Labour actually have 20 more votes there than last time. This has to be the apparently mental Lib Dem vote going right wing...? They were down 20%.

Yeah, seems so. Rightward swing, even from some of the Labour voters in a usually safe Labour seat.

Doesn't bode well, at all.

No. The problem runs deeper than that. Miliband's figures are better than Brown's, for example. If leadership was the relevant factor, you'd expect a recovery on the basis, if not a fantastic one. This goes further than that. This is an absolutely fundamental problem at the core of the Labour party and there's going to be a far more serious rebuilding period.

They're too far too the left. Not my opinion, but England is basically right wing.

Wonder if Tony Blair rearing his head the last few days in support of Miliband forced people off the ledge and into the arms of Ukip/conservative?

Guys, Blair knew what he was doing. Stop hating him, EMBRACE HIM!

Also, remember that this time last year Farage was crashing aeroplanes so, you know, all things considered, this is a vintage count night for him.

So we have learned 2 things...

Tonight Britain has turned centre right....

Secondly, never lets the unions choose your party leader

I agree. To improve on Labour's current position Ed only has to beat Brown's awful performance in 2010, which came the same week as he was caught calling a women who had expressed concerns about immigration a "bigot" and after his terrible excuse of a Cabinet had flailed around for 3 years. Cameron has to carry all the baggage from 5 years of government with him into this election too. Something big is going on here.

BBC reporter saying the issue might be Labour's campaign was too Left-wing, but I'm struggling to think how "left" you can consider it. Abolishing non-doms was the most "extreme" thing in it. Many of their policies you could say were from the Conservative party and you'd believe it.

BBC guy says the Blairites will probably come out soon to say the campaign was too far left. Night will just keep getting worse I guess.

As an American watching the proceedings from overseas, I'd like to congratualte Scotland on independence after the future referendum (or pending the Tories blocking a referendum, the Great Anglo-Scot War of 2016)

We all expect Scotland to be gone sooner rather than later right? With an OUT vote inevitable, I worry about NI.

Man, if this causes Labour to shift further right.....

I don't think they have a choice. It's that, or not win.

EDIT: I don't think the problem is that voters don't like leftwing policies, I think that the largest part of the media doesn't and people still trust mainstream media sources, contrary to what Cyclops and vcassano might think. Labour won't win until Labour can win the Sun over. That's the brutal truth of it.

Brian Donohoe: I'm losing, it's quite substantial. It's a landslide in Central Ayrshire.

It looks like Jim Murphy losing his seat might come to pass. A real Portillo moment for me!

Tom Gordon @HTScotPol
Further chat is that Jim Murphy has not just lost to the SNP in East Ren, but lost badly

James Cook ✔@BBCJamesCook
Everyone at the Emirates saying Labour have lost all seven Glasgow seats to the SNP. #ge2015

Sinn Fein retain West Tyrone easily. Tories poll 3 more votes (169) than anti-gay, anti-woman , anti-rocknroll Susan White

Yep, Labour are going to tack firmly rightwards after this.

Chuka Umunna as leader with a heavily Blue Labour front bench, at a guess.

I'm going for a weekend break in Edinburgh in 2 weeks.

Might turn it into a scouting mission for job prospects and the housing market.

C4 update. Mitchell does a 5 min monologue on the failures of the Green Party, at which point Paxman says they're joined by Natalie Bennett for an interview. This show has got its moments.

Some estimates circulating at the East Renfrewshire count suggest Jim Murphy has lost to SNP candidate Kirsten Oswald by about 5,000 votes.

After losing so many seats to a party that is campaigning on more left wing policies than them the people who say this must be huffing glue.

BBC discussing how David Cameron might be the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Surely that can't be the legacy he wants to leave. To be Romulus Augustulus.

It's scary to consider the possibility than in five years' time we might have an rUK outside the EU. o_O

This is the first time I've genuinely felt like this is a more likely possibility than not. The United Kingdom is dying.

Sad for the UK. Europe in general has drifted rightward after the financial crisis. Its quite sad. The xenophobia is most frighting. Especially since the US is drifting leftward in this regard. Its bizarro world.
