scoff and mock soccer.
A non-negligeable number of European players partake in the NBA. USA is still favorite of course but it isn't sealed in advance.

- You have no taste :|

- Not a remote chance haha. I doubt it will even be topped for the next 20 years or so.

There are some details about the Opening Ceremony posted in the London Olympic website. It's looking awfully quaint. Not a good idea to expect Beijing-level spectacle, I think.

And apparently they had to do some last minute cuts to the ceremony in order to finish at midnight.

I find it funny that in England it all about London and down South, How do they best show England to the world? by showing the North that South always making fun off maybe they show the farmers protest going on right now

Chris Hoy is still going? Or was he just not selected for the Sprints?

This documentary on Victoria Pendleton (uk cyclist and Olympic champion) was really interesting. Really looked at her emotional state and pressures when competing at world level. Iplayer so uk only, sorry

Looking forward to the BBCs coverage. They have 24 HD channels launching temporarily to cover everything, and they are showing select events in 3D (will record for curiosity)

Will the opening ceremony be able to resist doing the austin powers opening scene with cartwheeling policemen and beefeaters etc.

The BBC Olympic coverage is always incredible, and I have no doubt they are going to go up another level for London. Cannot wait!

Just the sprint. He's still defending two of his golds in the Team Sprint and Keirin. Kenny was the right choice for the sprints. He has been performing well in the run up to the games.

July 6th 2005. The second most important date that week for London.

Glastonbury Tor is not in the North.

There have been aerial photos.
The stage transforms.
Still not expecting Beijing-esque spectacle though. It had ~10x the budget.
