It's My Life - Day 47
The story continues with its positive but still bittersweet point of view on life, which is nice because it means it's actually commited to move things forward instead of cherishing the status quo, but at the same time is a bit sad since everything points towards Astra and Noah's time together coming to an end sooner rather than later.

TWGOK - Ch 250-251
Keima now having to check some more boxes to make sure the timeline he's in doesn't diverge from the one he came from isn't all that interesting, now.

I honestly don't get why you guys are so obsessed with the fluffiest yuri you can find. It's more often than not romanticized and vapid fluff aimed at horny men in a country where actual gay people are oppressed as hell and justified on the theory that young homosexuality is some kind of phase.

It's the same reason I was pissed off at the plot twist in Fuuka where Mikasa turned out to be straight - the idea that you just "grow out" of being gay and return to heteronormative conforming values seems completely off to me.

If a country is still pretty backwards towards gay rights, what does looking down upon inoffensive stories of gay relationships achieve? I don't get your position. While I wouldn't call the manga industry some all-powerful weapon in the battle of rights for minorities, positive depiction in media, in this case manga, is always good for building up acceptance in the mainstream consciousness. Not to mention, the vast majority of the so-called vapid yuri stories you're criticizing don't play off homosexuality as some sort of phase, but just as a pure-hearted love between girls.

Maybe read better series than Fuuka, or anything by the hack Seo Kouji. I suggest My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness and Our Journey to Lesbian Motherhood, since you seem to be invested towards the depiction of realistic lesbian relationships.

She's nice, but a bit too late to the party.

Hoshino, Me o Tsubutte. ch26-30

Kanou is the best addition to the cast so far. Too bad she's not the main heroine.

Tomo-chan wa Onna no ko! ch605

Misuzu is probably recording this conversation.

Aho Girl ch81

Well, Yoshiko is rather obsessed with love, so on that front she did a passable job.

I'm not sure how you could not understand my position without being willfully ignorant. It's not a difficult argument to unpack.

If your position is "Hurr durr horny nerds", then I agree, you'd need a good measure of willful ignorance to take it.

Otherwise, just enjoy the fun stories, or let others enjoy it, alright? They're harmless, I promise.

Mousou Telepathy 417

Oh god. We're at this part. Will pick this back up after this arc is over.
What is it with this series and random tone shifts that makes me feel like I missed a couple dozen chapters? What the fuck

It's bad enough that the whole Mana thing made me confused as fuck but now we're getting an entire arc like this? Fuck this, I'm out

Alien 9

I think this works the best if you don't know anything about it, so consider everything below kind of spoilers.

This story basically works as an example of a cool genre and tone shift. It starts with wacky scifi SoL with girls in rolling skaters catching little aliens, in fact it knows to wait a bit for the readers to get used to that style, for four or five chapters, and then it starts introducing mystery elements
(the teacher is also an alien? she is the one who is really requesting the 'alien attacks'?!! etc
and later the real tone shift starts,
when the girls start losing her humanity
. Well, I say tone shift, but in truth there is a slight surreal tone to the story that is maintained from the beginning to the end.
It has a very interesting use of in media res, where it isn't explained at the start the origin of the setting, it basically starts with the protagonist complaining of how icky are the aliens and how much it sucks to be in the alien party.

Alas, the mystery elements tease you, but in the end they only give the most briefest and incomplete of explanations, about
alien clans invading Earth since time ago and how humanity at this point just can try to choose which alien symbiont should fuse with
, never really going deep of how the world turned that way, which is a pity because it seems original.

Characterization-wise, It does a bit of subversion, as you expect at first for the protagonist to get a grip and start improving after some chapters, maybe when she has a real encounter where her life is in danger... but no, she never improves or matures. In fact as things grow larger in danger and scale, the mind break part starts. And they are in a situation where they only can 'move forward' so their solutions just make it worse. In that point the art style used and the fact they are small girls contribute in the jarring contrast to what's really happening in the story.

However the character growth stops at some point, when the supporting
characters fates is sealed as their decision to protect Yuri and her humanity.
At that point there is still a final arc with a new alien, a big conflict and a dramatic rescue but it's all a bit ehh, in true it's all very perfunctory,
nothing changes and their happy end is saving the princess and maintaining the status quo.

There is an interview with the author where he says

And well... while it's true he captures the 'alien' feel well and in that sense it feels science fiction, all the usage of the school setting, the little girls, the surreal tone, it's all very Japanese. Sorry Mr. Author!

As proof of how Japanese it is, have some sexual innuendo with lolis!
Or the following scene where the weird alien tries to merge with Yuri by stalking her by night and trying to drop his spit/sperm? into her mouth. Totally innocent!

But in a a way, this sexual creepiness is just another factor that contributes to the uneasiness you should feel while reading this manga. So feature, not a bug, I suppose.

Finally, I don't like the art. It isn't very detailed, I don't personally like the style, and even with the small group of characters I had problems sometimes to identify them.

I personally find Tomizawa's effort to make his artstyle fit in all these horror series quite commendable, lol. It's easily recognizable at least.

I mean, it's fine not to agree with an argument but the whole "pretending the argument is literally unintelligible" thing is disingenuous.

Probably because there's not much of an argument to begin with.
Except everyone else readily understood the idea that I felt like the genre is exploitative in a way that isn't true in countries where gay relationships are more accepted as a real life thing because homosexuality isn't just a random fetish.

You can just say that you don't agree without being disingenuous about what is being talked about;
it comes off more like you just don't want anyone to be critical of things you like. It's okay to discuss ideas on a message board. It's harmless, I promise.

I feel the same way about the garbage harem manga that tend to posted here from time to time. The shameless pandering, idiotic and repetitive plot contrivances, girls completely devoid of humanity, inherit sexism and main characters who are solely defined by their ability to facilitate self inserting make these manga unbearable for me. These stories are even worse than fluffy yuri, because while the fluffy yuri manga are total nonsense, the harem manga feed into the shitty otaku escapism that dominates that deny reality.

You should be pissed about Fuuka in general. It's total garbage.

I literally got pissed off about how they treated the gay character in it last week. And I don't disagree that a lot of stuff, even the stuff I read is exploitative in an uncomfortable way.

I realize I'm being a single issue voter; it's just that LGBT depiction in otaku culture has been bugging me.

I'm not saying you don't have a fair point, I'm saying exploitation of gay relationships in otaku culture is more specifically weird and uncomfortable for me.

Sorry to interject, halfway through a conversation no-less. But what are we saying when we say; Fluffy Yuri. Do you mean the cute, quaint ones, or am I missing something?

Also, on a completely different topic: For how much I really do not get on with Visual novel manga adaptions, I really do wish someone would've finished translating the Rose Guns Days manga. As it's probably the only Visual Novel adapted into manga that I've enjoyed.

Yeah, that's fair too. Everyone's got their own set of tolerances. But even though I personally abhor harem manga, I totally get why someone would want to read one. There's a very distinct appeal in reading that kind of story.

It's the exact same shit with fluffy yuri manga too. And I dunno, in a thread that's relatively relaxed and loose with manga (let's be honest, we read a lot of garbage), statements like "why do you like vapid fluff" feels entirely redundant. Especially when Aunt's Tits was a thing. (That manga sucked ass btw)

I think Aunt Tits is still a thing but doesn't get translated.

Attack on Titan

I feel like it's been literally the better part of a year since we saw what the actual cast is doing.

Oh wait that's because it is an we just get to see Reiner moping all day long and a ton of flashbacks that aren't actually as necessary as Isayama seems to think they are. At least not in this quantity.

Does that count as NTR?

Also I can't believe she's still thinking about having a trillion babies with him. She's completely compromised at this point.

Kotatsu Yuri (SFW short)

Love is like a kotatsu. They're both low, wooden tables covered by a futon and containing a heat source, formerly a charcoal brazier but now usually electric. I find thinking about how this couple fits into the Mochiverse to be more interesting then their banter.

Sorry to interject, halfway through a conversation no-less. But what are we saying when we say; Fluffy Yuri. Do you mean the cute, quaint ones, or am I missing something?
Fluffy yuri is a subset of furry yuri, typically involving animals with lighter body hair. It's generally frowned upon for its unrealistic depictions of romance between creatures that would usually be eating each-other's organs.

Disclaimer: I may have made that up.

Also Zweizer man, you're wasting your fingers on this uncultured heathen. Does this look like someone you can reason with?

I'm sure you aren't arguing that the mere portrayal of gay relationships in manga is exploitative and to be frowned upon. Frankly speaking, I find discouraging vapid gay stories in regressive countries to be counter-productive, as it's simply removing one positive kind, even if not particularily deep, of gay people's portrayal. There's no denying that there are exploitative works, like in every genre, but arguing that the entire genre is exploitative is a little silly. Not to mention, a lot of the fluffy yuri series (those that get frequently mentioned here at least)'s authors are women, and often lesbian women.

This answer by Erica Friedman from New York Anime Festival 2010 puts it best:

Attendee3: Does the GLBT community in Japan embrace yaoi and yuri manga?

Erica Friedman: Think of it this way: out of all of the people in the U.S., how many of them are comics fans? Not a lot. It's like that in Japan too. The lesbians who like manga are a very small part of the lesbian population, who are already a very small part of the Japanese population. So how do they feel about it? They like it lots. (laughs) If you want to find out more about it, follow my lesbian manga-ka list on Twitter.

Statements such as "I don't like fluffy yuri manga" are fine, statements such as "Fluffy yuri manga are exploitative trash and you guys should feel ashamed for liking them" are more than a little odd.

I honestly appreciate the whole Reiner section. It's giving us context and perspective of his nation of jackasses so that when Eren and Historia do end up showing up and wrecking shit, we'll have a better idea what this means for the world as a whole. That said, yeah this flashback is feeling kinda long, and I imagine we're literally going to go through all the way to after Reiner got his shit kicked in and Bertold eaten. Which at this pace.... like another 5 or 7 chapters?

Your initial example is Fuuka though, which while I haven't read as far as I know is a far cry from most works in the Yuri genre.
It'd probably make more sense if you used an example thats actually a Yuri manga.

That's not an example of that genre, just how I feel like gay issues are sometimes treated like a temporary disorder in manga in general.

I wouldn't disagree, but I'd also say you'd struggle to find an example of that in the vast majority of contemporary yuri manga. Even the ones that are specifically aimed at men.

Rurouni Kenshin 1-57 Tokyo arc
Enjoying this a lot. The four main characters are all great (though Kaoru could use a couple chapters more centered on her). The comedy works for me too. I was a little iffy on the Megumi arc, but it ended very strong. The art is very well done and I like a lot of the designs. I think my favorite moment of the series so far is Yahiko's farewell to Yutaro. Bittersweet but funny! Yahiko in general is hilarious but he gets some nice emotional beats too. If I had one complaint it's that I'm not into the who switch flip between Kenshin and Battasou. So hopefully when that comes up again I take to it better.

Feels like I should have tried to get a better understanding of the historical context, as that would help me appreciate some of the character dynamics better. But it's a lot to take in and I think I at leas have picked up the basics.

Set up for the Kyoto arc has been interesting so I'm looking forward to jumping into that.

I'd say you'd be less likely to find it in manga written by men really, the Class S genre is from an era where most yuri manga was written by women. It may not be the most conscientious portrayal of lesbian relationships anymore, but at the time it was probably a way of presenting them in a more palatable light to the general populace and part of the reason we're able to enjoy the variety of stories and authors we have in yuri now.
