I find it sad how we have this thread and we still have discussions about Metal Gear on main Gaming side. The whole MGS4 thread should be moved over here tbh.

Don't worry, plenty discussion to be had in a couple of weeks during TGS when we get more MGSV info.

Just posting this here because I want to see how the image looks on GAF. Please don't mind the shitty background, general quality, font etc. It's all temporary stuff, I'm just trying to find a decent basis.

Nice!! I like the style - I have links to the fonts for MGS1-4, if you'd like? :)

I should have you guys proofread my REmaster OT while we're proofreading OT's anyway. XD

This is so Swerve that it can only be true if Kojima is involved.

Yes, LD, I could use those fonts! :)

Gotta say, I'm confident in the style I'm using. Just need to find a more fitting background (just picked a random grey background on google) and I need to improve the textbox with the information about the game. Currently looks like it was made in paint :p Also need to move it a few pixels to the left as it doesn't look that good sticking to the boxart on the right.

Eh, I just realised I shouldn't include a history of all the MGS games.

Instead, I think it's better to create a timeline at the top of the OT including only the events that happened before MGS V: TPP. So: only Metal Gear Solid 3, Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. Not sure if Portable Ops as well.

I think that would be cooler, more relevant and it would make the OT less bloated :p No point including the original Metal Gear games, MGS1, MGS2 and MGS4 since the events in those games happen after MGS V.

Portable Ops should get a mention since it's the closet we ever get to seeing the formation of The Patriots, something that'll be relevant in MGSV no doubt.

That's a good idea. PO, if included, should get just a brief summary. It's nearly important as 3, PW, or GZ.

I do not envy Dawg at all. He has to follow up on quite possibly one of the greatest OT's of all time. I believe in you tho! Show em who's boss.

It'll be the ultimate collaboration of MGS fans. He wont be alone. Also, I'll be making the MGO3 OT to go along side the TPP OT. Should be awesome.

LET THE LEGEND COME BACK TO LIFE!

Seriously though. That MGS4 OT is actually one of the reasons I signed up for NeoGaf in general. lol

Shoutout to BruceLRoy. No pressure Dawg the rules have changed since then. I don't think Mega OT's like that one are allowed anymore anyways

Can someone explain to me why it looks like this Soviet soldier during the Afghan invasion looks black? Were there even black soldiers in the Red Army at the time? Not trying to be insensitive or anything, but MGS is usually accurate with this sort of thing. That being said, maybe I'm wrong and there were?

I thought it was lighting at first, but in similar lighting, there's a clear difference:

Looks more like he has a tan.

Maybe you guys are right. It just seemed really weird that black dudes would be in the Red Army in the 80's during the Afghan invasion. Seemed historically inaccurate.

I thought he was black at first too but taking a closer look at the pictures, his face doesn't seem to have the right structure.

He actually looks Latino to me, which might be even stranger.

Also, god damn MGS3 is the greatest game ever made.

Gets pretty hot in Afghanistan.

I'm hoping they aren't going to pull an RE5 and add Latino's or other ethic groups in random areas that made absolutely no sense.

Seems like an non-issue to me. They could have an Inuit Militia for all I care.

What happened with RE5?

EDIT: Something about this post makes me a little uncomfortable...

Uncomfortable? Why? I'm not being racist or anything. I'm simply saying that it doesn't make sense to have random black, asian, latino, etc in the Soviet army in the 80's when I'm pretty sure there weren't any (correct me if I'm wrong).

RE5 added random whites and latinos to the masses of black enemies in the game. This wasn't the original plan because the game takes place in Africa for fucks sake - but the moronic media had to whine and complain that the game was racist because you play as a white male (established character, btw) killing blacks. It was all just a big mess.

What are you using this for?

Since I was (am) currently not doing anything at 3 am, I decided to try my hand at reconfiguring that layout.

What makes me uncomfortable is how the race of the enemy is even an issue.

Stripper snipers who can change the colour of their skin, handheld holographic devices, and red robot arms don't really make sense in 80s Afghanistan either, but we're able to suspend disbelief for those. Russian soldiers not being white is really... I dunno, trivial? Just tell yourself that some of them are mercenaries hired to bulk out their stationary forces or something.

RE: RE5 -

Depends where it's set in Africa.

Africa is absolutely huge and consists of a variety of counties outside of what many people think (Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Libya, Algeria etc.). Due to mass colonisation in the 18th/19th Century by a variety of European countries (France, England, Belgium, Spain, Portugal etc.), many of countries in Africa still have a colonial presence to this day, so it isn't really that huge a leap (again, depending where it's specifically set).

I can definitely get the media's concern though. If done completely devoid of irony (like Far Cry 3 "apparently" does) and without addressing it directly (like Max Payne 3 actually does), it could reek of old-school colonial racism/White Man's Burden.

Really though, I'm not sure how having a mixture of ethnicities to murder really impacts in any meaningful way, whereas I can see how some people might feel really uncomfortable with being a white guy shooting up an African village and by extension not wanting to play it (impacting on sales). When we're talking about the kind of fantastical AAA game that RE5/MGS represent and it comes down to choosing between immersion or making the majority of people out there feel comfortable playing it, I'd trump for the latter without batting an eyelid.

It is quite amusing that people were fighting for the right to murder a broader demographic though. XD

IP, i think you should thoroughly research the subject before assuming there were no black or latino soldiers stationed in Afghanistan for the USSR in the 80s. i'm not saying you're wrong. but just assuming they're weren't with very little basis upon which to assume it is little silly

Here’s some modern day Russian Soldiers:

By all accounts, ethnicity was not a barrier to joining the Soviet (Red) Army, it’s just that the Afro-Russian population is relatively small, not well documented, and life isn't a Cold War action movie ;P

In fact, Soviet Russia spent a lot of the Cold War trying to court and build strong relationships with both African countries and Afro-American communities in the hopes of kickstarting Communist revolutions. There’s a lot of detail here regarding Afro-Russian history, with a brief mention regarding one specific instance of training:

The Soviets had supported Ethiopia's long-time enemy Somalia, which had embraced socialism with the 1969 arrival in power of General Siad Barre, who had been trained in the Soviet army.

Afro-Russian involvement in the military even predates the rise of Communism. Here’s an Afro-Russian General from as early as 1770 AD, Ivan Gannibal. Here’s his dad, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, who was also a prominent military leader, albeit both were exceptional cases.

So it's not unprecedented to have Afro-Russian Soldiers.

what if all the 2014 rumors and confusion is actually an MGO3 beta? so we get the beta for preordering later this year with the release of the game coming in spring 2015

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
This sounds weird but i really hope the PC version comes after the console versions because if those come at the same time i really don't know which one to get. I'm mostly a PC guy these days but what if the port has problems, my pc is too weak etc. I really don't want anything like that happen.

So i hope the PS4 version comes first so i can play and finish the game multiple times and then play it all again on PC with upgraded graphics etc.

:lol Same here! Not worried about it running, but Japanese PC ports... Yeah... I would prefer that they have time to tweak and polish the game for the Steam release!

And yet when all the enemies are white, no one gives a shit. Weird how that works, isn't it? The point I'm making about RE5 is that it was set in an African region where 99% of the villagers were black. They changed it because of the whining media.

With other ethnicities in the Red Army during the 80's, it just seemed very off. You ask me why the sci-fi of MGS doesn't bother me, but I question the soldiers during this time? It's one thing to call out sci-fi shit in a sci-fi series, but it's another to call out historical accuracy when prior games in the series have done a pretty damn good job of keeping most, if not all of that, in line (exception being the lore interwoven with it).

I wasn't assuming there were absolutely none, but what I'm getting at is that there were so few, it'd be such a rarity to ever see them.
