Was this the first week of the Japanese PS2 price drop?

Does that have as much effect in Japan as it normally does in the US? (although, retailers can be slow to act and could easily take a good couple of weeks to get out to consumers)
The price drop is supposed to take effect on Sept 15 - so that would be next week's chart. However, it is a fairly small price drop. The PS2 is open price right now, but can be found for about 17,800 yen. The official price drop will be priced at 16,000 yen, so it is only about a 10% price drop. I wouldn't expect much of a sustained long-term boost to sales, but it will be interesting to keep an eye out for it, because the PS2 has been hovering around 20k per week for much of 2006.

More like dead in the water. Looks like people are waiting for the touchscreen PSP2 to me.

Well, Sony should provide screen protector from the go if they release touchscreen PSP2 (since they don't have the second screen that will act as screen protector while the machine is off).

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
It's the usual quiet before the storm tradition for DS. Remember the week prior to Nintendogs? And this isn't even that bad, still outselling all systems combined.

Since the DS launched in the U.S. and Japan:

NDS: 16.73 million
GBA (in timespan): 10.84 million
PSP: 8.99 million

From here, it seems that NOE is saying that 6 million DSs are sold "in Europe alone." That makes 22.7 million in the three major territories alone. For reference, the last we heard for PSP in Europe a couple of months ago was 4.5 million.

On a similar note, what ever happened to Big Brain Academy? It was surging along with Brain Training (and for a time BT2?), but then it just hit a roadblock and it fell off of the charts. What up wit dat?

Last report is 1.265.658 on Aug 6, but i'm waiting for next Famitsu DS issue to see how much it sold in august

I wish there were LTDs on Rune Factory and Valhalla Knights (not to mention Naruto RPG 3 and a few other games).

According to Famitsu:

Naruto RPG 3: 49.779 (since Aug 6)
Rune Factory: 58.388 (still in top30)
Valhalla Knights: 14.089 (but it's the first week release, remember Famitsu chart is about 2 weeks ago)

I can't find the figures in 2ch but unconfirmed first day sales from sinobi...

Minna no Tennis >100k first day...may crawl 500k ltd.
Kenshin 120-150k for the week?
Ridge Racers 2 just 30k at most for the week? Bomba?

Meh...I just posted this so if someone saw the figures they would share...

What what? I thought 30000 sold was the measure of success for a game in Japan. Or at least thats what that guy was banging on about the past couple of months.

not so bad i think... 30k first day means around 50k for first week, not a bad result, we are talking about PSP games and we all know only Monster Hunter titles can sell more than 500k on PSP ;)

Curse you Namco.

A) Stop remaking ToP (this marks the 4th time)
B) Stop randomly dissing Europe, can't we get another non-remade Tales game anytime soon?

Ehm...sorry? 30k at most for the week is what I understood in sinobi's post
If Phantasia opens with 66k and Ridge Racers 2 just 30k...thats not good at all.

For the record, Phantasia 4th-version PSP opened higher than Phantasia 3rd-version GBA. Phantasia recollection numbers:

 ▼ Tales of Phantasia 95.12.15 SFC 84,373 48,001 - 248,879 33.90 %
 ▼ Tales of Phantasia 98.12.23 PS 267,543 109,370 61,808 550,394 48.62 %
 ※ Tales of Phantasia(The Best!) 00.09.28 PS - - - 81,510
 ▼ Tales of Phantasia 03.08.01 GBA 55,970 21,327 13,304 134,608 41.58 %
▼ Tales of Phantasia Full Voice Edition 06.09.07 PSP 66.000

oh.. well... yes, you're right, 30k for the week is bomba... i thought you meant 30k on first day sales :)

30k means it sold same as RR6 on 360 did *_*

Aug 6? july top 100?

can you give me a link of the famitsu chart july?

Just thought I'd post that:

YTD PSP 2006: 1,285,484
YTD PSP 2005 (same amount of weeks): 1,215,219

YTD DS/DSL 2006: 5.242.456 (!!!)
YTD DS 2005: 1.626.116

PSP is now 70k ahead of its 2005 performance at the same point, but it will lose most of that in the next two weeks (last year we saw the release of the white PSP and WE9 PSP) with sales of nearly 121k in two weeks in 2005.
DS on the other hand is on track to sell sth. like 7.5m or more - basically every single unit Nintendo will ship :lol

not top100, it's Famitsu DS magazine, i was in Japan this summer and i bought both July and August issues and you can find top20 monthly chart.

Anyway, i checked again and Yawaraka was not in the chart, so the last data we have is from jan-jun 2006 chart. My mistake, sorry!

Original DS was going down, down down... 1159. 934. 712. 410. 320. 1058. Wha? How did that happen? Did they find some between the couch cushions?

Days late and dollars short, but the usual.

GBASP at 27 weeks: 1.50M
DSL at 27 weeks: 4.15M
Time for GBASP to reach 4.15M: 84 weeks

"GBA after SP" at 27 weeks: 404K
"DS after DSL" at 27 weeks: 479K
Time for "GBA after SP" to reach 479K: 36 weeks

PSP at 27 weeks: 1.42M
GBM at 27 weeks: 463K

Looks like the GBA after SP will overtake DS after DSL pretty soon. Understandably so, since the DSL is, as a product, closer to the original DS as a product in terms of price and features. This is unlike the original GBA, which could have further enticed people based on its horizontal layout, use of batteries and considerably lower price.

Standard batteries are enticing? :/

Lithium-ion all the way.

Yeah, but the fact that Nintendo's stopped mass producing them much earlier than with the GBA tells a lot too, right? :p

I'm pretty sure for people who don't play a lot and want to save the $35 or whatever by not getting the SP, it might be something they can just deal with. *shrugs*

powerless or are they? o_O
what the hell is Nintendo going to do for the remaining 3 months of the year? North America will probably gobble up 3 million units - same with Europe. Japan will most likely sell closer to 4 million units. :-/

= 10 million units

They can produce 2.2 million per month. 2.2 * 3.5 = 7.7 million

10 million
- 7.7 million
= 2.3 million shortage

NCL must be pretty frustrated at this point. They know they could sell twice as many a week as they can produce, but didn't want to invest in increased manufacturing capability because there is no precedent for this kind of demand to last much past the new year. Wow.

I'm betting Nintendo has been stockpiling in both Europe and North America. You can see that in the Japan weekly shipments of around 150,000. They produce around 550,000 a week, and I know America and Europe aren't selling 400,000 a week.

Last we got of Europe (weekly sales) was 140,000/week (from Nintendo), this was a few weeks ago though (or month or something).

Your formula is... not that good.

Last week you were off 30k on Tales of Phantasia. You were off 20k on NSMB and 20k off on FF3. You were 3k too high on Brain Age 2, 6k too low on Cooking Navi...
