The original Marvel vs Capcom sprites will always make newer MvC games look disappointing

May Capcom hear you.

I've seen a lot of people complain about the 2v2 system. Why is that? I thought the original MvC and TvC were fine. Do you find it less fun/involving, or is it bad balance-wise to you guys?
I believe someone compared making a team in the 3v3 system to playing with Legos.

I'm more than fine with 2v2, but I can completely understand why it's disappointing to some. Between all of the possible team setups (and the synergy that can be composed within them), assists and just the sheer size of the roster(s), MvC2 and 3 are pretty much fighting game sandboxes (Maybe 3 moreso than 2). There's a ton of potential variety to be found in a 3v3 setup.

That said, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom proved (to me, anyway) that the series can still be fun in a 2v2 format, and mixing in MSH Infinity Gem craziness should make for a good time. I'm not bothered, but I understand why some are.

it removes a large element of depth 3v3 has, specifically in having 2 assists + assist calling matter (because you can hit and punish assists), team orders (because DHCs and which chars come in on death, etc), managing health between your team members and dealing w how the two previous aspects affect that. character balance is also built around how effective their assists are vs. their point effectiveness and you get cool specialists with lots of variety in teams/character designs due to it- it enables a large amount of creativity and sandbox approach to your character picks and strategies

2v2 with one assist has already had its logical endpoint shown with marvel vs capcom 1's "pick your helper" system where you always chose colossus or psylocke and calling them had no actual drawback with little depth to the management of when and why you'd be calling your assist due to punishing the assists having no meaning to the game state (in regards to who is winning or losing)

there's also elements of pacing and toolset strength design that are lost with 2v2 because 2v2 + 1 assist suggests scaling back the most interesting parts of the basic tools of versus series in their movement options (since you won't have 2 assists to cover your weaknesses anymore) as to accommodate character designs/"streamline" character designs

(aka make them less unique, less interesting or less powerful)

I made a giant post about it in the other thread but 3v3 system is really insane and allows for some really mind blowing stuff. 2v2 on the other hand is far more tame in comparison and we have been there done that with the Marvel games. The step up from Marvel 1 with Marvel 2 was insane. And to be honest, neither Marvel 2 nor 3 have tapped into the potential of a 3v3 fighter... so much untapped potential. It's a big part of why Marvel 2 and 3 were hype and games like Marvel 1 and Marvel vs SF were kinda forgotten in the past.

2v2 games just aren't that popular either. It's not as crazy as 3v3 but it's not really as beginner friendly as 1v1. It's this weird medium that just never seems to gain traction in the FGC. Maybe this game will change things up. I hope it does.

And these games have all been badly balanced. UMVC3 actually has the best balance as surprising as it is to hear. Marvel 1 with 2v2 and only a roster of 15ish characters still manage to have very defined top tiers and broken tactics.

Just give me Assists man. Maximillian PLEASE CONFIRM ASSISTS FOR US!!!!

To be fair though, the other recent 2v2 games (TvC, SFxTK) had their own slew of issues that prevented them from getting as big as other team-based games.

Now, that Marvel is more popular than ever and the FGC has competitively expanded far beyond what it was when Vs. games were 2v2, I think it's difficult to argue that 2v2 games just aren't inherently as popular as 3v3 games. TTT2 seemed fine as well, and got around a similar competitive lifespan as other Tekkens, no?

TTT2 didn't make any waves and a lot of people had issues with the huge roster plus 2v2 game play. And by people I mean the casuals and there seems to be more excitement around Tekken 7.

And this game can easily have its own slew of issues. So did Marvel 2 and Marvel 3. But people stuck with them because a lot of people found them to be fun.

I hope it does become popular though and it keeps people invested in the franchise. And maybe down the line we get MvC Infinity 2 with 3v3 game play for maximum hype.

Same.

The original release of MSH on the Saturn was some of the most hyped I've ever been for a game, and also let down when the game had slowdown issues. The ones following it were amazing with the 4MB cart.

I really don't like what the games became after marvel vs streetfighter. The series peaked for me with that one.

CAPTAIN MARVEL!!!

AN ATTRACTIVE AND NOT HATEFUL ART STYLE!!!

This feels too good to be true; which means the Gem system will probably ruin it!!!

My main Marvel requests are...
  • Star-Lord
  • Nova (Richard Rider)
  • Captain Marvel Confirmed
  • Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan)
  • Black Panther
  • Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)
  • Scarlet Witch*
  • Quicksilver*
  • Daredevil
  • Medusa
* = Capcom is gonna have to beg Marvel for this character, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

i could see him having a lot of trap setups with his ghosting tricks, a la grace of hoggoth

also teleports for days
Add Lynne instead, then all her attacks are Ghost Tricks with objects happening around her. i.e Sissel trying to save her. Bonus if getting KO'd is just her saying "Haha! I died again!"
