Mark Hamill Says ‘Star Wars’ Prequels ‘Impressed’ Him: ‘They Had Their Own Identity’

Original "Star Wars" editor Marcia Lucas has a different opinion and cried after "Phantom Menace."

“I was impressed the prequels had their own identity,” Hamill said. “They were criticized because they were exposition-heavy and more cerebral and probably, like he said back in 1976, they weren’t as commercial. It’s a darker story. But in the age of social media, people’s voices are amplified, and I’m shocked at how brutal they can be, not just in the case of ‘Star Wars’ films, but across the board.”

Revenge of the Sith remains one of the best Star Wars movies. Period.

The thing with the Prequels is that George wanted to sell new toys. So there were NEW planets, NEW starships, NEW aliens.

JJ Abrams wanted to sell a nostalgia trip so we got X-Wings and TIE Fighters again.

There were designs done for George's Episode VII and the ships looked NEW and not just a repeat of the OT like what JJ Abrams did.

Even Trevarrow was going to introduce new ships in his Duel of the Fates. The Frontier TIE Fighter that's at Star Wars Galaxy's Edge was designed for his third movie.

Because JJ is not creative himself, he either needs others to be creative for him or uses the work of better creators to attach himself to it. Star Trek, Star Wars, everything he did was pretty much leeching himself to other people's work. And as soon as people notice it, he adds just enough activism to shield himself from any criticism.

I agree. Casting a young kid, and specifically Jake Lloyd was the biggest mistake George Lucas ever made.

Phantom Menace had like 90% of the pieces in place to be a fantastic movie. Totally new art direction showing a polished and new republic in contrast to the decayed equipment of the rebels. Solid casting with Ewan McGregor, Liam Nissan, Natalie Portman. Right off the bat in scene 1 you're seeing Jedi with far more training and interesting abilities than Luke, with the force run and holding their breath, etc. Could have set up the rest of the movie for showing more advanced abilities from the actual living Jedi Masters and the council, more advanced training than Luke got, etc. Darth Maul is great as well. A couple of the fights are pretty good actually.

But they had a poor script, poor acting direction (it takes a skilled director to make Natalie Portman act this badly). And then the 2nd movie is one of the worst movies of all time. And then the third does a few things right in a similar manner to Phantom Menace, but couldn't salvage the whole thing. Poor decisions with the lore building regarding midichlorians instead of emphasizing deeper mysteries that the Jedi Council is still researching to entice fans and expand the story.

Far better than the sequel trilogy, but still deeply flawed with lots of missed potential.

Movies were Star Wars done right but lacked good dialog and character direction. Phantom Menace was better than people give it credit for. The the best scene in the series is the Darth Maul battle. Clone Wars was the worse by a large margin. I agee Revenge is the better overall movie

But for great Star Wars moments I'd rather watch the Pod Race, Duel of Fates etc then have to suffer watching any sequel film in its entirety.

When I look at the prequels, the most I get out of them is the sense of lost potential. I liked TPM a lot, but AotC and its direction onward, including RotS and TCW, was just not my cup of tea.

I definitely prefer the sequels, it's not even a contest. I share the sentiment that the prequels have their own identity - to me, they are that weird, "other" kind of Star Wars that falls somewhere inbetween being epic and being laughable. It's a really strange mix.

The prequels are good. Period. They are a bit corny, Epsiode 2 is kinda cringe, but they are prime meme quality and the political backstory, which was boring as fuck when i was younger, is good. People mostly dislike it because the OT didn't have it, but the politics flesh out the universe. Like the EU did. And Clone Wars are an integral part of the PT and together they show the transition: democracy -> autocracy -> military police state -> empire.

The movies fall short in some areas, but the story the tell is fantastic.

I like the prequels. I am not that much of a star wars fan. I think watching in 4K adds a lot to the prequels and the original trilogy is overrated which makes prequels look bad. Almost like people watched original movies in their childhood and then watched the prequels in their sinister teenage and were overly judgemental about it heralding the original trilogy as sacred.

Most of Episode two is good (and my God, Padme...), but bitchy Anakin makes it hard to watch...
Great introduction to Tyrannus, clone troopers as a long planned Jedi trap (greatly expanded in the later seasons of Clone Wars), erosion of the Republic.
Sequels can choke on a bag of dicks when it comes to a multi level deep intrigues, they are just a flashy re-telling if the OT with shitty pandering and destruction of a 40 year old cherished lore.

Yeah the Kenobi - Anakin dynamics were crap in AotC, but they did make them a lot better in RotS.
I know that Anakin HAD to be a cocky and whiny brat in that movie because he was held back and thought too much about himself. But it's hard to watch

They knew what they were doing because the prequels had to end in one way, so at least there is some structure and logic to these movies. I don't know what the fuck they were doing with the sequels. The prequels also has cooler tech and ship porn.

Prequel trilogy is quite bad, Phantom Menace is still the worst in the serie, they tried to condense 1000years of the Republic in half of the movie because the other half is CGI action which interrupt the narrative constantly, so the story moves too fast. Clone Wars is a bit better, especially the second part, Revenge is the only good overall despite every Portman's line is completely trash.

I loved the transition thanks to the expanded lore in Clone Wars, but to me the transition wasn't as important as Vader was just a pawn, nothing more. Sidious is the real deal.

It's really good, but one could be sure of the quality with Favreau being the producer. He's the ultimate Star Wars fanboy blessed by Lucas himself.
The Mandalorian recaptures the feeling of the Expanded Universe, so different from the Disney movies. It blends perfectly with the world building of the books and pre-Disney buy out games.

Revenge of the Sith was great: Mace Windu/Sidius showdown, Sidius alluding to his past, padawan slaughter, and Jedi extinction. Dark and delicious in every way.

the new trilogy had several issues deep into it's fundamentals that got worse in each movie. it like they were trying to $@# it up.

I always liked the prequels. I can see the hate for them but for me they are good. And I love Jar Jar Binks. I like goofy character.

Now the new trilogy (mainly the Ep 8 and 9)... It basically destroyed my love for Star wars. I am not interested in any incoming movies/series since I saw them.

Phantom Menace is rubbish, and Attack of the Clones isn't much better, but Revenge of the Sith is a legitimately good movie. With that said, each of the prequel movie presents a lot of new and interesting things that I go do actually enjoy going back to. The visuals, the action scenes, the characters - there's some really great stuff in there, and I'll put up with the lows to enjoy those highs.

I haven't seen Rise of Skywalker because, frankly, I just don't give a fuck about anything or anyone in those movies. The Last Jedi's lows were lower than the worst of the prequels to me, and because both it and Force Awakens were little more than re-treads, they have nothing for me to go back to. Not a single character, action sequence, or visual element worth enduring those movies for again. George may have screwed up the prequels more than a little bit, but you can't fault the man for his imagination and effort - he wanted audiences to see and experience new and exciting things with each movie, and it shows. The new films lack any form of ambition, artistic drive, or passion - and that shows, too.
