The press is definitely the worst for it, but I've seen plenty of British people on here and on other websites rooting for whoever he's playing against.

I've never actually met anyone for real that doesn't root for him and in real life only ever heard the British/Scottish thing mentioned as a joke

As a side note doesn't look like the andymurrayometer has updated in days, maybe they've finally given up on it too

Actually thinking back I think some people are still upset when he said something about cheering for anyone but England in the World Cup, which he said he was just joking about but to be fair he's Scottish of course he would cheer against England just like most English people would cheer against Scotland in football.

It was definitely a joke, he was with Henman at the time doing some interview but the tabloids as usual took the quote out of context and made out that he hated England.

For years he came across as a miserable, lanky streak of piss. if he's mellowed out now i don't care and don't wanna know.

I'm not interested in tennis so that helps too i guess.

He's a sportsman, and for once there's a good British tennis player. I don't care if he's charismatic or not, he's not a television presenter.

And the x number of countries who use Russian or Ex Soviet coaches.

Coaches don't get the recognition they deserve. Another example, the two Chinese who won today's Race Walk are coached by Sandro Damilano, an Italian who in the past guided Italy to an Olympic gold medal.

As a Scot I must say I have never seen this - That said I will always root for whoever england are playing against in football.

Looking forward for THE GREAT BRITISH BULLDOG #GREATESTTEAMEVER #TEAMGB

2 Tennis medals in the bag tomorrow.
Ben Ainslie will be trying to get a medal in the Finn tomorrow.
More Dominance in the Velodrome (Seriously, we would have all the Gold medals if the Girls didn't get DQ'd)

It won't be as good as today but man, these Olympics are going to be great for TeamGB.

Coaching I think is more important in the events that are not a race to the finish. Almost all the gymnasts for example can do all the moves but the ones that can do it consistently are the ones that rise to the top and that takes coaching. Race walk is probably similar in that over those huge distances, you need to approach the race with the right mentality to hold form for 20km.

Faults are faults, unfortunately there's no getting around that.

I know but the conversation was about the low quality of the competition in general. He was one of the few who was jumping far. I mean 8.12m was good enough for a medal when all 40 athletes in the field had to have jumped 8.10+ to even qualify for the Olympics.

To be fair we never get a chance to cheer against you properly these days as you never make it into any competitions...sorry I had to ;)

I've only really seen it on the internet as well, but I've seen plenty of it.

I'm Scottish as well, and I'll admit that we seem to be a lot more bitter/jealous of England than the other way around. But we're awful at almost everything, so we're allowed to be :P

As an English man, I always support the Home Nations.

Velodrome Action yet to come, Men's Omnium, Women's Omnium, Men's Keirin, Men's sprint & Women's Sprint. Hope we stay on top form

How quickly the Brits went from "Who cares about how many medals your country won, the Olympics are about watching great athletes" to "OMG LOOK HOW MANY MEDALS WE WON!! GB! GB! GB! TODAYS THE GREATEST DAY IN THE HISTORY OF GB!!"
I think a lot of us are just playing up to it. It's not often we have such major success to celebrate in sport so we're just marking out and having fun and enjoying it while we can.

this has to be australia's worst olympics in years, right? usually they are in the top 5 for medals and they're around 19 or something at the moment.

I mentioned it earlier in this thread but 3 Golds/5 million people puts us well up the golds/million population table.

Charisma and showmanship is half the battle to getting people enthralled, especially for people who might not otherwise be interested in the sport. That's why ennis is plastered all over the internet and papers tonight.

I'm not gonna root against the bloke but it's like....eh.

Ian Thorpe was pretty critical of the Australian swimmers on the bbc.

They haven't done much in the cycling either where they were suppose to be quite strong.

the BBC did a little piece on a nail salon near the park that's been overrun with athletes.

Apparently most of the female swimmers had their country's flag painted on their nails.
I had just noticed how nice the manicures are today. Whichever salon that is, it's very good. I love the designs a lot!

...which reminds me that I've yet to get my annual manicure/pedicure this year. Heh.

Part-schedule, mostly for tomorrow's GB hopes, from BBC:

ATHLETICS (21:50): Usain Bolt, men's 100m
There can be no question that Usain Bolt running the men's 100m final is the most eagerly awaited of Olympic events, but he might not have it all his own way after recent defeats by fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake and the memory of his false start at last year's World Championships. British medal hopes lie with Christine Ohuruogu in the women's 400m (21:10) and Yamile Aldama in the women's triple jump (19:35).

SAILING (14:00): Ben Ainslie, Finn class
Ainslie has been involved in a dramatic battle with Denmark's Jonas Hogh-Christensen all week and he goes into Sunday's decisive Finn medal race knowing a fourth gold medal is tantalisingly close. Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson might be a safer bet (13:00) for Britain having dominated the Star class.

TENNIS (Not before 12:00): Andy Murray, men's singles and mixed doubles
Murray returns to Centre Court for another crack at Roger Federer just four weeks after losing the Wimbledon final to the Swiss star, and as in Grand Slams the Olympic final will also be played over five sets. Murray could end the day as a double Olympic champion as he then teams up with Laura Robson to play Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka in the mixed doubles final.

TRACK CYCLING (10:00-18:47): Ed Clancy, men's omnium
Clancy will start the second and final day of the multi-discipline omnium in fourth place after winning the flying lap, finishing 11th in the points race and fifth in the elimination race on Saturday. With his stronger events to come in the individual pursuit (10:00), scratch race (17:01) and time trial (18:16), a medal is a real possibility.

GYMNASTICS (15:41): Louis Smith, apparatus finals
Smith won bronze on the pommel horse in Beijing and is a candidate for gold in London after finishing top in qualification with one of the most difficult routines in the world. Dan Purvis could also feature - and win a medal - in the floor final (14:00).

BOXING (13:30-16:26): GB women
Women's boxing makes its Olympic debut with three excellent British medal hopes in the shape of Nicola Adams, Natasha Jonas and Savannah Marshall.

OTHER GB TEAMS IN ACTION
Basketball women v Brazil 22:15, Handball women v Croatia 16:15, Hockey men v Australia 19:00, Volleyball women v Japan 14:45, Water Polo women v Spain (20:20).

Race walk is probably similar in that over those huge distances, you need to approach the race with the right mentality to hold form for 20km.

Especially when your country doesn't know shit about a sport, taking a great coach can change things radically and fast (if you have a big pool of athletes where to search for), because he knows how to advice you with training regimes etc. If I recall correctly Chinese Race walkers in the past were often expelled during the races because they committed a lot of errors in their walking, probably the Italian coach corrected that.

Ian Thorpe was one of the greatest additions to the BBC team this Olympics. It's a shame the swimming is over now, he really was great.

Yeah I understand. Hell I'm American, if we win a pissing contest the rest of the world is going to hear about it. I was just pointing out the hypocrisy from earlier when everyone was downplaying the importance of the medal counts.
