How does it work exactly ? Isn't the whole point of the Olympics to represent different nations ? And what hymn do they play for independent champions ?

They don't have an Olympic Committee in their country, so can't compete for their country. If they medal (unlikely) they'd play the Olympic Hymn and fly the olmypic flag.

a double amputee places second in qualifying round at the olympics. makes you pause for a moment and reflect on whatever excuse you have for not doing one thing or another.

I know i will sound like a prick but i'm not sure i really feel comfortable with them letting him compete. I mean it's ok but i do wonder what happens if they are able to advance the tecnology for limb replacements to the point where they are better than normal athletes (i know it's a tiny issue that will never matter but i still think it's interesting).

It's for countries and islands that don't have any connections to Olympic Committees. This year the athletes are from Netherlands Antilles and South Sudan, the latter only coming into existence last year. It is only the third time independent athletes are competing, the other years being 1992 and 2000.
