I don't think Clancy's chances in the TT is the issue - I think it's that he needs his rivals to do worse than they realistically will do.

They go slow at first because it wouldn't make any sense to shoot out at full speed and then become burnt out in the final laps, conserve your energy and then do that final sprint is the best way

If you go fast too soon, the rider can just get in your slipstream, which means they get to use 30% less energy.

I don't think Clancy's chances in the TT is the issue - I think it's that he needs his rivals to do worse than they realistically will do.

Looking at the scores if he wins, which he's expected to, and one of the top 3 comes in 6th or worse he'll get a medal (I think).

Point I was trying to make was that there is still hope because of how good he is in the last event but yes, as you say, it comes down to the other riders.
