Max: The Curse of Brotherhood |OT| No purple markers

i'm interested in this, but as others have mentioned - i need a trial/demo before i bite the bullet. not traditionally a fan of the puzzle platformer genre (why are there soooo many of these these days rather then just straight up platformers?)
This one you can bite the bullet on the puzzles are common sense with a few difficult ones. Game helps you too.

I'll disagree with the other poster and say if you're not interested in puzzles you should pass on this game. There are a few pure platformer sequences but they don't make up most the game.

I grew up on Point and Click adventures so the puzzles really scratch the itch for me

Man this game is so amazing. I call this genre the "chill game". It falls right into this category of Fez, Brothers, Journey etc. More of an experience without any challenge. I like this type of game every once in a while.

After beating Champion's Road, making a run through New Londo Ruins for an ember, and finishing the later stages of Peggle 2 these past couple weeks I could really use a chill game. Buyin' this.

Bought it last night and just played for about an hour.

Not bad, pretty simplistic so far though but it looks gorgeous and runs pretty smoothly too, apart from the cut-scenes where there's a noticeable stutter...

This is actually pretty enjoyable so far. Just finished the dark cave chapter and it was fantastic. Amazing use of light...

There's also been a nice bump in difficulty too, but the marker mechanic still feels a tad undercooked...

Just beat this last night. It took about seven hours for my first time through which is pretty good for 15 bucks. I really enjoyed the final levels with the
escort
mechanics mixed with all the abilities. The final boss wasn't bad for me. Great game and I can't wait to see what comes next from the studio now.

But the puzzle is the platformer. I don't play these type of games myself but watching some vids thhougt it was cool. Glad i bought it.

I'm glad you ended up getting this - you kept saying you had too big of a backlog. My philosophy is that you don't have to think twice about buying a new game as long as you play it right away. I had a big backlog and The Bridge came out - played it immediately, and my backlog was unaffected. I did the same with Brothers, GTAV, and The Lag Among Us.

I'm definitely snapping this Max game up as soon as I get my XB1.

That's exactly how I rationalised my purchase of it. Been playing it on and off all day and it's a fantastic little title. I doubt I'll be able to finish it today though, which means it only adds to my backlog...

All's not lost though, nearly two weeks off from Tuesday, so I have plenty of time to get lots of gaming in between going out with friends, etc....

Played chapter 1. So far:

Pros
- Wastes no time with tutorial. There's no "hey, swing from the rope using the analog stick!". The game just expects you to have played videogames before at some point in your life, and that's awesome. Even with the markers, you learn via the level design that gets gradually more complex. It shows you the buttons for the marker like one time, and off you go from there. Cutscenes are brief and short too.

- Art design. The desert aesthetic in this world works great and the monsters are more formidable than what I was expecting. The barnacle is straight outta Half-Life.

- Controls are good. This isn't Nintendo precision platforming by any means, but it's waaaaaay less floaty than something like Little Big Planet.

Cons
- Main character looks like a dork.

Thanks for the recommendation gaf, I think I'm gonna try and 100% this unlike Peggle 2.

Just got to 3-2. Collecting all Eyes and Amulet pieces as I play. Enjoying this immensely. Just noticed that on the stage selection you get a ribbon displayed over the stage's picture when you finish that level with no deaths. Getting all the no-death ribbons on every stage should be a fun little extra challenge to complete the game 100%, beyond that standard 1000/1000. Pretty cool!

The actor voice for Max is surprisingly engaging. It adds a lot to the atmosphere and even game play on occasion.

Just completed this game, loved every part. Well except for the last level. I agree with Spades that this level just isn't fun.
I had it countless times that I spawned death after a cut scene/event(either his hand was directly above me or I just literally spawned death), or that my marker was snapped to the wrong draw point causing me to die.

Been playing this for the past few days, and absolutely love it. It's the sort of game that brings a smile to your face, and makes you scratch your head with the cool puzzles every now and then ("You are stupid, how could you not think of that!?") Definitely recommend it for those into platform/puzzle games.

Same here. Great game. Reminds me of a lot of the time I had with Limbo.

Picked the game up on Friday but finally had a chance to play about an hour of the game last night. It's a great game so far. Really enjoying the puzzles in the game and making the platforming part of the puzzles at times is a nice touch. My death count is higher than usual but only because I'm trying to find eyeballs and amulets by dropping into pits and stuff like that.

Just picked this up today as a kid friendly game to play with my nephew. This is a lot of fun, I get the limbo comparisons but I like that this is not just a minimalist game.

I was expecting a cute little platformer to waste my time on, but what I got was 2 tons of game. The game design in chapters 5 and especially 6 is an achievement. All of your abilities come into play and solving those rooms felt truly gratifying. I will never look at tree branches the same way again. The tidbit in the review about the controls somehow being an impediment never affected me at all (I actually thought the controls were pretty tight), although there is indeed some trial and error especially as the slow motion parts become more demanding. Didn't care too much for the final boss either. You really can't go wrong with this one for $15. It's cute and has plenty to offer.

But on a final note, fuck this guy

I really feel like I played a completely different game from these reviewers. While the game is not perfect, I have no issues with the controls. It's not like you need to draw precise shapes or anything. Oh well

IGN finds the controls frustrating but wonders why they did not use kinect or smartglass for drawing

edit:
It’s not so much that their solutions are hard to figure out, but rather that I couldn’t draw where I wanted to and I could only use a small amount of ink

so in other words, they could not figure out the proper solutions. if your plan involves more than the limited resources they give you, then it is not the solution. That's the whole point of a puzzle.

You're not alone, I get the exact same feeling. With Ryse I could understand the reviewers but here it feels like we've played different games. I know that I've complained about the controls in the last level. But after replaying it I came to realize that it was my own stupidity that caused me to die so many times not the controls or the game.

And at first I also wondered why there was no Kinect/Smartglass intergration but the later levels, and some of the early speed levels, make it practically impossible to use them. So they would have needed to dumb the game down to make it Kinect/Smartglass compatible. After playing the game I'm glad that they didn't choose to integrate it, and went with the traditional controller input.

It may have had better reviews on PS4 because of no Kinect.
But I can see why there is no Kinect functionality after playing the layer levels.

Gaming-Age review: B
But that negative finale doesn’t wipe out all of the brilliant moments had before. While the overall feel of Max: The Curse of Brotherhood might be a bit uneven, it’s well worth checking out for the moments that work. It’s also a really great looking game, and outside of some minor framerate issues during cutscenes, it shows off the system hardware quite well despite not being a full-blown, AAA 3D adventure.

OXM UK: 9/10
Perfectly priced, and long enough to leave you satisfied but with room for dessert, this is a fantastic family-friendly puzzler that deserves a place on every Xbox One.

The first positive, with high scores, reviews for this game?

IGN review is up.

It got a 6.0.

Don't really agree with that one. The last level was a bit of a different beast difficulty-wise but it wasn't game breaking. The puzzles were creative and fun, overall I thought the game was good. I had no real issues with the controls either. I found if I screwed up it was more my fault because I got antsy.

I'm surprised there wasn't a single sniff marker joke throughout the entirety of the game >_>

Obviously it's targeted towards a younger crowd but the deaths could be a little aggressive and Max says badass when you get the fireballs.

Just completely finished the game, 1000/1000. Took about 8 hours total. Max has a really easy list of achievements and only a couple are somewhat challenging but it still feels good to have it 100% completed.

Overall the game is pretty good. Once you have all the upgrades for your marker it's definitely a much better experience. Makes me wish they had introduced all of them a bit earlier in the game instead of spreading them out so much.

But yeah, Max is pretty fun. Only negative for me was some of the frustrations that stem from the free form drawing of the marker just because it feels like you have to be too perfect at some points but there isn't a whole lot of penalty for dying so I can't complain too much. Excited to see what Press Play does in the future.

Edit: Figured I'd add a screenshot of this. Love how SmartGlass has these little summary things.

And finished.

Took just over 5 hours with around 60 eyes and 7 medallion pieces found. Pretty enjoyable overall, some frustrating sections and unfortunately, the controls aren't as responsive as they need to be in some areas, but it's a very good first attempt and with some fine tuning, could become a good series for PP/MS.

Played a bit more last night, game is very good although i've never been particularly good at puzzle games. Really like it though

Bought this last night, excellent game.

My only gripe would be that some of the deaths are unnecessary, as in it feels like it wants you to die at certain points to underline the solution.

I realise it does not punish you for dying but it can get a bit frustrating when you walk into an area and die immediately.

This is even more apparent during the final boss battle. You can die literally as soon as the game reloads from your previous death. I mean as soon as the screen goes from load screen to in game...

It's both annoying and pretty damn funny at the same time...

This game is fucking awesome and well worth the $15. Bargain seekers can wait till it goes on sale for $7.50-10, but it's worth the extra cash. Between this and Rayman Legends I've had loads of fun playing platformers lately. Granted it might be because it'd been ages since I played a 2D platformer, but I'm loving both games.

I really feel like that least 50 of those deaths were due to game not being as responsive as it needed to be. Another 10 are due the final boss battle issue where Max would die as soon as the game reloaded from a previous death.

Still, good game.

I don't think any version would have been made if MS didn't buy them.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-12-19-how-max-made-his-way-to-xbox-one

I hope they got a lot of success financially from this title. Really put a smile on my face. Me and my mate was playing it round his for a while the other night and we both agreed it was an awesome game.

^^ The clean IQ on those screenshots is awesome. I gathered it had a good AA solution while playing but it really shows on them shots.

It's a pretty easy game. The control does get finnicky at times, but let's not blame 50 deaths to it. ;p

Hehe. I may have ever so slightly exaggerated the number, but there really were too many deaths due to the controls...

It's a good base, I hope they refine it for any sequel...
