Mario Kart Switch: all Wii U + new tracks, characters, battle mode, < 3 mos fr launch

And it will release within 3 months of launch.

<snip>

Splatoon packed in in deluxe model at launch
3D Mario Switch at launch
Skyrim at launch
MK within 3 months of launch
Zelda several months after launch
Smash at some point not at launch

</snip>

While that does sound pretty cool, on the other hand its a bunch of port that feels like a greatest hits version and is just too familiar...

Splatoon packed in in deluxe model at launch > PORT +bits
3D Mario Switch at launch > NEW!
Skyrim at launch > PORT +outdated
MK within 3 months of launch > PORT +bits
Zelda several months after launch > NEW! hopefully synced launch with wii u version
Smash at some point not at launch > PORT +bits

Four of those titles we've played and thrashed, and they want to give us a refreshed version with some new bits?
I'll reserved full judgement until Jan 12 when we find out more, but hearing this is more disappointing than exciting.

You have to consider a couple of things.

1) A lot of people did not own a Wii U and never played these games
2) Many Nintendo owners never played Skyrim
3) Nintendo has yet to announce the majority of launch titles

Fair enough.

Im just getting deja vu vibes from the Wii U's launch, and I dont want that to happen all over again.

I understand your concerns, but like you said we will learn more January 12th. Plus, none of these are official announcements, just leaks, so this isn't necessarily the way Nintendo wanted to present the lineup. Perhaps they'll focus just as much on brand new titles at the event and E3. I'm also going to repost something wrore earlier because I think it's pertinent to what were talking about:

I'm confident we will get many more non-port games. This is just what we have information on so far. As we said, January 12th is the day to learn about new games for Switch. I am confident Mario is not the only non-port game to be shown. Nintendo specifically said they were holding back the switch launch specifically so they can have a steady stream of releases after launch, and I don't believe that will mean enhanced ports only.

BTW, I wasn't sure if by new bits you meant not a whole lot new, but from the sound of things Mario Kart and Splatoon will have a lot of new content. Here's the article about the non-MK rumors, it goes into more detail about what to expect from the Splatoon enhanced port:

Really curious how local multiplayer will work on Switch.

If this is essentially a port of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U which has 4 player split screen, will a single Switch be able to do the same when hooked up to a big TV? If so will that function be disabled if you are in kickstand mode or will Nintendo let users try to make due with ridiculously tiny split screen if they so choose?

The reveal trailer suggests you can do 4 player local multiplayer in kickstand mode with 2 systems during the basketball segment. Can you do the same with two docked systems hooked up to TVs, essentially setting up a wireless LAN?

I love Nintendo multiplayer, not so much Nintendo online. I never ended up getting Splatoon because you could only do 2 player local, and because I knew Nintendo would discontinue online features like Splatfest after a short while.

My ideal setup would be the ability to use multiple Switch units to set up a LAN with download play requiring only one copy of a game, all completely independent of any online infrastructure. I mean, if they're going to include those features for portable mode, there's no point in disabling them when it's docked. Or even having a combination of one Switch hooked up to a TV and 2 more in portable mode.

I am amused how many people are making their purchasing decisions right now.

Can you guys do me a favor and update in January and then March? I am curious how much weight this decision has.

If it's ant reassurance, Wii U's launch was a 2D Mario game when we'd just gotten one three months prior, and a polarizing minigame collection (that I personally love, but I can admit it's polarizing). 3D Mario and enhanced Splatoon alone probably will generate a lot more excitement than that, and who knows what Nintendo and others have up their sleeve as well at and near launch.

You forgot Sing Party. Nintendo's smash hit for the casual audience.

Ports or no (and everything's pointing towards these being more than just ports), a 3D Mario, a Mario Kart, and a multiplayer shooter all at launch promise a lot more buzz than Wii U, which didn't get these until a year, 2 years, and 3 years later respectively. All Wii U had was NSMB, which just had an entry on 3DS a couple months earlier.

Zelda would've been the mic drop, but oh well.

As long as GAFKart doesn't force 200cc that the game is obviously not designed around I'll buy this

Oh, you know it's coming...

Mirrored 200cc when?

This is literally one of the things I want the most. Love mirror mode but I simply can't go back to 150 speed lol

Oh, and also the possibility of playing all the tracks non stop in offline versus mode
Why they never patched that to include (40 or 48 tracks) as options is beyond me.

I don't know if I can handle an All cup tour in 8 without breaks. Double dash was one thing lol.

Let's hope the battle mode this time is like the one in the DS version. That it has bob-omb battle and shine thief as well.

I don't think it'd do it more than a couple times but having it as a option sure wouldn't be a bad thing.
Especially if you take the console somewhere without reliable (or any) internet access.

This still doesn't really address my major issue with the Switch's opening line-up and launch window games, which seem to largely consist of 'updated' games from the Wii U library. The message from its fans have been "new games", and "more new games", not "more games" that are effectively games that their hardcore fans already own.

I'm not sure what Nintendo's angle on this strategy is, with the re-release of Splatoon (or supposed pack-in) and the use of Zelda as a cross-gem title. Obviously, there's a financial benefit here: it takes significantly less time and money to use what you already have and to bring it to the new system.

But if the argument here is that Nintendo wants to expand their audiences and is hoping that a return of former fans will flock to the system, I don't see how releasing games that your core audience - the ones that have effectively bought most of their systems to this point - is going to help with launch numbers. I don't think it's enough.

[/QUOTE] I sure as hell don't. D...ide the big 3 well known nintendo franchises.

I don't see how we can say it's largely wii u ports when we know nothing officially. I imagine most of the early brand new games are being kept as a surprise. Hell, we've heard rumors of a new ip near launch, so maybe it's just the a bunch of the really new stuff is untested ip stuff

I love Mario Kart 8, but this is what I was afraid of. A bunch of ports and old games with a little added content instead of full sequels or fresh IPs for the Switch. Even with new tracks this will play the same as a 2.5 year old game, we're not going to get Diddy Kong Racing hovercrafts or a new way to race.

Don't tell me you wouldn't have preferred a true Mario Kart 9.

A lot of early Switch buyers are going to be hardcore Nintendo fans who bought a Wii U.
Skyrim sold very well and it's not unlikely many Nintendo fans played in on one of the 5 other platforms it's on.

Ok, I had a thought. Would you prefer that Nintendo keep Mario Kart with only characters in the realm of the Mushroom Kingdom, or should Nintendo finally open the game up to more worlds like they did with the MK8 DLC?

Yes, it's time Kirby is introduced as a racer, that's my one wish.

Link's in, so why not Nintendo's 3rd most popular character (after Mario and Link) too?

Switch seemingly getting some of the best WiiU hits with extra content loaded. Just need Super Mario Maker and I'm pretty satisfied with updated WiiU titles coming over. It makes sense to me that this would be a strategy given the low install base of the WiiU, as I think many of these games are good enough to advertise as fresh experiences to a more general audience that I think the Switch will be aiming for.

Just holding hope for some sort of "share" feature built into the Switch OS (like direct-to-Twitch or direct-to-YouTube streaming), and another go at Virtual Console service with at least SNES and N64 titles included, and the Switch will have everything I want out of the next Nintendo platform that I personally want.

honestly Mario Kart 8 is my favorite Mario Kart game because of how it plays so if they deviated too far from that with a sequel then yeah I would prefer that they just keep the Mario Kart 8 formula and add a bunch of new tracks. go even further down the rabbit hole with tracks from other Nintendo IP. that's really all I need. they really did perfect the formula for me and the only things that need tweaking are slight balance issues.

I can't wait until January 12th so we can stop getting the faux analysis about how Nintendo is screwing up because they're launching the Switch with a bunch of ports and literally nothing else is coming to it ever again.

Wouldn't that be Pikachu?

Pokemon is Nintendo's third pillar alongside Mario and Zelda.

Does Pikachu have his own game though? He's just one of many Pokemon after all. Would your Average Joe even know what "Pikachu" is?

Kirby has tons of games where he's the main star going back nearly 20 years. Most of them are really well reviewed and sell well too. He's also had his own show, whereas Pikachu is, again, just part of Pokemon and Ash's sidekick in the cartoon (I don't know if Ash is still around honestly).

I'd say Kirby wins this one.

There is nothing that Nintendo can announce on January 12th that will completely silence the Nintendoom'd crowd

Pikachu is literally synonymous with pokemon and is the most popular pokemon by far.

We have Hey You Pikachu for the Nintendo 64
Hey_You,_Pikachu!_Coverart.png

Great Detective Pikachu ~Birth of a New Duo for Japan earlier this year. You could sort of technically count Pokemon Yellow.

There's a bunch of arcade based pikachu games and some self-contained ones as well.

Anyway, kirby has more games named after them(he is the main protagonist), but I think pikachu is more well known to the world, far more.

You kidding? Pikachu is easily in the top 5 most recognizable video game characters. Probably only Pac-Man and Mario ahead of him, maybe Sonic if I'm being generous.

Containing all the crossover elements to paid DLC is the easiest way to ensure people buy their DLC.

They can still derive plenty of base content from the Mario universe, that well's not dry.
