LTD (Aligned) PS5 75.0 M Profit $12B; PS4 76.7 m, Profit $4B | 9.5M PS5 units sold in Q3 FY24

We´re watching Playstation eat the piece of the pie Microsoft is no longer trying to hold on to.
On one side it`s nice to see something outside of the usual doom and gloom from the industry on the other hand we`re pretty much watching a new quasi monopoly hatching here which usually sucks for us customers in the long run.

For a little perspective, that “missed” target from last year’s FY ends up being a blip on the radar……along with Concord.

Going forward, the last thing anyone should do is doubt the selling power of PlayStation as a brand. It’s earned those accolades.

GTA VI is going to be about as massive as it gets for PS5 console sales!

And said the same thing above, i dont see any goalposts moving

As i said, it seems sony cant break that home console barrier. I dont get the snarky celebratory tone in this thread. Not in terms of reaching bigger audiences or creating new gaming experiences

The "snarky celebratory tone" is about great PS5 sales numbers while we've had this gaslighting narrative that console sales are "plummeting" when in reality that is only true for Xbox.

They now have more monthly active users than ever before, and 42% of people who bought a PS5 were new users. So they are absolutely reaching bigger audiences.

I don't think I've ever opened GAF to witness this much crying.

Some people on this forum have really fooled themselves in to believing some absolute nonsense in the past few months. How impressionable so you you need to be to believe IGN's paid shills and a few manipulated polls (along with the accompanying not so "organic" posts) on this forum are reflective of the situation taking place in the real world?

All you have to ask yourself is this - why are the same people who are hellbent on lambasting PS5 the same people begging for Sony to do "day and date" on PC? If it were as bad as these people claim then why would they even want the games that they claim don't exist to be "day and date"?

At some point people will learn to decipher what is in front of your faces, this kind of nonsense has been going on for well over a decade now. You think they'd get the memo that it's not working and never has, but alas, those of us who wish to have conversations about the gaming industry in online spaces must continue to wade through this crap as long as a certain company are involved in the industry. I don't envy the Linux bro's, they've been through it for much longer.

I see Dench is still at it. Truly showing who/what he’s about and anyone wanting a serious discussion regarding anything PlayStation related needn’t waste their time.

As for the results, predicted, so all I have to do is brush off the stench of Dench from my shoulders. 😉
And he will spin as much, if not more, in the MS thread, just to the opposite side, and still pretend to be "neutral" lol

On topic. That's an incredible quarter for PlayStation. Lots of awesome games,1st and 3rd party, with many more on the way. Great times ahead.
As much as I still hate Sony for portimg exclusives to Pc and very few new exclusives. But its till impressive. PS brand is really is a pop culture. Fans are very loyal and patient and surprising there are many new ps5 owners. 4 more years for ps5 and ps5 pro to go. Ps5 pro will evolve and learn more, and ps5 base might soon have price cut which will really put them ahead for good onwards to ps6.

Really great quarter from Sony, and there’s still two big second wind spikes to come - GTA 6 and an expected price cut later in the life of the console.

They’ve certainly made all the right moves this gen. I don’t even agree with the doom and gloom about software. There’s a lot of stuff to play, and more and more games coming out.

Key expansion market might also be China. They’re focusing a lot of effort there in developer outreach. Massive population + booming economy.

Sony do need to sit down with their games studios and basically work out the strategy going forward. Seems quite a few games cancelled and some studios shuttered.

What the hell is this BS Man, GAF told me that the PS5 is fukin Doomed.

That's xbox fluffers - misery loves company...

EDIT :

Actually there is a little more to it than that. The stuff we read here on Gaf and most of the English language news around videogames is heavily biased to the US market.

But for the gaming market, what happens in the USA isn't relevant outside the US. Xbox has crashed yes - but it's a crash that most gamers worldwide didn't notice or care about. The gaming market is like sports - yes American sports are wildly popular in the US, and largely ignored everywhere else, and gaming seems to follow that model.

So the consoles doomed stuff, is coming from one current example - Xbox. Yes it's an important example because the US remains the single biggest gaming market but it is still just one market. The xbox brand is kind of toxic though and that bleeds through to its media and some consumers - they would rather see everything about the hobby fail, than accept the market has chosen a different path.

Hardware?

It will stick around. Doesn’t looks like a priority to them to sell gangbusters.

Not sure what goes into selling huge no of hardware. It sure isn’t related to just one thing.
You do realize Xbox is heavily reliant on GamePass and GamePass is heavily reliant on Xbox hardware sales, right?

Because GamePass isn't really taking off on PC at all and Xbox hardware is dead, so there is no growth there.

To make it worse, given sales and revenue data, Xbox itself is heavily reliant on Playstation.

The Playstation numbers are incredible, 9.5 million consoles sold this quarter, 20.2 million during 2024 (second year that passes 20 million and this year GTAVI...), 96 million games sold this quarter, brutal increase in profits, etc... it is absolutely incredible how when the numbers come out the entire negative narrative created around PS5 is destroyed, here we are missing users who were very interested in Sony's figures a few days ago.

So its just going to collapse then?

Nice fantasy.

Of course it's not.

Who really thinks a bunch of regular people are going to go and build living room PC's (which require meticulous planning to get the cooling and noise aspects under control in smaller form factors) instead of just buying a Playstation to play exactly the same games?

So its just going to collapse then?

Nice fantasy.

What are you talking about? It already collapsed.

I don't think that's fair on dench seems like a decent fella to me.
After reading through that exchange, just seems like a difference in opinion to me, don't feel like he's purposely trolling or anything.
I think he was wrong mind you

Keep in mind this is "Sell In" (Shipped to retailers) not "Sell through" (Bought by consumers)

Maybe Sony stuffed the US Channel a bit instead of dialing it back down, cuz, you know?
You'll find out next quarter. If next quarter shipments are decent (3 to 4 million) then they didn't, but if they are subpar (2.5 million or lower) then they probably did.

I once thought as you do. The problem goes far beyond that exchange, however. He picks and chooses when he wants to pretend to be an ally and full blown partisan. Trust me, plenty of us have tried with him.

The latest stuff just shows it’s all an act and always has been! He would have gotten full respect had he just admitted he was wrong and gave credit where due.

Because the thread isn’t about him, I don’t want/need to drag it out any further. I’d just say reserve benefit of the doubt for those who truly deserve it.

Eh....I'm all for giving a guy the benefit of the doubt, but not when he is shown to be wrong and moves the goalposts instead of simply admitting he was wrong. And when you see it repeated enough times, you come to realize when someone is just full of shit.

Doesn’t matter. To Sony, it’s a sale and those shipped devices will be in consumers’ hands at some point anyway.

No way to spin this negatively.

What goal posts did I shift?

I attempted to explain why these questions are coming up. That when investors etc look at the overall tam of console gaming. Sales are falling and software sales are falling.

Sony is doing extremely well but these bean countera don't care. I wasn't defending igns plummeting sales comments. I was in complete disagreement of those.

I think, just being completely honest, that it can feel that when you have a different opinion that the pile on can happen and I admit I get defensive and maybe not explain myself too well.

Not asking for anyone to believe me and I'm all for having your opinions of me. That's fine. I know what I mean deep down.

I honestly think most of it is lost in translation in text and I'm trying my best to improve my posting but yeh. Just trying to add some clarity to it.
