Media Create Sales 1/21 - 1/27

Agreed. The only surprising 1st party "sign of change" recently would be GT5P or Mingol P2. :lol
I don't know that I'd agree with your first example. Yes, GT5P sold far less than GT4P, but that's not a very good comparison considering where in the console lifecycle those each came out. A better comparison might be GT Concept 2001, which came out early in the PS2's life and did only about 50% better than GT5P (depending on those ghost PSN sales). So 5P's performance isn't a surprising disaster. . .though I'm sure Sony isn't smiling about it either.

GT5P was also more expesnive than GT4P (wasn't it something like 1.5x as much? Almost as much as a full retail game).

Actually, I wasn't comparing it to GT4P (which would be TOTALLY unfair) but SCEI's own (realistic imo) expectations. :lol

Did we ever get a confirmation that their 250k number was first week or lifetime? Because they probably won't fall too short if it's the latter.

With the downloadable version included they should be already past 250k.

I'd expect Doubutsu no Mori and Monster Hunter 3 to be key filler also. FFCC if it ever shows up and maybe Kirby too.

There's lots of room for lower tier notables like Shiren 3, Symphonia KOR and Fatal Frame 4... but we'll have to see really how well they hold up in 2008. 2007 wasn't exactly great for 2nd/3rd tier Wii games...
Yes. I thought about including Monster Hunter 3 or not. But I just left it with first party software to keep things simple by not including potential 3rd party titles. I also thought about Animal Crossing Wii since that is a 2008 title also, but then again I don't know how much hardcore players would be interested in that title (though the gamecube version sold pretty darn good considering -- obviously not taking casual / non-gamers into account, that's beside the point).

Hehe, I didn't know what game Doubutsu no Mori was. At the end of the post I thought I would google it but it turned out I already covered it ;)

By the way, retailer Tsutaya reports via Mainichi.jp that Smash Bros sold around 700k units in four days...

Source : Gamekult

http://www.the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm

Here are the estimated first three day sales of new console games in Japan between Jan 31 - Feb 2, 2008:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - 940,000
Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) - 210,000
Devil May Cry 4 (X360) - 45,000
Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi (PS2) - 92,000
Tales of Destiny Director's Cut (PS2) - 130,000
Disgaea 3 / Limited Edition (PS3) - 70,000
Family Ski (Wii) - 10,000
Assassin's Creed (PS3) - 32,000
Sega Rally Revo (PS3) - 2,000
Sega Rally Revo (PSP) - 1,500

Your source seems more reliable/probable, though.

Uh, the first shipment for Smash Bros was just south of 600k. Unless there was a restock within the first few days which would be genuinely unusual, it didn't sell 940k.

940,000?

Holy fuck if that's right.
I don't even think they'd restocked enough in time for that to be right, but 700k in the first four days doesn't sound too unreasonable. Tomorrow we'll know for sure, though.

I'm sure the 940K number is complete bullshit, but sinobi did say Nintendo was restocking on Saturday..so the 700K figure sounds more than reasonable.

Im confident that we will see some posts arguing about the irrelevance of SSBB sales since its not thirdparty and how the success of DMC 4 is a bigger splash since its a thirdparty developed hardcore game (ignoring the fact that the dev behind SSBB is Sora and Game Arts.. both independant to nintendo)

IGN tells us more about this week's sales :

US, February 5, 2008 - Early sales data from Japanese game site Mantan Web has revealed an initial sales total of around 700,000 for Smash Bros. Brawl over in Japan. The figure covers the first four days of sales, from the Thursday launch through Sunday.

The Mantan Web columnist, Taketo Matsuo, an employee of Japan's Tsutaya media retailer, expects the game to top the million mark this week.

While not providing specific numbers, Matsuo also revealed a second place finish for the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4.

The rest of the top ten had Tales of Destiny Director's Cut (Limited Edition) in third, followed by Disgaea 3 (PS3), Winning Eleven 2008 (PSP), Assassin's Creed (SP3), Wii Fit (Wii), Haruhi Suzumiya no Dowaku (PS2), Devil May Cry 4 (Xbox 360), and Tales of Destiny Director's Cut (Standard Edition).

Full sales numbers should be released later this week.

So, still according to the same source (the Tsutaya guy), this week's ranking :

1 - SSBB (Wii)
2 - DMC 4 (PS3)
3 - Tales of Destiny Director's Cut_Limited Edition (PS2)
4 - Disgaea 3 (PS3)
5 - Winning Eleven 2008 (PSP)
6 - Assassin's Creed (PS3)
7 - Wii Fit (Wii)
8 - Haruhi Suzumiya no Dowaku (PS2)
9 - Devil May Cry 4 (Xbox 360)
10 - Tales of Destiny Director's Cut_Standard Edition(PS2)

[NOTE] This ranking only concern the Tsutaya chain of stores, as Stumpokapow pointed out later

If that is true, that would be a significant drop for Wii Fit it seems.

If I can tell this properly, it's numbers ascribed to a website with no history of being right and a retailer report from one retailer.

so this week you will be able to count 8 or 9 ps3 games in the top 50 and maybe 5 or 6 psp games. that's a confirmation that if you have good games, people will buy. japan is fine, they just need good games. this top 10 is refreshing, lots of plataforms, lots of good games. i hope they can stay afloat for a while

Stumpokapow -> I went to Mainichi.jp to check out the article in question, and it seems like you're right about this ranking concerning just the Tsutaya stores chain.
However, I wouldn't be able to speak about this source's credibility (or lack thereof)...

it was lifetime with downloads included (off my head, 150k for retail + 100k PSN)... Just like warhawk, its one of those games that most ppl will get over PSN rather than BD not to mention that game sharing works as well.

Good games have always been selling great in Japan. I'm not sure when this has ever not been the case unless of course the definition of good games includes being only on certain platforms.

Zack & Wiki, sadly, shows that some good games don't sell in Japan. By and large though, you're correct.

Of course and that's the case globally but the perception that Japan has abandoned quality gaming as an overall truth is annoying.

Assassin's Creed on PS3 and the second week of PSP's new Winning Eleven game selling better than Wii Fit make me really question the credibility of that list IGN posted. I mean, Wii Fit has been selling like 90,000 a week post-holidays, and with SSBB releasing, I can only see those numbers going up.

"Dude, allz I care about is HD. And Japan hates it. So I hates Japan."
Something like that?

Yup Wiifit shouldn't be lower than third or fourth place unless there was a shortage or most of the people who bought Wii last week decided to pick up SSBB.

i know, i know. but this is in light of what has being spread about gaming in japan, that they have changed their taste, that only non games would sell. i was just pointing out that when you have good games, they will sell

It may well have been lifetime, but I'm pretty darn sure it was just disc sales, with another 50k for downloads. If they'd exceeded their disc expectations--which they would've already if this were the numbers--I think we'd have heard it. As it is, they'll end up close to their projection if it was lifetime (or possibly exceed it, if the full GT5 gets delayed into 2009).

For the Top 10 posted, as Stormbringer said it appears to be for one store chain only, which is why WiiFit isn't in 3rd or 4th as it will be in the M-C numbers (depending on total Haruhi performance).

That indeed makes sense, and maybe it should be reiterated, as it has been said earlier, that these numbers apparently only concern a chain of store of ONE retailer, and not the usual panel of retailers...
Anyway, with all this confusion around these unusual numbers coming from an unproven source, I think it seems clear that in the end, we're all better off waiting for the usual sources to inform us at the right time...Guess you gotta blame the lack of patience for this kind of confusion...

70k Disgaea 3 in 3 days? Number 4 (or 5) on the charts in SSBB/DMC4 week?
Doubters are so owned :D

This warrants a repost: (note that while particularly extreme this was by no means a rare position mere weeks ago)
Terrell said:
I've said it to many slings and arrows already (was even willing to bet a ban on it at one point) that Disgaea 3 wouldn't make it to the Top 30 on launch week, and the only way it could occur is if for some miraculous reason, a large portion of the 100K install base Disgaea 2 managed at the end of the 20-million-strong PS2 lifespan somehow jumped on a PS3 for this game when they're likely still quite content with their PS2s and its continued niche-market content.

If these numbers are confirmed in next week's thread I might actually search around a bit for other such choice quotes. I don't think I've ever had this much fun in a sales thread.

People don't have infinite money. Perhaps some opted to by SSBB instead of Wii Fit this week. Or perhaps there are shortages. We'll find out shortly how accurate these reports are.

It will be weird if that top 10 list is more or less correct (maybe not the actual rakings, but which titles made the list). When was the last time the DS was totally shut out of the Top 10?

No it wasn't... SCEI expectations were 250k boxed plus 50k digital. No mention if it was lifetime or not, but I'd be surprised if it were given the tiny DD figure.
