So Phelps has 19 medals now/most ever, great accomplishment but Phelps' arrogance and lack of enthusiasm really undercut it IMHO. Interesting perspective as to why he didn't exactly light it up this time to put it mildly from teammate Tyler Clary who earlier this month bluntly said what we all knew: Phelps is bored/boring and lazy:

where does this guy get off talking trash?

end of discussion.

The same people who hate Michael Phelps are the same guys who hate Barry Bonds, Tiger Woods and Lebron James because they're just not "endearing" enough in the eyes of the media. For all you know Lochte could be the biggest cocksucker in the world but his public persona is "American bad boy".

Sorry, but when I watch an athlete perform I'm not looking for how well he speaks to the media, I'm watching because they're supremely talented people doing what they do best. All this "I like Lochte more because he wears a diamond grill and totally has swag" stuff is total nonsense. They're both American athletes and should be treated as equals.

So much truth in this statement that it hurts

Out of all the sports I've watched this Olympics, beach volleyball, woman's hockey, and the woman's road race have been the most exciting.

Volleyball is so much better with rally scoring.

I remember going to my sister's volleyball matches when I was a kid. Those games would go on for ages.

I think a lot of the hate toward Phelps is because of how much the media shoved him down people's throats in the last Olympics and in this one. It just became tiresome and people actually started to want to see him lose, even if they're American. That will happen with a lot of athletes. We eventually saw that with someone like Brett Favre. He was well liked by the public, but through a combination of his own actions and the medias constant "HE'S JUST A KID ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD!" bullshit, people just started to grow tired of him and the media's obsession with him.

Since they announced they are selling more tickets, been constantly looking for beach volleyball tickets.

Managed to get male GB 'normal' volleyball tickets and going to watch the time trials tomorrow as it passes through my town.

I've always hated how they refer to Phelps as the "Greatest Olympian in history".

In stats, sure, but there really isn't such a thing.

Also U.S. needs a new "hero" , that happens with all athletes. Media needs new faces so people keep interested in viewing thier shows.

negative propaganda againts Phelps sells more so for the media is so much better that Phelps wins a silver medal instead of gold.

Media makes you a "god" and then you become garbage to them ; Phelp is in the garbage stage right now.

Not really, like I said it just sucks to lose on a serving error not that they get a point when possession changes. Just my opinion obviously.

Well, you still have to win by two points, so it's not like you'll ever have a situation where you're tied with a single point left and then you lose because you borked the serve.

Not like that here at all I don't think, we really respect and love our olympians who go back and try for more golds.

Ya, just a disappointing end though a couple games were close games of 19/20 and the other team trying to tie it up hits the net with the serve and they wont 21/19. Just a disappointing end to a good game.

I know , but I am tlaking about the Media not the people.

Most of the news about Phelp these days are more related with his behavior as simple person than his achivements in the pool.

Yeah, matches have been more faster with the new system, not only in total playing time, but pace too. And it was a way to get more volleyball on TV.

Yeah I disagree. He put himself in the garbage stage by his poor work ethic and controversies.

There are countless athletes who have remained beloved by the media their entire careers and even post careers. Especially Olympians.

For us Brits worried about Team GB's lack of gold

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19068087

'Great Britain's Olympic chiefs insist they are not worried about the lack of Team GB gold medals so far at London 2012.

They say key medal opportunities are expected later this week in events such as rowing, track cycling and sailing.

"There's no sense at all among the team that we're not delivering," said British Olympic Association chef de mission Andy Hunt.

"We are about where we expected to be at this stage of the competition.

"As it always is for Team GB at a Games, it's really as we come in towards the end of the first week that we start to see our opportunities really ramp up in those traditional sports where we tend to excel. "

Honestly dude probably doesn't have much else left to accomplish. And I agree with the quoted, ESPN loves to tear down an icon or rather "what is wrong with so and so?"

They do with Tiger every fucking time e lsoes and then hops back on his pipe wen he wins ("is tiger back yo?"), and They did it with LeBron last season.

When you it star status, they basically make sure that you are always a source for a story...good or bad. They don't care.

Comes with the territory.

Personally, I have no beef with Phelps. He's proven himself enough.

Have they done that with Phelps? I haven't watched much ESPN since the Olympics started, so i'm not sure what their coverage has been like. I know that i've checked First Take a few times, but they're always talking about Tebow (which means that I instantly turn the channel). It doesn't really seem like the media on NBC's coverage is making a big deal out of his losses. If he loses then they pretty much just ignore the event afterwards.

Yeah, the Olympics is a pretty broad competition so saying that is a bit silly. Sure, the guy racks up plenty of medals in Swimming but that is still only one event (no matter how many variations there are). Show me someone who can master multiple events in the Decathlon like Britain's Daley Thompson and I'll consider them to be a top-tier Olympian.

Canada also has an Olympian who has gotten medals in road cycling in the Summer games and Speed skating in the winter games.
