I only want two things.

Then how would you define all these JRPGs that have no "actual role playing" going on? I mean, they're mostly just cutscenes with 0 interactions during them with mostly combat, exploring, and shopping in between. Anyway, the few I played anyway.

I know this is the industry standard of what an RPG is but for me personally, it doesn't work. Games like Mass Effect are the ultimate RPG (again, for me). Having the ability to customize your character's stats and weapons is great, but when you add in all of the choices that made throughout the series..... Shit, nothing comes close. You ARE your character. His/her choices are yours, both in conversation and in action.

The next Mass Effect game can have whatever setting/character/structure Bioware wants; I'm there day 1. The Mass Effect trilogy will go down as my all time favorite games. I dont know what else will ever come close.

I occasionally play them and like them but i have never considered them an roleplaying game - and i don't know how to define them either for that matter, adventure games maybe? I have a fairly rigid view of what is an roleplaying game which probably stems from my background in tabletop roleplaying. I can't actually define mechanically what constitutes an roleplaying game. Roleplaying games is like pornography, you know it when you see it!

ME1 is still my favorite in the series that being said I played ME2 more. I've tried and failed several times to go back and play ME1 again but the combat mechanics are so dated compared to the later games that I never stick with it. I guess I like that ME1 felt to me like the complete total package, it didn't even need another story to prop it up, it made since entirely on its own and I felt so badass when I finished it the first time.

I'd love for them to announce some kind of HD remake with VASTLY improved textures mostly and framerate. However, and I might get a lot of crap for this, if they do a remake I'd rather them change up the combat system in ME1 to be more like the later titles.... at the very least fix the cover mechanics and add in some kind of biotic and tech combos even if they keep the older looking graphics.

With any luck though the new game will be more like ME1 in its RPG space opera-ness but have much better combat. Not sure if that's what we are likely to get though seeing as how the team that made the multiplayer part of ME3 is doing the entire ME4 game. I'll keep hoping and await news at E3 or later this year.

Lots of people feel that way about how an ME1 remake should be.

The UI of ME3 is what I should've said but the level up menu of ME1 is preferred.
Fuck no. That thing had tons of useless incremental updates and redundant skills. ME3 had the right amount of skill levels and the different combos offered by the branching options were a lot better than the straight percentage upgrades.

The wait for a reveal is a struggle, I had the first games soundtrack playing loudly in the car this morning. Uncharted Worlds is still fantastic.

Haha, I didn't know the "galaxy map theme" was called Uncharted Worlds until I went searching for it right now so I could link it here as my favorite song of the Trilogy OST. And I just found out it's also on Spotify, the hype is building!

Mass Effect is incredible. I've played it just once but transferring my char all the way through the Trilogy - even between different 360s in different countries. I spent hours reading or listening to codex entries, it's a very deep game with a great universe. Tho its ending is controversial, the
goodbye scenes right before it
are great in my opinion.

Today!

projectS?

so not just Mass Effect?

is there a new IP Bioware has been working that this could be referring to?

"New projects" and they even seperately, explicitly confirm DA, so it's not included.

It's happening.

Oh my god it's fucking happening.

I saw this but I looked at the press release on EA's site and the one on business wire and it didn't include BioWare, nor did it show up on basically any other site: http://news.ea.com/press-release/company-news/tune-ea-world-premiere-e3-2014-preview-june-9

EA said:

That said, the KotOR/Mass Effect leads have a new IP (probably too early) and BioWare Austin has multiple unannounced games.

Pfft, I'm not always right but people who disagree with me are wrong.

:p

To each their own I guess :p

Thanks, noted. Expectations in check.

At this point though, I expect a tease in the vein of the Mirror's Edge trailer we got last year. They're not going to let anything steal Dragon Age' thunder.

Mass Effect is by far the best of the series, but yeah it's level system was pretty shit.

It's one of the few things 3 did right. At first it's probably not evident but the branching style really adds to the replayability, one of the reasons the multiplayer is still popular to this day. You can play the same character like 3 different ways.

Bits and pieces. Supposed PAX leak, stuff I heard, stuff others heard, etc. General summary of rumours:

- Not a prequel.
- Emphasis on exploration.
- Vehicles.
- New major species.
- Multiplayer.
- "Mass Effect: Contact"

Hundreds of years in the future I bet...

I'm guessing that the major species is likely going to be the first alien contact from outside the galaxy. And I am guessing that they will likely be incredibly technologically advanced, and with the ability to reunite the otherwise fractured remnants of the previous space-faring galactic civilizations. The only question is what are their motives for doing so. I'm guessing that initially it will be appearing to be benevolent, but will likely end up being nefarious by the end of the new trilogy. The emphasis on exploration and vehicles could possible be being able to go back to and explore the previous colonies that were cut off with the loss of the mass relays. Some will likely be destroyed, collapsed due to the lack of outside support. Some will have survivors, perhaps hostile. Point of the game would end up being to try to begin the early re-establishment of some sort of galactic order at the behest of these new benevolent alien masters.

Could be interesting maybe.

Maybe the game should actually start thousands of years in the future, and some random previously undeveloped race finds Liara's space beacon she made about the Reapers. And then Bioware reveals the truth... That Shepherd failed, the Reapers won, and the game features a completely new cast of aliens (including no humans) fighting against the approaching Reaper threat.

Here's my guess for BioWare at this E3:

-Dragon Age and exclusive DLC/Co-marketing at Microsoft. "Tune into EA's press conference for more!"

-More Dragon Age at EA.

-Mass Effect Trilogy Next gen announced

-Mass Effect 4 tease

It's just gonna be the ME4 tease and not a big one at that. Their producer Mike Gamble already tweeted it's Dragon Age's show and that's how it should be, really.

That would be great.
Just doesn't need to be a trilogy.
Which perhaps we can also dismiss.

Drell are very powerful and Krogans are strong.
But if I have to pick one Vanguard.

N7 Slayer. Earth First. Aliens off our planet.
I'm all for N7 Slayer if Bioware can ditch the retarded skilltree design where survivability and melee damage are mutually exclusive.

Yeah ME2 really wasn't much of an RPG.

I personally am one of the ones hoping for more of a throwback to ME1's gameplay. My guess is we'll see a blend, though (of ME1 style and ME2 style), but it'll be quite some time before we find out.

I like ME2 as much as the other guy, but ME2 was the least RPG of the 3 games.

ME2 wasn't an RPG.
I guess that explains why it was so good. ;)

Wasn't a fan of Mass Effect 1's gameplay personally. I also never understood the like for the moon buggy exploration. I guess it's nice to have a change of pace in the game to do different things but I don't like games which have a focus on exploration. You tend to waste a lot of time doing absolutely nothing.

They improved the gunplay in ME2. ME3's mechanics were also pretty tight (perhaps the best of the series), although as an experience, I found ME2 to be the most enjoyable game.

I didn't find ME3 to be much of an RPG. It felt like a race against time where you HAD to fight the reapers like a pure shooter.

I haven't played many RPG games though (I've only played the likes of Deus Ex, DE:HR, Dark Souls, Demon Souls, The Witcher 2), so I guess I wouldn't know what 'defining features' of RPGs are. Out of these games I have mentioned, I enjoy Deus Ex and the Souls games the most, whereas The Witcher 2 is an utter borefest. Coincidentally, The Witcher 2 is one of the most praised 'RPGs' on this board. If that is the epitome of a good RPG game then count me out. It's a good non-physiological alternative to melatonin, more like.

ME2 wasn't an RPG.

To be fair, none of the ME series were RPG's. They were third person shooters with light RPG overtones.

Lots of people have been trying to convince themselves that the first one was (I often sift through the Eurogamer comment thread and the reviewer steps in to state this on several occasions - faced with a populous who insist that it is Bioware, it will be an RPG and there will be 100 hours worth of RPG content) and the rest of the series was dumbed down, but it just isn't the case.

The only thing that happened was a ridiculous loot mechanic was replaced, some of the most monotonous side missions were refined with more variety and an incredibly loose combat engine with Bethesda quality enemy AI was refined into something tight and purposeful. Everything else Mass Effect remained. A fantastic sprawling third person shooter.

Mass Effect 3 is very much an RPG. People tend to forget about it because of how fun it is.

I want humans.

This is a deal breaker for me.

No no no, no more Reapers threat please.
