I mean

this is patently false and completely absurd

over the past 20 years, the dems have made major strides in improving social welfare in the USA; the tories have made equivalent strides in dismantling it in the UK

in what sense does this make the dems worse than the tories? one of those parties gives a shit about people on the street; the other does not

I didn't say the dems were worse than the tories I said that you'd have to deal with more than just dems.

I didn't compare the dems and tories. I compared the tories and the republicans.

Damn, Bath swung to Conservative. Lib Dem 8% behind in second place with 30% of the total votes. Thing is, if more people tactically voted, Lib Dem could have easily kept it here. Labour and The Green Party took 13% and 12% respectfully. Basically ate away from Lib Dem and gave the Conservatives the win :(

Everyone loved Clegg in the last election, I really thought he'd go and lose nearly every seat...damn looking like another run for the blues.

Can you Brits explain something to me...

So, I've followed this election via NPR and BBC World Service not really close but listening/reading every day, and for weeks they were calling the closest election in an era and the Conservatives losing seats to Labour and then some other mixups and interest... and all.

ANd then today I'm driving home (East Coast, US, 5 hours behind you all) and the story has changed... It's Conservatives unexpectedly picking up seats, and Labour apparently getting trounced. So, here it is 6 hours after then and I'm online looking at numbers... And almost every count has Labour ahead with some ~128 seats compared to ~104 for Conservatives. So... are these seats being counted for Labour like "sure fire" seats and the remaining 300 or so seats are mostly Conservative (or LibDem, Scottish National Party, etc), or what?

Just seems like Labour still has a steady ~20 seat lead, yet every news report seems to be falling all over themselves in despair.

God. The Shadow Chancellor AND the Shadow Foreign Secretary have gone?! Yeah, even if they made some remarkable comeback, it'd be pretty hard to argue a convincing mandate.

Danny Alexander is gone, it's just not been announced yet.

Same for Nigel. There's not much worth staying up for at this point, apart from I guess actually seeing Balls/Farage/Alexander outed as it happens and seeing how many Lib Dems are retained.

I have a bone to pick with you UK PoliGaf. Why do you still call your conservatives Tories? Its absurd. Its like if Americans still called the Republicans Whigs. I doesn't make sense. Excuse my ignorance if there is a good reason for it. Its just always bothered me.

All the Tory safe seats are yet to be announced. So it's a forgone conclusion.

Safe Labour seats finished counting first. There'll be a torrent of Conservative seats shortly.

Labour wins urban areas, Conservatives win rural areas, they both contest suburban areas. Urban areas are geographically concentrated and collect and report votes quickly. Rural areas are large and don't. So, Labour always tends to build up early leads in the calls. Safe to say, Labour are facing an absolutely shocking defeat.

Labour right now have more seats, but they're seats that they would already have bagged regardless. As the night goes on, they'll gain fewer and fewer seats, while the Tory ones will just keep rising while their safe seats come in.

Labour have been ruined in Scotland, and everywhere outside of London, Labour have been doing less well than they should have. Certain important marginal constituencies seem to be tilting towards the Tories, and when the count finishes up, it looks like we might even end up wit ha Tory majority.

Tory is just short for Conservative...

The story of the election is how seemingly ALL the polls had got it drastically wrong, or that everyone polled were not honest, if they have the obligation to do so.

More or less everyone here were predicting a hung Parliament with around 20-30 seats between the Labour and Conservative parties.

Then, once the Exit polls dropped, it was a genuine WTF moment.

Labour's safe seats are being called earlier than the Tories's safe seats. Meanwhile, Tories have been getting their marginals while Labour has been losing theirs.

The polls missed the Lib Dem collapse. And the fact those voters moved to the Tories.

They're the same party. Some nicknames stick around - for example, there's no such constitutionally enshrined position as Prime Minister. The official name is First Lord Chancellor of the Treasury, and "Prime Minister" was actually first intended as a sarcastic insult that stuck.

It used to be the Tory party, then they changed their name, bit it's the same party. The Whigs are what then became the Liberals (the main opposition to the Tories/Cons for about 100 years) who then ended up merging with the SDP (social democrat party) to become the Lib Dems. If they hadn't merged and were still just "the liberals", people might call them The Whigs too, who knows.
